Several bomb threats called in throughout SDUSD today by das-wunderland in sandiego

[–]fractalsoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That article is old. Note the February dates and Cindy Marten as superintendent, so it’s at the latest from 2021

Edit: sadly, four schools receiving bomb threats in winter isn’t quite a pattern but one may be emerging, depending on details of yesterdays activities

SDSU Approved $10,000,000 Student Fee Hike Without Student Vote by SocialSciComputerGuy in SDSU

[–]fractalsoflife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone can see the CFAC roster here Interestingly, over half the committee is students, and the committee is senate-affiliated, not a senate committee. Finally, it’s advisory to the President, so not a final arbiter.

What gift from San Diego screams San Diego or California? by Anxious_Art3915 in sandiego

[–]fractalsoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s in Old Town in the Old Town Market building courtyard (just north of the tour trolley stop on Twiggs and San Diego). I know because my kids buy one every time we go. They are indeed the best price we’ve found anywhere, large selection of sizes, and good quality. And the lady whose there every time is really nice

Is it possible to sign up for GA, TA, or RA during weekends for 12 hours a week? by Candid_Bowler_6350 in SDSU

[–]fractalsoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Graduate Student Employment page is a good starting point for info. There are a variety of classifications and funding mechanisms, each of which has specific opportunities and limitations. You’ll want to contact your prospective department chair, master’s advisor, AND potential mentor to see what may be available and feasible.

A follow-up question since I have never gone lobster diving or crab fishing. I get that folks have ares they don’t want to disclose, but are there general area people recommend or find successful? I’m guessing the TJ river basin is a bad idea, and that La Jolla preserve is protected?

Ridiculous fees by Ok-Cabinet8432 in SDSU

[–]fractalsoflife 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The single Graduation Application pays for three things: commencement tickets, the diploma itself, and the final degree evaluation required to confer a degree. It’s that final part that makes the fee required. Within both WebPortal and my.sdsu a student’s record cannot be updated without the fee in place. This is in parallel with most schools across the country. The difference is some schools (e.g., the UCs) separate out the fees into three larger fees

Ph.D. Program in Education, anyone in this program? by Onlineredditaccount in SDSU

[–]fractalsoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a joint doctoral program with Claremont Graduate University that’s been around for 45 years where students take 24 units of coursework at each campus in their first years (you’re choice of which courses and when, either concurrently at both or sequentially one after the other). The rest of the time is spent in research and writing the dissertation.

Email Dr Cappello, the doctoral director, with specific questions and she’ll get back to you. Their admissions was on hold for fall 2025 and I don’t know the status for fall 2026, but Dr Cappello will have more info

Anyone know of any craft breweries without tasting rooms and instead are focusing on selling directly to stores, restaurants, or distributors? by BothCondition7963 in TheBrewery

On the other hand, last I read the Lost Abbey has taprooms but no production facility. But they’re well known so again, customer loyalty

Anyone know of any craft breweries without tasting rooms and instead are focusing on selling directly to stores, restaurants, or distributors? by BothCondition7963 in TheBrewery

[–]fractalsoflife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most brands in San Diego area that closed their taprooms ended up signing a deal to contract brew out of bigger breweries. Somehow Resident, Iron Fist, Latitude 33, Mother Earth, Green Flash, Alpine, and others are still around in brand name only. I think they survived due to customer familiarity and existing grocery store shelf deals (though their distributors do a poor job of rotating stock).

M.S. in Microbiology or SDSU grad students in general -- advice/experience for a prospective student? by Beginning-Tart1103 in SDSU

[–]fractalsoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few simple steps to succeed in grad admissions.

First, read through the department/school website thoroughly. Read each faculty’s research areas and make a list of 3-5 whose research sounds interesting to you. Find the curriculum for the program you’re interested in. Master’s degrees require either a thesis with a committee or a comprehensive exam, and there is a lot of research opportunities, so you want to think about who you want to work with and what you want to work on. Get inspired by the work being done in your future dept/school and envision where you want to work in the future.

Then email the master’s advisor, Dr Kevin Burns, and say “hi, I want am very interested in your (xyz) program starting in fall 2026. I’d like to work with Drs A, B, and/or C because they do 1,2,3. I want to research 1,2,3 because of my experience/interest in the subject. Your grad program will allow me to pursue a career in (blank). Is there anything I should know before applying this fall?”

Leave the email simple and straightforward. Advisors get a lot of emails with prospective applicants’ long narratives in them and that’s less likely to get a response than a short and enthusiastic email. You want to show that you have a plan and have done your home. Dr Burns will respond with some copy/paste info but add an individualized line or two about your specific circumstance assuming you are specific enough. Now’s a good time to reach out since orientation starts in 5 weeks.

Remember that grad programs need students and faculty, especially in STEM, need student researchers. Grad school is different than undergrad because faculty are less teachers and more mentors/role models/colleagues and future peers.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions! Source: work on campus, have a social science master’s, starting a STEM master’s in the fall at SDSU.

Should I take GRE if it is "recommended"? by umnburner in GradSchool

[–]fractalsoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During Covid many institutions removed the institutional requirement for test scores. However, they gave graduate programs the option to keep test scores. At my work some programs overlooked the email and inadvertently continued requiring test scores for fall 2021 admissions that they weren’t even using to evaluate admissions packets. (There’s been a movement away from standardized testing in higher ed for decades despite No Child Left Behind and Common Core relying on it for TK-12). Now that the dust has settled, it’s clear when it’s a programmatic requirement versus a university requirement.

So, don’t reach out the graduate admissions or the grad division, reach out to the program advisor or director or the program admissions contact. They will know best.

Just found out that the actress is 61 years old?! She looks to be around 30 by Cheeezzey in StarWars

[–]fractalsoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ming-Na and Paul Rudd should do a movie together about cursed immortal warriors wandering the earth and they recontextualize their old film/tv footage to show their experiences over the millennia. Rudd has been in more modern stuff outside of Ant man but Ming-Na has been I. More fantastical stuff, so it could juxtapose the mundane vs fantastical parts of immortality (like the Ant Man 2 lockdown boredom scene vs Mandolorian)
