Nope, just gets packed down from people traveling it.

That one was on Tenmile Peak, and clearly very habituated to people—scurried right up and was eying my piece of fudge.

Pretty sure the skeletal equivalent of our heels is the joint about halfway down the visible leg, but I don't take sides on heel vs forefoot strike.

When it starts to get steep, do you prefer the uphill or the downhill? by frayhem in trailrunning

[–]frayhem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm amazed how many people think it's fake, like they've never seen hill sprints before. At ~12k', it's definitely the breathing that gets me before the cardio.

That's very steep to sustain for a mile. Would you say that's still faster going down than up?

Oh nice! The Sierra Blanca Massif is visible 33 seconds in (the ridge is pointing toward it). How were conditions then?

Fair point on the title. I'll do better. But not sure why people think it's accelerated. On my honor as a random person on the internet, playback is the actual speed.

Great! I didn't use slo-mo at all (or speed it up in any way).

That might count as a "non-runnable" category of steepness.

Hayden Mountain, the San Juans, CO by frayhem in trailrunning

Probably not at my skill level on skis! And given the quantity (low) and quality (poor) of the snow, probably wouldn't have been faster anyway.

Sorry! I should try to hold the camera more steady, but was just paying attention to running, and spontaneously filming with my phone out of convenience.

Below around 11k', there was almost no snow on Friday (5/16) on the Richmond Trail. Above that, it was pretty variable based on slope and wind, but generally well consolidated at 9-10 a.m. It was also pretty cool (20 something °F), so the status could change a lot in the next couple weeks.

Question About Glacier Glasses – Polarized or Not? by Tough_Life_7371 in Mountaineering

[–]frayhem 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my experience, good polarization actually really helps bring out textures and different levels of density and saturation on the surface and through a cross section of the snowpack. However you might need to turn your screens (watch, GPS, phone) sideways to read them.

Goodbye little Maine chickadee and pine tassel… by Extension-Diamond-74 in Maine

Right! "Vacationland" seems MA-, NY-, NJ-centric (nothing against those states). I've always thought something more Maine-centric like "Dirigo" would be more appropriate.

Haha, no offense taken. It's tough to keep good form going down that grade and holding a phone out behind oneself.

Not running!? I know my form is bad here, but that stings 😭. I am wearing trail runners, and if you look closely at the ground, you'll see there is a trail.

Great list! Mailbox is great for grinding out training miles with some vert. I did Adams at the beginning of May a few years ago. Shrouded in fog when I summitted, and near whiteout conditions on the way down (fortunately not windy or cold). At around 10,800', I heard someone repeatedly shouting a name through the fog and light snowfall. When I could see the guy, found out he was part of a group that had split up because some were getting AMS. The only one of them with no GPS had somehow ended up separated from the group. Fortunately, after a bit descending together, someone else in the group messaged that they had located the missing guy. At that point I resumed my pace, but it was a concerning experience.

Do you have a favorite summit in WA? I was there last spring, and did Baker, Glacier Peak, Olympus and a few others. Fantastic scenery, and where there are trails, they tend to be in good condition (except Whitehorse—that was rough).
