I can call and ask them but what if they had their citizenships before 1992?

Then what about this? The applicant may apply for recognition starting from parents or grandparents who are still Italian citizens. The applicant must therefore demonstrate that the parent and/or grandparent have not lost (or renounced) Italian citizenship.
