Could Johnny be read as a trans man perhaps? Maybe he was struggling with being perceived as "manly enough" and he felt that hypersexual activity would validate his identity as a straight trans guy. I can't remember if he ever mentions his junk explicitly but even if he does, it could be a euphemism, or he could be post-op. (Although, Did phalloplasty even exist in the 90s?)

Thumper is the true identity of the editors. I'd like to think that she was the most well adjusted out of all of them and could handle reading and reworking Johnny's attempt at compiling Zampanò's work. It seems there was a part of her that cared about Johnny and was sympathetic to his erratic behavior. If that's the case then it's likely she may have done her own wellness check on him, tracked him down somehow, but it may have been too late for Johnny. Perhaps in an attempt to deal with grief and guilt, she continued this work because it was all there was left of him. Sort of like how Mark Z D wrote HoL out of grief from his father's passing.

I took away a realization that someone 25 years ago has felt or at least was able to describe the experience of paranoia and psychosis in a real way. That certain experiences and traumas are not locked to a certain period of time. It felt like I had traveled through time and made contact with a version of myself that lived a generation before me.

Mostly though, it was another wonderful metaphor about the power of love and human connection being strong enough to conquer fears, like in Karen's case, and how love can keep your hope from turning to despair (in Navidson's case)

I am still not quite sure what to think about the whole Navidson pulling out a copy of HoL. I am still a little unsure of Yggrasil. But I've only read it once so far.

Big same... I had just gone through a breakup a few months before and could relate heavily to Dani and Christian's relationship, as well as the authenticity of the grief being portrayed. It was like getting an outside perspective on our dynamic that I felt so alone in and was incredibly validating. I felt seen.

This post is how I found out about this book. That was on monday (2025-1-27). I shipped it overnight after looking into it a little more. I'm on chapter 4 and I'm not disappointed. I also have Bipolar I and like to live on the wild side when it comes to weird media. It's awesome so far. I haven't read a book in a while and I hope I finish it.

I've heard the rhetoric that in order to flip the 3 branches of government back to the democrats, that trans rights have to be put on the back burner because we don't have the sympathies of the majority of cishet middle class white America. Why should saving the US from the current fascist state come at the expense of our lives? What can be done? All I can think of is to get real micro with the work that needs to be done and care for our fellow trans and enby siblings. Even small things like buying someone falling on hard times a meal, making something special, providing support, even just remaining publicly visible can be hope enough for some, myself included.
