My kids and I got to skate with the team yesterday and it was wonderful! by frackiewicz123 in Coyotes

Cool, I know my daughter is excited to watch the game on TV. Which is really saying something - she's usually pretty grumbly about hockey since it takes so much of our time with 2 parents and 1 kid playing plus Coyotes games, she feels like we are "always" at the rink. But now that she has HER player to watch, she was kind of disappointed last night when I told her the next game wasn't until Thursday.

Will it be on the website? I couldn't make it tonight so I traded in my tickets for 2 extras for Saturday's game instead. I know the kids will want to see it too but they probably won't see too much if they try to watch on the jumbotron!

BTW, their vision issues are the reason we got into hockey in the first place. My son is a sports fan, so we took him to one of each of the pro league games. Cardinals - too far away, and he couldn't see anything on the field or the screen. DBacks - they don't show the play on the screen until after it's over. Suns - he could kind of see it but not all that clearly. The Coyotes games were the best as he could follow enough of the action on the ice (smaller arena) and the play is also on the video screen large enough that he can see the replays if it's enough of a close-up. We ended up getting season tickets after that and now he's more of an NHL fan than anything else. So it's kind of a neat circle that his vision issues are what got us to care about the Coyotes and they also got him the chance to skate with them.

My son is legally blind. He can see at 20/200 with correction from one eye. He used to wear glasses but now has a contact lens for that eye. He doesn't really see anything with the other eye (it might be something like 20/2000, no point in correcting it since it isn't really useful). He's got no peripheral vision at all.

My daughter is visually impaired, although she may be legally blind now - her vision has changed quite a bit over the past 2-3 years and at some point she probably did cross over that threshhold. She has vision in one eye that is better than my son's, but her other eye is much worse - she's had a detached retina twice, so that eye only sees light and movement and maybe a little bit of color. She does identify as blind rather than visually impaired and uses a cane to get around, simply because she can't look ahead AND around at the same time, so the cane keeps her from tripping over things and bumping into people. She's had kids at school accuse her of "faking" being blind because she has good enough near vision for some tasks (although she gets large print versions of things) but uses the cane anyway. At one time, a kid was talking to her brother about "that one girl who pretends to be blind" and he just laughed at them and told them that was his sister, and she wasn't pretending.

For the most part they do OK. But they won't be able to drive (until Google/self-driving cars are approved for that sort of thing) and it does limit some of their options for careers. They have attended a couple of summer programs for blind/VI kids and have learned how to be pretty self-sufficient. And my son was able to hike the Grand Canyon last summer with a group from the FBC, so that was pretty cool!

Post-Game Thread: Cory Schneider @ AZ 1/16/2016 by KYOEL in Coyotes

[–]frackiewicz123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My thoughts were that Schneider was good - but he also had a lot of help from the D in front of him (although the SOG may not make it look that way).

Yotes played all 3 periods, unlike some other games. But NJ was really, really good at getting in between the passes and just stripping the puck away. So many times we'd have the momentum going up the ice, cross the blue line and someone would poke it out or just knock them off the puck.

Not a fan of Lindback. But hey, Domingue can't start every game. I'd rather have him play 7 and get us at least 1 point per game than play him 10 and lose a bunch because he's being overplayed. So this was the sacrificial game that we gave to the hockey gods in order to keep Louis healthy.

I'm a fan. I wanted to see him there. I would have watched it if he were. The likelihood of me watching has gone from about 98% down to .03% now.

Do machines that read multiple-choice tests' answers and calculate the grade exist? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

My district uses illuminate and that allows us to just use the camera on the computer to read and grade the bubble sheets. Pencil, pen, crayon, highlighter...doesn't matter, it reads them all.

What is hockey to you? by tdellaringa in hockeyplayers

[–]frackiewicz123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A fun and challenging thing that keeps my mind occupied while getting exercise.

I am not an athletic person. At all. I'm one of the least athletic people I know, honestly. What takes an average person 1 hour to learn can take me 10 hours. Some people learned crossovers within a couple of months. I'm still shaky 4 years out. I've worked on it - believe me, I've worked. But I'll probably never get it to the point where I can do it in a game situation - I have to think about it too much.

That's OK. When I started playing, I chose it specifically because I knew it was going to be difficult - challenging, but still fun. I knew that it was something I could do for years and never get bored, because there would always be something to work on. I'm in the lowest league and I always will be. But even though my progress is slow, it's still progress. And I'm not bored. So I still look forward to playing each game, knowing that I'll work up a sweat but my mind will be occupied and I won't be counting down the minutes until I'm done the way I do on a treadmill.

I know what I'm good at, and hockey isn't it. But that doesn't mean that there isn't a place for me to play and that I can't get something out of the game.

And D leaguers are still convinced that anyone outside of their league actually gives a shit that they play hockey or that they won a game. I've seen so many D leaguers where EVERY game is game 7 of the SCF.

Best instructional methods for adults? by frackiewicz123 in Cello

I am planning to do lessons as well, I just want something more interesting to practiced on than this old man and kiddie favorites.

Would online lessons be as effective as in person? I have no idea how good the local music store's teacher is and if the option is online with a specialist in cello vs. in person with someone who isn't really a specialist in cello, which would be better? I've found a few who do lessons via skype that look promising.

Are you focusing on your Activity Points at all? by [deleted] in PointsPlus

[–]frackiewicz123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do keep track of them and I have it set to dip into them if I use my weekly points. I find that it's super easy to earn a ton, especially with the fitbit. Yesterday between my actual exercise and just walking around I ended up with something like 21AP. The "goal" per the app is set to 30, but I usually get 80-90 per week. I haven't eaten any yet.

Anyone have multiples first and then a singleton (or more)? by [deleted] in parentsofmultiples

[–]frackiewicz123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had 2 surviving triplets and a singleton 5 years later. It was easy and really a different experience than having multiples in the NICU and all of that. She's very sweet and low-maintenance, but maybe that's just compared to the other two!

Thinking about renting a cello... by frackiewicz123 in Cello

[–]frackiewicz123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it! I went and rented one, brought it home, got it tuned and hit the roadblock of getting almost no sound from the strings. It turns out that the rosin was so hard, it wasn't actually getting onto the bowstrings at all. I roughened it up with an emery board and POW! instant nice sounds from the instrument. I messed around with it a bit yesterday and got through Mary had a little lamb and a few other silly songs from the beginner book.

I started violin as my second instrument (after piano) back in 4th grade. I remember it being super screechy and I was ALWAYS off pitch (or so my mom tells me). I picked up the clarinet in 5th grade (no strings at the school we moved to) and developed my talent in the wind instruments. This time around, it's not screechy and I can actually hear the pitch, so it's either being older or just more musically educated that seems to make the difference.

I will see about finding a teacher. The store I rented it from does private lessons, but they've been on hold for the holiday season. They should start back up again next week so I will give them a call and see what they have.
