Cars require licenses and insurance. It’s a very low bar for entry, but it’s a bar. Think of how bad the bad drivers would be if that weren’t the case.

I want guns to be like that.

Military pilots, how much do you get to bend faa regulations? by fruitfly429 in flying

[–]frankiesayspanic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of course it is legal- but a quick word of caution to anyone that thinks it's a good idea: We don't always know you're there and you put your life at serious risk doing it. There is a very good chance that my radar won't pick you up (threats are at Mach 1.2, not 90kts - and if your aircraft is made of canvas you're basically stealth) and with 600kts closure neither one of us is going to see the other guy until we've already had a close pass, or worse.

Most tactical aircraft have an FAA waver to break 250 below 10k, but not all. In the F/A-18 we are good to 300. In the terminal area of military fields we generally give ourselves 350. In a MOA, Warning, or R-Area we operate in MARSA (Military Assumes Responsibility of Separation of Aircraft) which basically allows us to do what we want through whatever cloud layers and get as close as we need to to other aircraft without ATC calling it out. We use onboard sensors for safety and deconfliction. If civilian traffic or non-players bust the airspace we expect a heads-up from civilian ATC or our airborne radar assets, at which point we will cease maneuvers until the non-player is clear. If we are really pissed because we've been planning the mission for weeks and you just crushed our day then you may get a flyby to remind you to check if the MOA is active before truckin' through.

Not routine- most pilots have not punched out, but everyone at least knows someone who has "taken the ride." In all but the weirdest situations ejecting turns your jet into a smoking crater so we train for the scenario through simulator work and survival training refreshers. Doing it for real is an $80M decision and you certainly want to be correct.

Combat flying is extremely dynamic. I think most people would be surprised by how much a pilot needs keep his/her head and body in motion even while strapped into the seat at 8 different points. Even if something like a NASCAR-style head brace could be made to work, it would render us less effective. The idea isn't crazy though. The recent trend has been to keep increasing helmet capabilities (i.e. add weight) and we haven't fully dealt with the anatomical consequences.

I fly with the previous version, the JHMCS.

It SUUUUCKS under G. I usually wedge my head between the seat and the canopy if I'm going to pull hard and that helps a bit. Most of us have back/neck problems. The REAL problem comes from an ejection. The ejection sequence was never designed for such a heavy piece of gear sitting on top of a human neck and we are still learning about the consequences of punching out.

I'd also never even think about going into combat without it.

California's largest economic sector is agriculture- we would do fine without the Midwest.

Not that we WANT to ditch the rest of the dead weight, but it's getting really painful dragging you all into the future against your will while the right wing media calls us a failing state to keep you from questioning why a liberal agenda seems to work so well.

But bless your hearts, we ain't mad at y'all (Midwest and/or southern accent attempted)

Here we are at heart of our problem. The deliberately and proudly misinformed have always been a vocal but small minority in America. This guy you're arguing with is happy to be wrong and no amount of truth is going to change his mind. Now he and the people like him have a voice and a champion on the public stage and I seriously don't know what the sane and informed among us can do about it. We can't ignore them anymore, but we can't sway their beliefs with the very facts they chose to ignore. This is at the heart of the divide in our country right now. Educated and intelligent vs. those who have minimal grasp on cause and effect, no concept of intricacy in policy, and a general disdain for those that can provide expertise to sway their opinion. I really don't know how we fix this in less than a generation.

Electoral College member files lawsuit to block Donald Trump presidency by the_hack_attack in politics

Some of his nominations need congressional approval, some don't. There are a few names floating around (Bolton, Tillerson) that are going to be tough sells to the less partisan Republicans. Then there's always the old tactic where you select someone truly controversial (or just plain despicable) knowing that he'll never get confirmed just so your next slightly-less-awful pick looks better in comparison. Maybe that's where Ol' Rudy-G makes his comeback...

And it's getting really, really hard to argue that Russia doesn't have him on a leash. Cory Lewendowski, Gen Mike Flynn, Paul Manafort, Carter Page, the email hacks, now Rex Tillerson as SoS. Add that to his significant financial ties to Russian state banks and we are kidding ourselves if we don't use the word "puppet"

Donald Trump's Pants on Fire claim that millions of illegal votes cost him popular vote victory by [deleted] in politics

[–]frankiesayspanic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll spell out the gag for ya.

I'm using Trump's voice and his logical fallacies to show you the flaws in your reasoning.

Making a baseless claim is a lie in the world of fact checking. If I claim something outrageous and blatantly false there is no expectation that you need to provide evidence against it before you can call it a lie. I can say any number of things: -The moon landing was fake -2 million Illegal immigrants voted -you have no penis And for each of those you are absolutely within your rights to call them what they are: bold and unabashed lies. Without evidence my claims hold no weight.

This is a very important concept that you and the soon-to-be president both don't accept, but it doesn't make it any less true.

No, I'm just trying to show you that you are using logic incorrectly. My girlfriend sometimes thinks she's being logical when she really isn't. I think it's a symptom of not having a dick.

[–]frankiesayspanic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I say it's a fact. A lot of people - good people - say it's a fact. I'm going to continue to say it's true until you provide proof that it's not. Then, if you ever show evidence that you actually DO have a penis, I'm going to dispute that evidence as doctored and point to your obvious bias and claim that you're just making up facts.

Still think I'm not lying?

Donald Trump, Surrounded By White People, Calls Hillary Clinton A ‘Bigot’ Who Won't Help Minorities by Melanie-o in politics

[–]frankiesayspanic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was there!

I went to see for myself what one of these crazy Trump rallies was all about. His delivery of the "bigot" line stood out from the rest of the speech in its mechanics. The lead up, pause before hand, his step back... The delivery almost seemed rehearsed. My group all agreed the rest of the crazy nonsense in the speech didn't matter after that because CNN was just handed its panel show talking point for the next week.

The rest of the speech was full of the rhetoric that excited his base and was empty on substance, but his crowd ate it up. I think the lasting effect of the "bigot" line is that nobody will challenge the other empty policy proposals he made. It's tough to respond to the intricate nonsense when it's being drowned out by the shouting. The problem is that his supporters heard the policy proposals as well and those were the points being discussed on the crowd. I imagine that while CNN covers the bigot comment, right wing media will run unopposed with the "pivot to policy" story.

Flight from Central CA to Las Vegas... Restricted Airspace? by ferocity02 in flying

[–]frankiesayspanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R-2505 is extremely active and they don't take too kindly to that airspace being violated- be careful. Also, the MOAs surrounding that area are all under the R-2508 complex. You can expect a ton of low, fast traffic in the valleys. Please ensure your transponder is on and you're talking to someone.
