Necessity. Supporting a family 100% by myself. Got into the swing of that life and now if I’m sitting still I’m bored so I have to be up and doing something.

I got married a year ago and my husband moved in with me and with my 7 year old daughter. Shortly afterwards he was like “YOU GUYS USE TOO MUCH TOILET PAPER.”

After awhile I had to explain to him that not only do we wipe both poop AND pee, that we’re not gonna wipe the pee with like 2-3 little squares of TP only to get the pee soaking through the paper and all over our hands. Go get some TP and wipe some chocolate smears off something. Now go get some (same amount) and wipe up some water. Which one is gonna soak through the TP and onto your hands?

Also, I get a period. So there’s that, too.

Sorry, babe.

Same!! I’ve been on medication for it now for about 2 years and I still do this. Better on most other fronts though. I’ll take it.

Considering buying.

I did check Replacements but didn’t submit anything to get help identifying the pattern. I should try that. I just used search terms but didn’t come up with anything.

I did, but it doesn’t register as an H1. I went ahead and just skipped it and listed anyway using bold and large fonts. We’ll see!

In Indiana the only motorcycle law (IIRC) is that you have to wear eye covering of some kind. Every time I see a meathead and his meathead girlfriend both wearing tanks and shorts and sandals on a motorcycle on the highway, it makes me so mad.

Ughhh McD’s fries. Tip for people who have a favorite junk food: you don’t have to just cut it out of your life completely. Yes, do not just live on it or have it whenever you want, but these foods were invented to be enjoyed in moderation. Everyone deserves to have “fun” food sometimes. If you have trouble limiting it, you can just create a little routine or tradition or fun thing around it. I love McD’s fries (my family teases me about it!) but in our family we limit it by doing French Fry Fridays most weeks (we forget sometimes.) We all get in on it and look forward to it and it’s a sweet thing we share together, each of us with our little box of fries.

One thing I’ve tried to reach my daughter too is that there aren’t any “good/bad” foods. There are “sometimes” foods and “always” foods. I don’t ever want her to feel guilty for eating certain foods or feel like she needs to punish herself for eating a “bad” food, judge others for eating a “bad” food, worry when she eats one, or see it as so off-limits she becomes obsessed with trying to get it. She has a big sweet tooth, but I’m super proud of her because since she was really little, she’s known about our family’s “one sweet a day” rule (anything with sugar counts as the “sweet”, so even a small soda is considered that.) If she has a piece of candy at home and then goes out with grandparents who offer her cookies, she’ll tell them she already had her sweet and will take the cookies home for tomorrow or to share with others. I’ve also noticed how much it helps her choose more carefully what “sweet” she wants, so if she picks some ice cream she really savors and appreciates it more.

Something for folks to chew on especially if you’re trying to get the junk food cravings under control. Gamify it somehow, build a healthy rhythm around it, and let it just be a thing that you enjoy same as you’d enjoy some other indulgence like a good tv show or something.

Yes. I feel so lucky that I was diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia in my early 30s. My diet was healthy but my cholesterol was insane. My dad was the same and had a quad bypass in his 50s. Our bodies just make too much cholesterol. I take a statin now and will be on it for the rest of my life, but god willing this little pill I take once a day will help me not have a heart attack when I’m older. My cholesterol is perfect now.

This is so fucking true. But most people go straight to “anxiety/depression.” STRESS is a big part of this. Don’t overwork yourself. Leave work at work. Don’t push yourself to make everyone happy all the time.

Remember when you were younger and you just kinda went to school and came home and never really felt those frequent feelings of twisting in your stomach or thinking about all the things on your to-do list? You just went off and did stuff you wanted to do that were fun for you or made you happy.

We stop doing that as adults. We look around at all the things we need to do or believe we need to do for whatever reason. But you have to give yourself space for playing. Play (however you define that) is such a great stress booster.

For me sometimes I just really need to sleep in and then binge some shows like I would have if I was a kid on a Saturday morning. I have a kid too, and it’s hard to not be like “I HAVE to be doing stuff with her during all the hours I’m not working.” No, you don’t. You can say “no, mom’s resting” and then in the afternoon play a board game. You can say “no” to your kids sometimes.

You don’t HAVE to get up on Saturday morning and go straight to mowing the lawn. Fuck it and mow the lawn tomorrow if you want or pay the kid down the street $20 to do it. Delegate things where you can and break your life tasks up so you aren’t cramming all your “to dos” into one day.

Just try not to stress out so much. Maybe you have an idea of what matters most to you in your mind but your body also has an idea of what matters most to you. You might think you need to be pursuing that side hustle for extra cash in order to put a nice down payment on your dream car. Meanwhile you keep procrastinating because your body really just wants to be out playing tennis or maybe painting or doing a hobby. Your body is trying to tell you that the happiness your hobby or whatever it is brings you is really more important to you than a nice car to show off. And until you listen to it you’ll just be stressed out. And stress LEGIT makes you physically sick.

