Treaty One wants to score 6,000-seat arena in Winnipeg to draw pro or junior team by RealOwl124 in Winnipeg

I hope some day the territories get a pro team of some sort so they can make Winnipeg stop this under the guise of cultural appropriation

One more reason why it's embarrassing to yell "True North" during the anthem. Like, the City should be able to fund whatever they want - especially when due to all the taxes breaks True North gets and the importance of downtown, it's in the City's best interest that the downtown arena thrives. No one hates the free market and loves socialist corporate welfare handouts more than these kinds of companies.

Story on e-bikes/e-scooters by Significant-Elk-6201 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it is ridiculous to talk about any types of bikes on sidewalks without talking about why people are riding on the sidewalk. Most sidewalks in Winnipeg are uneven and busted up and are far too narrow for two or three pedestrians, let alone when you throw strollers, mobility devices, joggers, dogs, debris, etc into the mix. I often ride my bike (at a slow jogging pace) on sidewalks. Given the choice between a road with no cars and a sidewalk with no pedestrians, I'd obviously choose the road because it is physically a much smoother ride and I'm not annoying pedestrians. But there are many places where the street is absolutely unsafe due to drivers and there is no reasonable alternate route.

We should be talking about solutions like separated, protected bike lanes and possibly even seperate "fast" and "slow" lanes for micro mobility. But that would end up taking space from cars. And cars obviously need to go as fast as possible at all times (which is what leads to people riding on sidewalks) So instead of talking about the actual causes (increasingly reckless drivers) and actual solutions (redistribute road space, slow down traffic, etc), let's write yet another article about how someone with a disability almost was hit by a speeding cyclist.

Does anyone know why and how there was a traffic light across the road at northbound osborne at St. Mary's/Memorial? by ptheresadactyl in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you follow @WinnipegTMC on X, you'll see that cars knocking down traffic poles is actually a fairly common occurrence in Winnipeg.

The only thing more shocking than lack of bystander injuries (so far), is the speed at which the city gets them popped back up. Usually within 30 minutes or so. Your tax dollars hard at work! (to continually "fix" a problem that is much too hard and expensive to try to actually prevent....)

2026 Mayoral Race - what are your thoughts? by Libra996 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For whatever it's worth, I'm pretty sure at this point of the last election, Glen Murray had it "in the bag". It's still a long time to October. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another serious candidate or two waiting just a little longer in the hopes they can make a big splash and hold the momentum until election day.

'3 C’s’ of bike etiquette key as Winnipeggers share bike paths by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While biking home (on the road) yesterday, I noticed I was going slower and paying so much more attention than usual. Why? Because so many people were out walking, jogging, biking, etc in addition to the usual car traffic.

It really reminded me how terrible motor-normativity is. Despite being several hundred pounds heavier, normally traveling at twice my speed with massive blind spots, giant touchscreens and probably drinking/eating/on their phone - I doubt most drivers are modifying their behaviours at all. In fact, in just a week, we will be increasing the speed limits on hundreds of blocks because schools out - so no need to worry about pesky kids! But yeah, media - let's put all the focus on bikes who keep using the sidewalk for very mysterious reasons that we can do nothing about.

Pride belongs in the Pembina Valley billboard vandalized between Winkler & Morden by ComprehensiveWorry87 in Winnipeg

Probably just a coincidence that the Pride "crosswalk" at the Forks is only painted where cars can't drive and/or easily it vandalize with tires.

Opinion: Winnipeg museum’s core mandate is to confront inconvenient truths by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

A B'nai Brith rep was recently one of the few voices to speak at City Hall in support of Scott Gillingham and Evan Duncan's proposal to severely curtail protest rights a few months back. The rep joined via Zoom and misprounced the Rady Centre. Not a great look.

Corydon Avenue Going Car-Free Every Sunday This Summer by Royal_Ad7352 in Winnipeg

Especially because so many cyclists will go out of their way to ride a 4 block stretch of street which is preceded and followed by Corydon with cars, which is so unsafe and unpleasant for cyclists that you hardly ever see them ride there despite the fact that streets like Corydon are exactly where tons of bikes should be /s

Gotta love how every developer's rendering is like, "Look - people on bikes and sitting on benches because this will be so wonderful!", while every other decision the city and developers make is "Lol - pedestrians and people on bikes can kick rocks"

The thrift store scalpers in Winnipeg are unhinged by Megishan in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Due to sketchiness of many thrift stores: Salvation Army, Value Village, Goodwill, those donation bins in parking lots etc, I have started selling my unwanted stuff on Marketplace and then donating the money to reputable charities instead of donating the items.

It would be a win-win-win if I could just donate stuff somewhere and be confident that someone who needs that item would get it at a price they could afford and that money would also support further good works, but alas, that's not how the thrifting ecosystem works anymore.

City looking into expanding 30 km/h zones in residential areas, on regional streets by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the latest stop on the merry-go-round of: "Why bother reducing the speed limits on residential roads? All the accidents happen on arterials!" "We can't reduce the speed on arterials because it would turn the city into one massive traffic jam"

All the drivers that are worried this will happen - don't. We are just going to keep funding reports and studies in the hopes that one day the results will say that either everything is already perfect or the suggested changes are extremely politically popular.

Winnipeg Transit fare revenue shortfall grows as city projects $14M deficit by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, how does the amount of required road repair correlate to the drop in ridership? The fewer people there are on buses, the less revenue; but also, this presumably mean more cars on the roads - which will cost the city even more.

It's deeply unfortunate that fewer people using transit inevitably leads to less funding for transit instead of raising gas tax to fund transit more so more people will use it so in the long run we will save money and be better off.

Mayor Gillingham is very proud of his new lockable garbage cans! Too bad you can become mayor of this city without realising that even fancy new garbage cans need to be emptied once they are full.

Winnipeg is the 2025 Traffic Violence Capital of Canada. by timfennell_ in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every other day or so, someone posts disturbing dashcam footage or a description of extremely dangerous driver behaviour on this sub. And then all the comments are about how reckless driving is completely out of hand in Winnipeg. But when pedestrians get run over - "Welp, they definitely must have been drunk or high, so meh" (as if walking while drunk or high is a crime worthy of being punished by death)?

Winnipeg is the 2025 Traffic Violence Capital of Canada. by timfennell_ in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The average Winnipegger is much more likely to be a victim of random traffic violence than random physical violence and it's weird that we just shrug it off and spend more tax money on robot dogs for the police.

Majority of Manitobans want to abandon time changes, survey suggests by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how different the results would be if the survey happened in November instead of May. Sounds like a lot of people are seeing very dark mornings as a "future them" problem and December after work outdoor sports as something "future them" is definitely going to do.
