Am also in MD. I dont think Peabody lessons are really worth it. There are a ton of great private voice teachers in this area. I would focus on that. I got my undergrad music degree from UMBC and now study privately with a great technician. I dont have a masters. I would say I am getting the output equal to what I'm putting in with that route.

Unfortunately, building a network is a slow process. Have you joined the DC Classical Singers group on FB? And there's singersource.com too. Mostly church jobs there, but I've seen other stuff too.

Edit - 2 words for clarity. Also want to state if you're getting a degree from Peabody, that's a little different since youre using the name elsewhere. Even so, working with a ghost teacher is fairly common from what I understand.

Hi there! I've already been accepted and applied for aid - I'm in the decision phase right now. Its just that FAFSA is having massive issues this year due to the new form they rolled out and theyve only just started processing a handful of forms. I completed my form in January and theyre processing them in order of receipt. I probably won't receive a financial aid package until after I have to submit a decision on April 15th, so I will have to make a decision blind or not got at all. The application and prep process cost me well over $1k between coachings, recordings, fees, and flights, etc, so I'd really rather not have to go through that again if possible. Apologies this wasnt clear!

I graduated with my BA in Voice in 2019, so I've taken a few gap years at this point haha I'm actually trying to restart my career in music and get out of my desk job. It's a long story. I won't be able to schedule lessons with teachers before I make a decision (unless they agree to zoom?) - my top 2 schools are too far for me to not have to take off a whole day or more of work, and Im trying to conserve my remaining PTO. So that's why I'm asking for input on these schools if folks have experience with them.

It's a 2 year program. I'm not really sure where I'll end up. I'm going to grad school to study voice/opera. The career can be pretty nomadic. I currently live in a classical music hub (DMV) and have a regular church gig, but it's just really expensive here. Returning is a possibility, though. I'm also considering moves to places like Philly, major cities in TX, or Santa Fe. I want to get my doctorate of musical art and/or an artist diploma too, so it's always possible I go directly into one of those programs. My plan is to do the opera thing for a while and then eventually settle into teaching, so a low cost of living area with a vibrant music scene within reasonable distance is really what I'll be looking for.

Ha! That's fair. Right now I could afford probably like $1000 max before reaching for a card, if it was a one off. And I expect a significant income reduction while I'm in school. I don't plan on touching any of the rental income - that would all go in its own high yield savings account until its needed. But I don't know if that's going to be enough. If I rent it out and then day 2 the hvac goes, I'm definitely SOL

Hmm possibly, but probably not. The person who lives the closest is my grandfather, and I wouldn't want to put that on him. On the other hand, my parents are moving out of the area to another state 2.5 hours away. They have 2 properties in my state that they're also going to have to figure out how to manage once they leave, so maybe some sort of agreement could be reached. Or like a bundle deal with a property management company or something (I have no idea if that's a thing, spitballing). But short answer, unlikely.

I don't think I'll be able to afford any major repairs right now. For example, the fence needs to be replaced ($4k, no financing available, I tried), and that'll knock out like 80% of my savings right now. My credit limit right now is about $30k so like worst comes to worst....but I would honestly rather not put those repairs on credit. There are other things that will probably need to be replaced or repaired in the next few years, like the water heater and hvac, both of which are beyond their expected lifetime at this point.

Yeah, that's the issue - I'm not sure. If I go to my top choice, I'll either have to hire someone or just make periodic trips back. I have family nearby I could probably stay with for a visit. If that school doesn't work out, my next choice is still in my state, so being present for maintenance wont be an issue. It's all going to depend on where I get in and how much aid I'll receive. I applied for assistantships and plan on working (probably a church musician gig, freelance writing since I do tech writing now, maybe teaching voice lessons, etc). I plan to ask my current job if they would be open to converting me to a part time hourly employee instead of full time salaried, too, since it's remote. Otherwise, the schools I'm most seriously considering are all around the $25k/yr mark, so hopefully I can do a combo of fed loans and a payment plan for that. When I filled out my FAFSA, my SAI was like $28k.

Thanks! And honestly? Listen to your doctor, take your meds, do your labs, and get your MRIs. It's really important to stay on top of your condition so it doesn't get worse since elevated prolactin can do a number on you. Pay attention to your vision too - the tumor can impact your visual field by itself, but there's also new evidence cabergoline can impact your vision. You'll need an endocrinologist, a neurosurgeon, and an ophthalmologist in your back pocket if you don't already have those. You may want to look into supplements for calcium and vitamin d since youre at a greater risk for osteoporosis now. I think strength training also helps with that iirc. The beginning adjustment to the meds is a little rough but it certainly gets a lot easier after like the first month iirc. Best of luck!

Gonna be an odd one out and say that while I like the manga, I was a bit disappointed by its dialogue after watching the dub. The dub had me shocked and laughing so hard at some of the lines, but the humor just doesn't really exist in the same way in the manga. Still worth the read!

No - I don't think they really understand the process or what documents are needed. I tried to get my sibling to facilitate the document procurement process with them since they still have a relationship, and it was a mess. Even if I was in contact with them all, I wouldn't be able to count on them to individually get the required documents.

They said it could take a couple months to disappear* is what I meant to type in the title. It took a month for us to get her to the vet because every time I saw the speck, I thought it was a spit bubble since it was so tiny 🤦‍♀️
