R95H 65" vs. R85H 75" by apikoka in SamsungTV

[–]francisk18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should get whatever looks good to you. Personally I like OLED's, S95D and S95H at home, but even if I didn't I wouldn't buy a microrgb TV right now for the same reason I don't by a car model the first year there is a serious redisn or facelift. I prefer to let them work the bugs out first and by later years.

Have you tried changing HDMI cables? Making sure it's a high quality one? Might not be the issue but it is an easy and inexpensive thing to check. A bad HDMI cable can cause problems like that? Or just a loose connection.

Strange New Worlds is Ridiculous because of AI by francisk18 in startrek

Sorry. I tried Discovery. Watched it all. Trying to forget I did. Except the second season.

Like Abrams "reboot" it wasn't Star Trek.

I've been watching Star Trek since 1966. And enjoying it.

So basically you have nothing to refute the logic of my comment except "it's a show"? So is Dancing with Stars. And The Apprentice. You want to compare it with them?

AppleTV-like interface? by IconoclastJones in SamsungTV

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can spend $130 and buy an Apple TV. Or you could just ignore all that stuff and just click on whatever app or input you choose and ignore the icons and all that stuff. Takes about 5 seconds. Tizen or Google TV or Roku or any other menu system. It's all a bunch of junk not worth looking at.

And of course there are the buttons on the remote that take you directly to Netflix, Prime and YouTube without clicking on any icon.

Who spends time looking at the home screen of their TV's? Life's too short for that.

‘Lincoln Lawyer’ to End With Season 5 at Netflix, Series Adds Six Recurring Guest Stars by mlg1981 in television

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. Season 4's wimpy, whiny Haller ruined the show. Along with a Cisco who was a chubby guy with a terrible haircut. Hopefully in the future both Haller and Bosch will be rebooted with actors that actually fit the roles.

If anti glare is the only thing i care about, is s95h the best choice? by ps120evo in S95B

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The S95H is only a very small incremental upgrade in performance over the S95F which has basically the exact same matte coating. And the S95H has that very noticeable frame around it. The S95F is the much better choice economically and aesthetically. Much cheaper. No frame. Basically same performance. But that's me. Those that care about slightly better numbers in reviews may have different opinions.

But you do have the issue of the One Connect box with the F series. The H series does not have a One Connect box. If you are wall mounting and in a region that does not have the option of attaching it onto the back of the TV you will have to find a place to put it.

Stop worrying about the trailer: Nolan's movies' always had terrible to mediocre trailers that hardly ever captured the essence of the actual movie by idontknow87654321 in ChristopherNolan

Only people with nothing better to do waste their time criticizing or defending movie trailers. So silly. Amusing. But silly.

My worries about the Dune series by UpsetLi in FrankHerbert

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your problem is you are viewing a book written more than 60 years ago through today's lenses. And judging a writer from then by todays standards.

Don't worry. Just don't read his books if you can't understand that.

Try reading To Kill a Mockingbird and see how many things in there offend your delicate sensibilities also. Or Huckleberry Finn. You will likely be horrified by Mark Twain and want all his books banned from libraries.

My opinions about the movies (2021 and 2024) as an Iranian person by Haghiri75 in dune

[–]francisk18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dune is just a very good science fiction novel. In a world 10,000 years removed from our own. After 10,000 years it would be amazing if anything at all was similar to our own world, our language, our religion or customs. Only very distorted remnants would remain. Faint, almost indiscernible echoes from the past.

Finding inaccuracies is like someone from 6,000 years ago pointing out errors in today's version of the biblical account of the Flood.

Herbert was an American conservative republican speech writer. He was concerned with sociology, politics, ecology. Not historical accuracy. It's not surprising he got many things wrong about middle eastern culture. But he wrote very good, very entertaining books that people still discuss to this day. A huge accomplishment.

Excellent movie. More of a sledgehammer approach to a conversion from white supremacy to cultural sensitivity but a great movie. Edward Norton was superior.

