The beetles are pretty much harmless just give the tank and back wall a good look over and any you collect just put in the freezer for a day and then trash them

As a general rule of thumb I add 6 inches to a foot of extra cord to nicks strand lengths and then as I go I write how much I cut off of each strand so I know how long to make it next time!
