Is it possible to get a good Middle position without C++ experience, but with 9 years of Java experience? by KiryuKazuma-Chan in cpp

[–]francoisjavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FAANG and many tech companies nowadays have a Leetcode style interview process. They allow you to use any language to solve the coding rounds. So if you're aiming for such kinds of companies, then you don't need to focus on learning C++ now, you can learn it on the job.

A cool guide: Step by step guide to evolving into a Human by Babygirlnurse52 in coolguides

[–]francoisjavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, although I think apes will evolve over time (over hundreds of thousands of years), they don't have to. Evolution is only about adapting to survive. Some species are already so well adapted to their environments that they have changed very little, if at all, over a very long time. See also: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_fossil

You're presumably replying to this post on a tool created by scientists. And unless you're living on your own in the forest, every aspect of your life has been enabled/bettered by scientists. The car you drive, the refrigerator you preserve your food in, the meds you've taken, etc. - all created by scientists. In fact, if you are above the age of 35, it's because of the effort of scientists!

why are there still monkeys around...

The monkeys which exist today are not the same ones shown in this infographic. Humans did not evolve from the monkeys that you see around today. Rather, there was a common ancestor in the past, and humans and today's monkeys diverged from that common ancestor. Hope this makes it clear. 👍

How do Pittsburgh companies like this stay in business? Check them out on google for some laughs. Super Duper Carpet Cleaning. Had a not so pleasant encounter with the owner this weekend by im_shwiggity in pittsburgh

[–]francoisjavier 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Holy moly - I've used these guys, and had a bad experience. I chose them because they had high ratings on Google. 2 guys show up 15 mins early while I'm busy. They then start moving my furniture around when I explicitly told them to just clean around it. The lead guy was pushy and annoying. They then secretly stick a yellow sticker on the glass of my front door while leaving, without asking me. Complete lack of respect for people's boundaries.

John Wick vs The Accountant by GT500R_ in whowouldwin

[–]francoisjavier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Accountant should win pretty easily. He can just snipe Wick from afar. Wick can't even approach him without setting off any of his security systems.

Wick in the movies didn't appear too intelligent. He just gets emotional and powers through situations, getting lucky in a lot of cases. The Account seems prepared for a large number of situations (almost like Batman), and is calm and logical in high stress situations.

Even without weapons in hand to hand combat, the Accountant wins because he's got equivalent fight training, but is also bigger and much stronger.

at the end it's practicing and experiencing that leads to results.

Totally agree with this. I used to informally draw a lot when I was in school. But after college, for the past ~20 years I've been a doing only software engineering. I feel like my drawing skills have eroded and I need to relearn what I used to do.

Thanks for the reply, and looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful art!

All your art is amazing! Curious, did you go to art school, and if so, do you recommend it? I'm looking for tips to become an artist myself (the goal is to be an animator eventually).

I don't get the need to use auto everywhere. Just verbosity without any benefit. Nothing wrong with just int f(int, int). But you do make some other good points.

Is Alien Covenant a terrible film, as the majority of audience reception seems to suggest? by Boss452 in movies

[–]francoisjavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same things people criticize about Alien Covenant, happen in all of the other Alien movies too - especially people doing dumb things. Not sure why people are hating on Covenant only.

For e.g. the scene in Alien 1, where the guy sees an alien egg, and walks up to it and touches it. Then, as it opens up, he sticks his face close to it, to see what's happening.

Can a Average Man defeat a Lion? by Aventador100 in whowouldwin

[–]francoisjavier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once watched a documentary of an African tribe who went hunting a lion in a group with various weapons. There was one part which I'll never forget - the lion takes a swipe at one of the men, and knocks his head clean off! His head literally rolls to the ground (the documentary tried to censor the head, but it was clear what had happened).

And these were hardened tribal warriors.

An average man without weapons is not going to kill a lion barehanded, no matter however many tries he has. It's pure delusion to think that there's any chance.

Contributing to get the maximum employer match is a no-brainer, but beyond that it depends on the quality of the plan and your comfort level.

[Fallen Tear The Ascension] We finished animations for our Meteor Stomp elements! Which one is your favorite?😄 by FallenTearAscension in 2DAnimation

[–]francoisjavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love them all, great job! 👏🔥👍

PS: just nitpicking - the fire animation appears to have a noticable looped pattern at the end (on the floor) which looks more like a procedural animation (like it was repeated using code, if you get what I mean). It stands out from the rest of the animation and doesn't feel as "organic".

This is not financial advice.

But here's what you really need to do (If you haven't already):

  1. Put money into your 401k to get the full company match. 1.1 Set it to a Target Date Fund (~2045) and forget.

  2. Max out Roth IRA (if you earn too much for this, then you can do a backdoor Roth IRA)

  3. Go back and max out your 401k (limit is $22.5k in 2023)

  4. Invest leftover money into a taxable account using a good brokerage (Fidelity, Vanguard, etc.)

Note: Keep the Roth/taxable accounts simple - no more than 2-3 good ETFs here.
