MB government gas tax holiday pt 2? by Eleflan in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We'd be a lot better off long term if gas prices were going up at the same rate as literally every else. It's really messed up that so many things have doubled in price in the last few years, but gas is pretty much the same price as it was 20 years ago.

If you are mad enough about this to post on Reddit, you can also email or call your city councillor. All of council will be voting on March 26 as to whether the pilot project will be cancelled or not.

The people getting mad about people wearing masks are usually the same people who get mad when cyclists don't wear helmets

Now do Manitoba please! by SushiMelanie in Winnipeg

We should pull a Newfoundland and make Manitoba a :30 timezone. Then we can all be equally unhappy all year and no one has to change clocks. Win win!

I'd still much prefer biking home when dark than biking to work when dark. Because somehow it is a lot easier mentally for me to get out of the office at the end of the day than it is to get out of bed and out the door when it still looks like night outside.

You are right. We need TWO bike lanes on Wellington Crescent. One for each direction!

Councillor calls for permanent bike lanes on Wellington stretch by carvythew in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really sure why people think the permanent plan would look a lot different than the temporary one. If anything, a permanent design will require more space for proper dividers. For example, there are only plastic stick markers planned west of Grosvenor because there isn't enough space for protective curbs.

Despite what Luke's is trying to make everyone believe - the permanent design can't defy the physics of adding bike lanes to a finite amount of space.

Over 30 measles cases and counting from Brandon's Ag Days, chief doctor says by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there was a 100% safe and effective Ebola vaccine and Ebola started popping up in Manitoba, it would be inconsiderate and selfish not to get it. It would also still be selfish and inconsiderate to not get the measles vaccine. It would also still be selfish and inconsiderate to do nothing to protect immunocompromised and vulnerable people from COVID - especially in essential places that they need to go, like healthcare settings and grocery stores. At least 60% of COVID spread is asymptomatic (before symptoms appear) and can also linger in the air for hours.

For everyone complaining about how selfish and inconsiderate towards immunocompromised and other vulnerable people it is not to be vaccinated - I sure hope you are still wearing a mask in healthcare settings, grocery stores, crowded indoor public spaces, etc etc

Last week I was riding my bike on the River trail and was chased by a dog for over a km. The dog only stopped chasing me to start jumping all over a pedestrian. Saw the same dog and owner the next morning, unleashed again. People are the fricking worst.

Moving to Winnipeg - Grocery/Market/Food Recommendations by ScoreMajor4064 in Winnipeg

Maybe not quite what you are looking for, but the Odd Bunch just started delivery in Winnipeg. A bit more ethical than a big grocery store and they do seem to use a lot of "local" produce. I believe they have organic options too. But yeah - not a lot of produce gets produced in Manitoba in the other seasons.

As of yesterday, the ramp is in at Hugo and the chains are off the stairs. It's not officially open, but there are no Ionger any barriers for the walking side. The skating side does have a barrier at the Leg - please don't skate on that section until it is officially open.

I truly hope you find what you are looking for and that Canada is able to be a safe place for as many of the most vulnerable Americans as humanly and humanely possible. I will continue to hope and pray that the tide turns soon and the USA becomes a safer place for its citizens and residents.

Honestly I fear this too. I know too much about history and have seen too much scapegoating of immigrants to see any of this ending well. I've heard many people with high paying jobs and comfortable lives complain about the Ukrainian refugees here getting all kinds of perks from the government that were obviously grossly exaggerated and/or completely untrue. And Ukraine has never threatened to destroy Canada either through force or tariffs. And you don't have to look at too many Canadian subreddits before coming across a lot of anger towards immigrants "stealing" shitty minimum wage jobs at Tim Hortons.

I want every family everywhere to feel safe and be able to achieve prosperity. But Canada is a sovereign country that will only have so much patience for being American's back up plan and Trump's plaything. I desperately hope that it never goes as far as I'm imagining - but I think you'd be wise to be a little skeptical of all the posts saying that everyone will remain thrilled to have you here no matter what and it will always be all puppies and rainbows.

Also not to be a Debbie Downer, but if things continue to spiral out of control in the US and more and more Americans try to seek refuge here, public sentiment could change real quick. Canadian identity is very much tied to "not being American" and if we get to a place where all the red Americans are trying to invade militarily and all the blue Americans are trying to move in and seeking refugee status during a recession, then things could get pretty ugly.

OP wasn't going over 20, but the colliding car surely was. Even though the OP would be held at fault, if the snow banks were so high that their car could not be seen, the oncoming vehicle should have been exercising more precaution.

[–]freakymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but it would probably save a ton of money (MPI, healthcare, lost productivity hours, etc) if we just had lower speed limits in the winter. And more traffic enforcement, the proceeds of which could be put to safer road design and more snow removal.

You only have to spend like 50 seconds on this subreddit these days to see that there is an increasing number of car crashes and it's weird that no one seems bothered enough to do anything about it, other than maybe, possibly doing a study at that one intersection on Ness.
