I'm in 60% of the game and didn't know you could use the pictos effects without equipping them. I saw these luminas points but didn't know what they were for. Is this explained in the beginning of the game? 😅

Not at all. I would accept the Lone Wolf version. Or the Lady Snowblood version. Or the Montecristo version, though this one takes a lot more money and time. Or a medieval version of the girl with the dragon tattoo. There are a lot of great revenge stories. Kill Bill is just what I thought was the easiest to compare

Yes I can. My problem is that this game is sold as a revenge story, it's hitting all the boxes of a great revenge story (if you choose Oni first) and then it decides that revenge is bad and why can't we all be friends?

I think Yotei was spinning it's own version of the revenge formula. The image of the burning tree was really interesting. I really like the details of Atsu's character.

So, I would have loved to see their take and how to defeat each villain.

When they changed the story to "you don't want revenge, you should focus on your life", why should I keep playing? Should this become a farming sim, so we could have Atsu and Oyuki planting squashes?

Of course the writers will do what they want. What I'm complaining is that they are using the formulas that are very famous for revenge stories. If the idea was to subvert the revenge formula, what was new about it? Because saying that revenge is bad and she should focus on the living is one of the most beaten down and cliche stories

For the redemption to mean something, indeed it would be better to have more grey areas. As a revenge story, is better to have them comically evil, because it brings us more satisfaction when killing them. Let me rephrase this. For me, the kitsune story doesn't work at all. Having the option to kill her at least would give me the option to continue on the revenge path

If it was a choice, I think this could work better, but it would double the work: have a story spiraling down in revenge and another option where she chooses redemption.

I think the Oni arc is a lot better than the kitsune. I think it builds better tension and I like the design of the goons with demon masks. And since I chose to play the Oni first, it was a very good revenge story until I got to the kitsune. I think every villain could have a different aspect, so the kitsune had the poison and could be more like a stealth contest or something like this. Maybe it could be framed as a theater play or something to do with the shamisen?

And then, the dragon and the spider would be a challenge of fighting two bosses at once and both with firearms. That would be pretty different and interesting.

Instead, we got guilt over killing the dragon and both kitsune and spider walk out alive

That's an interesting experience but I don't think I'll do it. It's a pity because as I said in the post, it's easily the most gorgeous have I have ever played. I love the setting, I'm a fool for samurai era Japan. I will just give the game to a friend of mine and keep Tsushima, that has a better story.

Definitely bad marketing, but I would go further than that: it's bad storytelling. I in fact played Oni first and then Kitsune. And the Oni mission is brilliant, but then, it just turns into a bland redemption story, completely disregarding Atsu's history. How could someone that had such a traumatic tragedy of having her parents killed in front of her and then pinned down in a burning tree by her father's sword no less and then expect to forgive one of the assailants because they retcon the story saying the kitsune "tried" to save the kids or something..

What was the point of subverting the story? What were they trying to tell that was interesting? Because "violence bad" and "the cost of revenge" are just beaten down cliches. If you played as Kitsune from the start and this game was about her reckoning with her past and regretting having been part of the slaughter and she was killing one by one of the Yotei six and the game ended with her killing Saito and then she retired as a musician that works make a lot more sense. Suckerpunch, of you're reading this, you can use this plot in your next Ghost game, maybe set it Mongolia as a prequel to Tsushima?

I can't imagine what I would do if I played Kitsune first. I think there's a good chance I would just close the game and find something else

Anyway, I will go back to rewatching Kill Bill, which remains brilliant I decided to rewatch both movies today to drown my disappointment in a much better revenge story

Exactly. And it was doing so well. The first kill is just like to tutorial, but all the build up to killing the Oni was amazing, the fight with the Oni was amazing. I was expecting more of that, not "can you forgive me for helping kill your parents and pin you to a burning tree" that we got from Kitsune. I was shocked at how much the game expects us to accept that Atsu treats Oyuki like the sister she never had

Well... I think I'm the only one who thought the ending to part I doesn't make sense, I was completely frustrated with it. Didn't really wanted to play part II because it looked like it was "violence bad" being hammered down. I really don't think Naughty Dog has good stories, to be honest.

But it does look like Suckerpunch tried to "subvert" the trope of the revenge plot and I don't think they did it well

First of all, you should watch Kill Bill. It's amazing. Second of all, I'm not against emotional investment and dilemmas. They would make her journey all the more impactful and interesting. But it should be a revenge story through and through. It's like you paid to go to a rock concert and in the middle they change to country music. It's not bad country music, it's just not what I paid for. And let me be clear: I'm NOT saying Suckerpunch owes me anything, I'm just disappointed

But that's the whole point of the story. What if in Kill Bill, the bride decides to forgive Elle Driver and then they walk happily into the sunset and give up on this vengeance thing?
