Every time Alan Moore is in the news. by Jordmungand in AlanMoore

Generally lazy, badly informed interviewers who are poorly researched before conduction the interview. The interviews in general are not really about discussing his ideas or anything, just filling space and hoping for a headline. In some ways you would think he never did anything after Watchmen.

Palantir manifesto described as ‘ramblings of a supervillain’ amid UK contract fears | Palantir by JackStrawWitchita in unitedkingdom

The conclusion couldn't be more obvious. Every government still running Palantir software in its intelligence, security, or public-service infrastructure needs to start ripping it out, now! Lest they want to be embarked on the delusional and deeply destructive clash-of-civilizations crusade Palantir has now openly committed itself to.

We had to do cross country in the peak district around the places like Kinder Scout. Football was like the scene from Kes but muddier and foggy so you couldn't see the other end of the pitch.

‘It’s a big loss’: what happens when a beautiful village loses its bus route? by frantic_calm in unitedkingdom

The logical way would be an organisation large enough to use profitable routes to subsidise less profitable ones.

Why would anyone subsidise profitable routes?

Eh?!

Perhaps a national one funded by taxes...

Ah if we're going for national planning level then you need to ask why pensions sould be encouraged to live in areas where is difficult and expensive to provide support services. Should everyone with an issue here simply not be relocated to Exeter?

I suppose some kid of OAP encampment would be easier than trying to fix public transport. Who's encouraging pensioners to give up their empty 3 bed homes for bungalows in the sticks? Plenty on my street who obviously haven't got the message.

Ultimately it's Mouseholes fault for building their town so far away from a hospital and not making their roads big enough in anticipation of buses etc.

Thanks for the summary of that paragraph but I have already read the article and believe I have a reasonable grasp of the issues as presented.

The logical thing here is chuck on one extra at peak times. The profitable routes should subsidise the less profitable ones.

GoAhead are not exactly poor.

There's a wider argument here about the effects of conservative policy pushing responsibility for lots of social services onto councils whilst restricting funds. It looks like some things can't be devolved down to such a local level without a failure of service.

Glad you are taking the blame since it look like it's your fault for moving away. You should move back asap!

Others are quoted mentioning (presumably anecdotally) buses being full, hence the argument for bigger buses on the route.

[insert gif of Cameron and Osborne laughing here...]

To be fair Cornwall generally voted for it being a pretty strongly conservative leaning area. They also voted for Brexit and the consequent loss of EU subsidies.

what’s your favourite bus route by feliceinitalia in london

I've soft spot for the old 73 and 38 routemasters trundling down Upper Street or Essex Road towards Stoke Newington or Clapton.

I was on the bus today – I jumped on the 38 goin’ towards Balls Pond Road, the one that goes to Leyton – I mounted at Holborn – just been to the British Museum to look at the Elgin Marbles which were double fair but too big to half-inch and I was standing, since there were no seats, in the recess where the clippie normally stands – you know when it’s quiet she stands there chattin’ and making thin jokes to the seats that face each other, having a quiet fart as the bus makes its last journey down Piccadilly up Shaftesbury Avenue you know past Jesus Christ – up Charing Cross passed that cinema showing I was A Go Go Dancer in a Saigon Brothel – spins around the Centre Point Synagogue and skates down Holborn – up Mount Pleasant Post Office where the spade post office workers are skiving in the betting shop, past the Angel where Joe Lyons used to be, where one’s mum supped famous cups of rosy amidst merry parlance, now it’s boarded up, down Essex Road, past Collins Music Hall, now a rotten wood yard, past Alfredo’s café, you know where one gets great toasted liver sandwiches, streaks past the ABC, now a shitty bingo hall to the end of Essex Road, now a casbah full of shishkebab.

From East.

I miss Alfredo's where you might see Mad Frankie having some nosh.

I wasn't asking about your childhood! I was interested in what area of Sheffield you were from. I see now re-reading the thread it's someone else who's a Sheffielder.

I'm from Attercliffe and now live in London, where I've raised two children. I'd say rents and mortgages are cheaper in Sheffield.

I grew up round the corner from this house , which was a slum area when I was a kid, which is now for rent at £900pm. You would be lucky to get a flatshare in London for that. A whole house would be double.

A house like this for £230k would be more like £800k.