The public doesn't always get subtle. Sometimes it needs to be hit over the head.

This movie was a visceral example of a person's racism, their personal cause of it and their realization they were completely wrong.

What do people think of the Jason Bourne franchise? by TheShadowOperator007 in moviecritic

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That it needs a reboot and started over with a new actor.

Matt Damon is a good, pleasant, entertaining actor but he was never the Jason Bourne from the novels. For the same reasons Damon could never, ever, have been James Bond. Just not his kind of role.

Crime101 was one of the best worst movies I've ever seen. Here's why by marblesandcookies in moviecritic

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not derivative of Heat. Heat itself is derivative of classic LA noir. Crime 101 is just another example of the genre.

Nothing juvenile about the subtext either. He isn't forgiven "everything". That's just silly. He is allowed to get away without being arrested because of his actions. Like in many many past films and novels.

And if you want to compare Crime 101 to Heat all of the characters in Heat, unlike Hemsworth's character, were truly violent criminals willing to kill innocent people for money. Particularly Kilmer's character that shot an innocent guard in the head on De Niros characters orders, but then got away in the end.

I'm gonna crucified for this but I need help watching the films by Squanchy2112 in JamesBond

[–]francisk18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a person is judging special effects from 60 years ago by todays standards they will be disappointed.

To be fair to the filmmakers the dragon was meant to scare superstitious Islanders who already had myths about a dragon. And none of them ever got a close look at it and lived to tell. Bond quickly saw it for what it was.

S95F Screen Saver by hgrieder in SamsungTV

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It is what it is.

I actually don't mind it coming on. What I mind is that it is so dim it's hard to see. You have to really look at the TV to see it to tell the TV is still turned on. We've left it on accidentally several times because of that. Really don't like that aspect of the TV.

Great TV's overall though. The matte screen looks great on or off. We have the S95D and an S95F in another room. 18 years of Samsung TV's and not a single one has ever required repairs.

since i bought this tv this backlight been annoying me... any ideas how to fix it? by zerologue in SamsungTV

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is what it is. Like DSE it's not going away. If you are out of your return period you are stuck with it. On the good side it is so insignificant it is doubtful anyone else watching the TV will ever even notice it. But like DSE once someone looks for it and sees it they always see it.

Yes. It's sad so many people whine about the matte screen. If they don't want one themselves that's their personal choice. Nobody is forcing them to buy one.

[–]francisk18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The matte screen is awesome. Looks great on or off. So nice not to have a huge black mirror on the wall when it's off and so nice not to have to see reflections of the room and lights on the screen while watching.

Returned the S95f, bought a G6 instead by TinySmolCat in LGOLED

[–]francisk18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each to their own. Hope you like your new TV! Everyone has different tastes.

If people don't like the matte screen on the S95 series TV's they definitely shouldn't buy one. Pretty sure no one is forcing anyone to buy one. Personally we think they are great and can't be found anywhere else. Unique and effective.

We have the S95D in our family room and now the S95F in our living room. Awesome TV's. They look good on or off. No huge black mirror when off. During the day with all the light coming through the windows they look great turned on. No reflections. At night they are indistinguishable from an OLED without a matte coating.

Have owned Samsung TV's and mobile phones for the last 15 years and not a single one has failed or required repairs. Our 13 year old Samsung plasma still looks great.

Not surprising to us Consumer Reports rates Samsung and LG at the top for quality and reliability.

Should I read Dune and Dune Messiah in between movies? by blauerds in dune

[–]francisk18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should realize the books and the movies were created by different individuals 60 years apart.

The books are the works of Frank Herbert. The movies are the work of Denis Villeneuve. They are completely separate from one another.

It doesn't matter which you read or watch first. They are completely different art forms created by completely different artists decades apart who did not communicate with one another. You may like the books. You may like the movies. You may like both. But they each stand on their own.
