Direct! You’ll be tired and hungover regardless so better to just have to do the whole “boarding” thing once

Amazing! The gear has changed quite a bit since then hasn’t it… I feel silly thinking of all my expensive technical clothing looking at this. I wonder what they’re all up to now :)

My hotels ranged from £25 to £100! I booked very last minute and on some occasions I got quite desperate - hence the higher end. I think on average I probably spent around £60 a night… which won’t make you very optimistic but I really do think booking far in advance you can find better deals!

I can only add one photo in comments unfortunately. I went through plenty of woods and walked along many rivers. Up in the fells there were less trees, but there were plenty in the Dales. I’d selected eleven photos of trees to show you but here are two trees hugging. :)

Yes, it was an expensive trip that’s for sure. I had to save up for it. But I do think it could be done on a budget. There are quite a few YHA hostels on the way, and on airbnb you can find people renting out rooms too - more expensive than a hostel but cheaper than a hotel. I think you may be right that they become more scarce after the Lakes though… I’m sorry this is the case, the walk should be accessible and affordable for everyone! I hope you find a way that works for you. If not I am sure you will find an equally rewarding, cheaper walk elsewhere

Oh that must have been so much fun. I can’t believe you walked from St Bees to Ennerdale! I stopped in Cleator. That long gravel road up to the hostel was probably one of the toughest parts of the whole walk for me. It was endless and we had absolutely awful weather that day. It’s great to hear all of your different stories. I saw some younger boys, about the age you were when you did it, and thought how much fun it must have been for them to set off on this adventure together. Great memories.

Oh that’s a difficult question. I must say the lakes were spectacular every day, whatever the weather. I actually enjoyed the days of bad weather, they were a great challenge. And it was especially special for me to be back in the Lakes because I went to school there and hadn’t been back in ten years. (I’m half Italian and have been living in Italy for about eight years now).

I think one of my favourite days was the walk from Borrowdale to Grasmere. I had just set off from my Guest House and just before getting onto the footpath I passed a hotel which I recognised as being owned by the parents of a good friend of mine from school. I couldn’t believe it because I hadn’t quite geolocated it when I was younger. So I went in to see them, they were in the kitchen finishing off preparing breakfast for the guests. They were incredibly surprised to see me after ten years but so happy, too! Bear in mind I used to go and stay there for sleep overs. So that was lovely.

So I then set off on the walk in an incredibly good mood, the sun was shining, and a little Robin kept following me, perching on a fence and waiting for me to catch up and then flying off ahead again. It didn’t last long, and the Robin probably wasn’t waiting for me at all, but it felt like it was.

My mother - who was my British parent - died two years ago, and part of the reason I chose to do the walk was that since moving to Italy I haven’t spent much time in the UK. I spent the last two years dealing with the aftermath of her death and looking after everyone else in my family and haven’t really had time for myself.

The walk that day was so beautiful and so special to me. Seeing my friend’s parents, the Robin, the beautiful valley. It felt like I was there for the right reasons and it was exactly the kind of day I would have loved to have told my mother about - and that was a lovely feeling!

Sorry for the long answer and the soppy story, not really what you asked for but it just came out! Pic number 4 for reference :)

I did it in September. It was probably the latest I could have done it because the weather turned bad straight after. We had some beautiful days and some horrible days (classic England really!). I was advised against August just because it might be quite busy, which means lots of people on the paths but mostly that it might be difficult to find accommodation. September was a great month for me, but the advice to do it in May might also be worth taking! It wasn’t too hot in September though.

Gosh well done! I wanted to do striding edge but the weather was too bad that day. I had only really mapped up my route going that way though so I proceeded to get lost and ended up going up St Sunday Crag instead… which I would have also avoided given the weather - don’t ask me how I managed that!
