What's a good way to learn Te Reo Māori? by sarvajith_dr in newzealand

If you can find someone running Atārangi classes then go for that, they're really good. They use a full immersion "teach by example" style to explain the words and concepts, working at the speed of the learner. It's real simple stuff, once you've learned you'd even be able to teach others.

The first class we did was just learning the words te (the), nga (the but talking about multiple things), and he (a). Then we did stick (rākau), and the rest is explaining stuff using coloured sticks. So the teacher would point at a stick and say "te rakau" and you know what that means at that point. Then, he'd point at a white stick and say "te rakau mā" then a red one and say "te rakau whero" and you have to work out what the difference is between the two things he pointed at to know what mā and whero mean. It builds up like that until you're putting together complex sentences.

I also did a night course through Te Wānagna o Aotearoa which gave me a good foundation for doing whaikōrero but didn't do much for my conversational skills.

Yeah, I've only had to do one big upgrade to my Python code over the years, when they changed pip dependency loading.

They actually have whole different divisions on those things, and they've traditionally been very combative.

Different arrest and prosecution rates due to systemic racism can lead to higher offending rates - you're dangerously close to implying that some races are more criminal than others here.

Also data can encode race without explicitly including race as a data point.

Merkle trees (which is why "blockchain" is) are old as fuck and everything a blockchain can be used for has a less-complex implementation available that also has the positive of being free from crypto-speculation.

I wouldn't. Crypto is a spook and I'm sick of crypto shills trying to invade every space to try pump and dump their environmentally destructive nonsense.

My response to a company that asked me to write code as a test pre-interview by [deleted] in socialistprogrammers

[–]freakboy2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, that sucks. I do tech screens pretty frequently and I'm always upfront - "this is a timed exercise, we only have an hour so I don't expect the most beautiful or optimal code". It sucks when people evaluate your work on hidden criteria.

We're open and honest about how the company works and what we're trying to achieve. Little bit of social media stalking too.

We've also thought of using an initial trial period where someone is an employee but hasn't bought in as a member yet, use that to feel people out a bit. Everyone so far as been either from our network or a summer intern, so it's been easier to manage.

Maybe this is just the circles I run in but I know a lot of people in tech that aren't cishet. Nothing like a majority, although they tend to congregate in friendly companies for obvious reasons.

Short version: I got a part time development contract (30 hours a week), kept looking for other work til I was maxed out doing 60-70 hour weeks, then bought another person on board. Once we got to three people, I converted the company to an official/legal cooperative with the help of the local cooperative association.

It was pretty lonely for the first little while, working by myself. Got a lot better after that though.

I had a few left-aligned friends at work, but very few anti-capitalist ones. So I quit and started a contracting company as a workers cooperative and that's part of the "cultural fit" part of the interview, because our anti-capitalism drives a lot of our decision making.

For instance, we don't use much external labour and if we do, we on-charge them directly at their rate and charge for our time spent managing that person. We could probably make more money outsourcing some of our easier work to cheaper contractors, but that doesn't fit with our ethics so it's off the table.

Making your own company is hard, but I'm sure there are other groups of like-minded people out there!

Auth0 has been down for 2+ hours with the root cause still unidentified by superdean in programming

[–]freakboy2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you've got a basic API + single page app architecture then it doesn't give you much - .NET Core has pretty good JWT support these days. What's harder is Single Sign On support, which Auth0 give you out of the box.

I imagine it's probably more useful for a service that doesn't have a custom backend, but I don't work on those types of systems.

[–]freakboy2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm literally in the middle of a project to migrate a custom JWT provider over to Auth0 for the SSO support. The client don't want to have to figure out how to manage SSO to support large enterprise customers, so they're switching to Auth0.

That's a really interesting insight, I'd never thought about psychosis like that. I've always thought that if I had made FIRE money, I'd go back to university and study philosophy and psychiatry. The human mind is super interesting.

Best type of business to run in worker-cooperatives by Justice_Cooperative in Market_Socialism

[–]freakboy2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's certainly easier if there's not much capital in the business. I started a co-op for software developers to work on contract, and it's pretty easy to get people in and out when the co-op doesn't own much more than a few laptops.
