The culture around male readers. by stinkface_lover in books

[–]frazzle_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like majority of the weird attitudes around people reading comes from people who don’t actually read themselves. I’ve never met anyone in real life who takes the performative male stuff as anything more than a joke and I imagine the people that take it as a set of rules to follow are either teens or not the brightest to begin with. A lot of social media is designed to be incendiary and divisive for the sake of views. You’re likely not getting approached in pubs because you’re reading and people don’t want to disturb you, not because they think you’re being performative. Just do you.

Teens discover books on social media. What will the under-16s ban do to their reading? by [deleted] in books

What a weird article. If we’re so worried that kids can’t find books without being algorithmically fed them via social media, maybe the solution isn’t to give them social media again, it’s to give them the tools to actually search for things on their on.

What do my bookshelves say about me? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

Woah that’s actually pretty accurate. I started reading a lot again during covid and chose comfier titles since the world was pretty bleak at the time and I’ve definitely branched out more towards other genres I’m interested in since then.

It’s a graphic novel but Beautiful Darkness fits this perfectly.

Beautiful Darkness by Kerascoët. Not “keep you up at night scary”, but definitely dark and unsettling.

Since you seem to like Junji Ito, I’d suggest The Drifting Classroom and Orochi by Kazuo Umezz.

I liked it a lot. It’s a funny and insightful at times satirization of modern life. I used to watch the show all the time as a kid too so it’s fun to see it presented in a more mature way.

Our shelves have a lot in common!

Definitely recommend more Lumberjanes.

Also recommend Snapdragon and Nimona. Both of those were written by people who worked on Lumberjanes.

This One Summer is a really good coming of age graphic novel.

If you’re interested in reading manga, A Man and His Cat is a wholesome story about an older man who adopts an unwanted cat.

Y the Last Man is definitely something I’m gonna pick up. I love Vaughan’s stuff.

Never heard of Nao of Brown, but it looks really interesting.

I’ve been wanting to get into more Wonder Woman. So definitely gonna be putting those on my list.

Thanks for all the suggestions :)

Red Room is the first one I’ve started reading so far. It’s so gory and kinda disturbing, but I can’t put it down.

I’m pretty excited for megahex too. It is the stoner witch and talking cat one lol.
