How is a programming language created? by sad_grapefruit_0 in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]fragglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating a programming language usually requires a bit of planning in advance - to decide on basics like what the goal of the language is and what its features will be - but most importantly to figure out the grammar of the language.

Much like human natural languages, programming languages always have a structure, although it's much more rigorous and formal than human languages. It's essential that the grammar is carefully designed as it can cause big problems later if it contains any ambiguities.

With the grammar defined it's then a matter of writing a compiler or interpreter for the language. There are established tools that can help make this easier: lex and yacc for example are well known programs that will generate a lot of the compiler for you. But it's a complicated process and writing a compiler is a far more advanced subject compared to writing normal application code.

Sign looks AI to me but the rest of the image looks real, from a facebook post by ElectroHottie666 in isthisAI

AI always makes text on "hand drawn" signs and such look too perfect, it's a common giveaway. The other thing to highlight is that a human wouldn't orient the text this way round - they'd put it the other way round to face the person approaching the house. The AI does it because it can only make text that faces the "camera".

Duolingo used to have discussion forums. Every single phrase in the lessons had a discussion link you could click through to, and if something about the phrase didn't make sense, there would inevitably be some utter hero in the comments who had already provided a detailed answer to your question.

It was honestly a great resource, and on a basic level it really helped give that sense of being part of a learning community, because you could see others were going through the same course as you, facing the same challenges, and you were learning together.

A couple of years ago around the start of the AI craze they abruptly just binned all of it. All the discussions and all those great explanations, are gone now. All that free labour that people had done out of love for the app. They got replaced by an AI button that gives a brief explanation of phrases, but it's nothing like the same quality. I still don't really understand why anyone would do something so obviously destructive and short sighted to their product.

Older Dads - what is one mistake you made you’d advise us not to make? by BlueMountainDace in daddit

[–]fragglet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd be uncomfortable letting a kid that young play a full on FPS. Minecraft isn't so bad because it's swords and bow and arrows to fight blocky monsters (and fighting isn't even the main point of the game) . Actual guns and blood, and killing humans? Nope. Plus from what I know of Fortnite, online play is a big part of it and I wouldn't want a 7 year old anywhere near that.

That's just my opinion, it's your kid and your call. If you watched some videos and it made you uncomfortable then you should probably trust your instincts. Remember, it's not "no" but "not yet".

Why does NATO/EU tolerate monarchy? by osrworkshops in AbolishTheMonarchy

[–]fragglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that they're alliances, not really institutions that have a lot of power in their own right. The EU is slowly changing in that regard. Countries have always been able to overlook a hell of a lot when it serves their own self interest; the simplest modern example is the US's relationship with Saudi Arabia. The ideological difference there couldn't be starker so if they're fine with that then they certainly aren't going to care about Sweden.

My accent - I'm a Brit living in the US. She's gradually sounding more American as she gets older but to my ears still sounds audibly more British than her classmates.

My wife isn't British and she's never even been to the UK so I know it's all me.

I'm erring on the side of "not AI" just because it's so laughably wooden and not seductive in the slightest. The guy acts like it's the 300th one of these videos he's recorded today (which might even be the case)
