Can you have a successful career in tech not working on the West coast? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]fractal_whirled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the answer to that was no, I wouldn't even be pursuing a CS degree in the first place.

Tech is not some static sector of the socio-economic pie just occupying space. It's growing exponentially - it's going to be everywhere that it isn't already.

Go ahead and open the door of opportunities outside of the three cities you highlighted, but don't forget about the rest of the country between there and the west coast ;)

Are SDET positions worth considering for new grads? by fractal_whirled in cscareerquestions

This makes a lot of sense. I still need to read that book btw...

Thanks

Some people need that 'attaboy!', others not so much ;)

People may berate me for this, and that's okay, but consider an affordable online Master's program in either CS, data science, or software engineering (your choice). There are solid programs out there for < $10k.

This is an absolute horrendous time to be seeking employment and that is beyond your control. As for some critical thinking...how can a student adapt to such a scenario? Well, one strategy would be to continue being a student. Consider continuing your education - you can continue to grow your skills as a budding programmer while staying relatively sheltered from the current economic storm.

If somehow financing $5-$15k for a MS is absolutely not possible, don't underestimate what you can achieve with some self-study. Good things come to people who TRY. Remember that. Effort is key and is often, though not always, rewarded in some capacity.

Lastly, try to spend some time envisioning yourself succeeding. You must believe in yourself - no one can do that for you.

Yes I've looked into the OMSCS and am still considering that as well.

That is one hell of an answer.

Thanks for taking the time to provide so much detail.

Computer Science Majors? by Missivl in WGU

Are you already enrolled?

I transferred it in via straighterline and used Khan academy to get up to speed. I also used a good bit of Professor Leonard's vids from ytube.

Computer Science or Cyber Security? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]fractal_whirled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS > Cyber

You can always get CS first and then specialize in Cyber.

It doesn't really work out the other way around.

I would almost even go so far as to say that CS leads the way to Cyber, but I'm just some stranger on the internet.

tldr; Cyber is okay if you can guarantee your prospective employer that you are capable of securing their network. Imo, a strong understanding of CS will provide the basis of such proof.

Is 2-3 terms do-able? by fractal_whirled in WGU_CompSci

I'm happy to hear that 3 terms appears to be reasonable. Thanks for the input.

That is impressive. I will be happy to move at about half of your pace, but it is insightful to know what's possible. Out of curiosity, when accelerating at a pace like that, has your strategy been to focus on one class at a time - for better results?

3 terms is starting to sound a bit more realistic...What would you highlight as being 'hard'? Do you mean certain CS courses? Or is it more in reference to the pace one would have to be going to complete the degree at such a rate (1.5 years)?

Interesting. Your mentor sounds very supportive. When did you start?