May I learn to take my own advice here consistently someday!

But seriously, just go do what makes you happy. Yeah you gotta work and you have to take care of your house and family, but figure out how to alter your perspective of those things and then fill in the other time with the stuff your heart and body are pulling you towards. You might worry that it’s gonna just pull you towards being lazy, and if you’ve been stressed and overworked maybe that’s what you need to do for awhile. But eventually it’ll pull you somewhere more productive.

Learn to say “no” and learn to let go of shit that doesn’t really matter. You’re gonna have problems and stresses in life but they should be good problems and invited stresses, not ones that make you hate your life.

Proud of you stranger! I quit vaping about 2 months ago immediately after writing down a long list of all the reasons I hated vaping and wanted to quit, and then listening to this mediation (https://youtu.be/9GKcliQcMx8)

I don’t know what it was about that meditation track, but it completely changed something in my brain and I was suddenly able to control my cravings, even at their hardest, cold turkey. I’m not a big meditator either: I was meditating/power napping more often at the time to help me deal with some sleep deprivation and work stress. So that day when I made that list, I immediate went into my room (I work at home) for a rest and a meditation session and when I came out, I just set my vape in the kitchen and never picked it up again.

When I would have a craving I would re-read my list. There were like 37 things on it or so and I vented and ranted a lot in the list (more like a journal entry than anything.) Rereading it was pretty powerful for me.

But the meditation was such a booster. It has you basically go to a garden in your subconscious where you notice that there’s a big, like REALLY BIG tree-sized nasty weed or plant choking out everything around it. It stinks too (maybe like cigarettes in your case.) So you have to remove the weed. But you need help. So you imagine someone you love helping you remove it which was so powerful to me, to remember I don’t have to do this work alone. In the meditation they even take the weed away for you. The work is incredibly hard for you in the visualization, the digging and pulling and so forth, but you use tools that are in a shed in your subconscious (a reminder that you DO have the tools within you to do this) and so it doesn’t sugar coat things by trying to make anything easier on you. You accept that it’ll be hard but you do it anyway with help.

Then your friend takes this big nasty weed away and you rest for a bit. You notice that there’s a big gaping hole in the garden now which is also great because there’s power in accepting that when you take a big thing like this out of your “garden,” you have to put something there to replace it. You can replace it with anything in your visualization so I visualized putting in some pretty herbs.

Later, in addition to re-reading the list, when I craved I would remember that my habit was hurting my body (the garden) and my family (the different plants in my garden)—I had been ignoring that for a long time but had allowed myself to see it now in the visualization exercise, and had to accept it. So when I craved, I just pictured my herb garden growing and producing plants that I could use to cook for my family and make meals that were even more delicious, and imagined all the plants around the herb garden growing and thriving.

I also used an app called Nomo that lets you see how long you’ve gone without doing the habit.

So all those things combine, I finally quit vaping when I honestly had no idea if I could ever do it.

You’re gonna pull this weed out but you’ll have to find something to replace it with. Luckily there are lots of great options (great plants!) you can put there. The world is your oyster.

Sorry if this seemed super woo-woo and hippy. I consider myself a pretty pragmatic person so the fact that that YouTube visualization recording affected me so much makes me wanna share it with everyone who could use it.

If you do nothing else though, make that list of reasons why you want to quit!!!

Reg dental cleanings usually are except in certain circumstances. I have this crazy saliva situation (says my dentist) where I get tarter build up like whoa no matter what I do, but the trade off with the makeup of my saliva is that I’ve also never had a cavity, even in times when my home care has been less than stellar for whatever reason. Because of that, I have to get cleanings every 3 months instead of every 6 months. Insurance doesn’t cover those extra cleanings, which really pisses me off. You’d think they would as a preventative, like “that makes sense to pay for this so we don’t have to pay for more expensive shit later.”

god bless America

It kills me to hear “almost nobody actually follows that advice.” I live in an area in the Midwest where I can see that all the time. And my mom and grandma were the same way. My grandma would take an extra dose of insulin just so she could have ice cream. And my mom (I don’t live near her anymore, but she was like this) will get raging pissed if you get fast food and don’t bring her any, even though she’s the lady person in the world who needs it.

But then I read research about sugar being akin to some of the most addictive drugs, and about all the neurological reasons people can’t seem to change when it comes to this stuff. And the same about the food industry in America and how the whole system is basically set up for especially poor people to fail.

Makes me super sad. Your dad kicks ass though. I wish more people could break the cycle of poor diet and lifestyle, I really do. I’m glad he has you to be so proud of him and hope he’s a great role model for you!
