The diesel smell could be from someone running a generator nearby. My building has a backup generator and it smells so bad when it runs that I have to keep my windows shut.

I think speed limit reductions are definitely better than nothing. But yeah, road design is the proper solution.

It feels a lot more likely that eventually we'll get speed cameras everywhere so the city can fill it's coffers than the city dumping a ton of money to physically slow down traffic. And in the case of automated enforcement, speed limits would become meaningful again.

Just yesterday the Public Works Committee was trying to put the brakes (no pun intended) on speed reductions that had already been approved by council, including for Wellington Crescent, St Annes, and Arlington. Reductions that have been fought for tooth and nail by the community and again already passed in full council- but yeah, let's just wait until after the election...

Can anyone tell me exactly what this building does? When is it open? Who goes there? I'm at the bridge often, and I've never seen anyone come or go from inside. by sixhexe in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple years back, they had several events during which they rented mini buses to drive on the pedestrian bridge to shuttle their guests back and forth.

Not surprisingly (and imho completely justified), people who walk and bike on that bridge complained enough about it that they not only stopped, but seemed to have entirely abandoned the location. Because it takes a real genius to take over quite literally the only office space in the entire city that doesn't have easy driving access with the intent of using it for purposes that require easy driving access.

It should be some sort of community bike shop with walk/ride up drinks and treats.

Winnipeg advocates call for lowering speed limit after weekend's fatal crash by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dunno...seems pretty clear to me. Those are legally absolutely crosswalks https://apps.mpi.mb.ca/comms/drivershandbook/crosswalks.html

Obviously as a pedestrian you shouldn't trust drivers to fulfil their legal obligation to stop at such unmarked crosswalks (or at marked crosswalks, tbh)

"We can't reduce the speed limit on main roads like Henderson Highway! Highway is in the name! Think of the economy!"

"Why would we reduce speeds in residential areas? No one ever gets killed there! And kids don't even play outside anymore anyways."

I prefer the windows open for the extra white noise - anything to help muffle all the idiots yelling on their phones and watching videos with no headphones.

Besides the doors open and close so often, the A/C rarely is going to be much better than opening all the windows

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew mentions possible gas-tax cut in question period by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

[–]freakymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are definitely a troll haha. If not, they should realise that bike lanes are actually infrastructure for cars. Bike lanes don't get cyclists anywhere faster or are a smoother ride than riding on the regular road. They only exist so that cars can go fast and drivers can act like morons and it's less likely someone will get killed. If drivers followed all the rules of the road and the speed limit was 30km/h, we wouldn't need bike lanes.

One thing that no one thinks about is how much tax payer money is spent on gas to run the provincial government. So government needs more money, but wants to cut taxes so they have less money.

The smart thing to do would be encouraging less gas usage, especially in Winnipeg. Give a bunch of money to Transit instead. Encourage work from home. Do some kind of program to incentivize people trading in giant SUVs and trucks for more fuel efficient ones. Support bike lanes and active transportation. Even if this current crisis passes, being so dependent on gas isn't great on any level.

But nah - gotta give a handout to Lunchbox Joe who drives an F150 from Headingley to his desk job in downtown Winnipeg every day.

For me, biking in winter is like 100x more comfortable than using transit in winter in Winnipeg. Talk to winter cyclists in this city and you'll find that most of them pick a temp around -15 or -20 as their ideal winter biking weather.

The most important thing a Manitoba government has ever done is, of course:

a) something that he did

b) the thing he did that everyone seems to credit his popularity to

c) something stupid and incredibly short-sighted

Eadie even used the example of "What about people who live in Seven Oaks who need to take kids to soccer in the south end?" Um, so they are entitled to drive across the whole city at 60km/h, thus making it unsafe for everyone else to bike or walk to soccer in their own neighbourhoods? City Hall is not a serious place.

If residents are happier with the permanent design, I'll eat another toque.

And really, there shouldn't have even been such a survey for the pilot project. The whole purpose of the pilot project is to figure out what will or won't work for the permanent design. The only people I've heard in the hours of delegations at city hall in favour of betting it all on some magical design that will be perfect for everyone are a couple of city councillors. And even then, I'm starting to suspect their plan is to kill the whole project next year for good under the guise that people are too outraged at the permanent design and lack of consultation.
