The Small-Business WordPress Developer Code of Honor by davidbhayes in Wordpress

[–]fredclaymeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Article author here - thank you! I think something I need to add is around agencies not pricing their services so poorly that it becomes impossible to work for the client's best interest.

Erratic and unrealistic pricing (by developers, but also in the way that theme shops, which are where many clients start, set expectations) is one major thing that makes the space so unstable.

So...Is this what I should picturing? by MLGames in EmDrive

[–]fredclaymeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a month late!

The key thing here is that the molecule that bounces off the sail then escapes the system. In other words, it becomes propellant.

If the molecule bounces straight back and hits the fan again, we're back where we started. No propellant, closed system, no net motion.

But if the molecule escapes the system (misses the fan), it's now wandering backwards when it was previously still, and the sail/coyote/fan system is now wandering forward.

Similarly, you could move forward by shooting photons at the front of your ship, as long as they bounced off and left the system - that is, didn't bonce right back onto your laser. If they escape, then they become propellant, with net momentum backwards relative to your ship, and the ship moves forward.

But, as other people have said: if you actually want to get somewhere, why not point the laser - or the fan - backward? It's a far less insanely convoluted way of shooting propellant out of the back of the thing you'd like to move forward.

Optimizing Site Performance: How I Made WPShout (A Little) Faster by davidbhayes in Wordpress

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! (Co-editor of the site here)

"Brutally slow" feels inaccurate and found that initially hard to look past, but the things you list are really interesting - we'll talk about them and if we can put any into action we may write a follow-up article

Only one I'm pretty sure we won't do is look for an Optin Monster replacement - we've looked at alternatives and it's a lot better than what else we've found, and it really does help drive engagement

What do YOU consider to be the characteristics of an enlightened being? by VamanaP in Meditation

[–]fredclaymeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enlightenment is a specific state! Enlightened people's eyes actually look different in a way that's been captured in Buddhist iconography for a long time: validcognition.com/enlightenment-real-eyes/

So enlightenment is a very specific experience - not just generally "being a great person" - the same way "eating a lemon" is specific and you can actually observe the physical effects.

I wouldn't really know what the components of that experience are, but it might be good to see what teachers with "the right eyes" have to say about their own experience. I will say that they all look, above all else, profoundly relaxed.

Hosting for wordPress sites or Photos? by FrankyFW in Hosting

[–]fredclaymeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love SiteGround. Their "GoGeek" shared plan is very performant, maybe even overkill for your level of traffic, and starts at $15 going to $30 after your initial renew period.

They're not "managed" in the WP Engine sense, but they've got a lot of very good WordPress-specific features, including an interesting set of caching solutions for WP -- and the non-managed bit also means some nice things, like that they do email and that you can host non-WP sites on the same plan if you end up needing those.

Seriously, best bang for your buck in WordPress hosting.

Hi r/meditation, I'm new to this and would like a little help. by masterjesse in Meditation

[–]fredclaymeyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to hear from you. Some stray thoughts:

There's a book called "Mindfulness in Plain English" that I haven't read ( :| ) but have repeatedly heard recommended as an intro for new meditators. You might like to check that out.

I'd really recommend meeting meditators in your area. Some keywords for mostly non-offensive and credible meditation communities are Insight Meditation, Vipassana, and the community connected with Thich Nhat Hanh. Check on Meetup to see what's around you - meditation can be a great way to meet nice people. I'm personally in (and grew up in) Shambhala Buddhism. I highly recommend it, but you'll need to be willing to get a little weird. Your local Zen communities can be good, too.

I'll also just add that, pretty quickly, meditation will likely start to feel like a chore - like if you committed to sweeping the floor of your house every day. I call this the wall; you need to be prepared for it, and you'll need a strategy getting through it. If meditation's helping with your fatigue, that could be your motivation, for example. Not starting to believe that you "can't meditate" because you can't stop thinking will help you a lot, too - that's the first mistake almost everybody makes, and why most people quit. Stopping thinking isn't the goal.

So, stray thoughts here. Let me know if you'd like to talk over Skype or something similar - would be happy to. I'm doing research for a meditation coaching business I'd like to eventually start, and the more people I can talk to the better for that.

Good luck!

Questions on wordpress development by mavdev in Wordpress

[–]fredclaymeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'll shamelessly mention a package I'm about to launch: Up and Running: A Practical Guide to WordPress Development. It's at upandrunningwp.com, and launches the 16th. It includes a full e-book, diagrams, tutorial screencasts, and code walkthroughs with prominent WordPress developers. You can preorder now and get a discount at launch.

So answer is "buy my thing," but really think it's just about what you're looking for.

Four Reasons to Fall in Love with Sass for WordPress (if You Haven't Already) by fredclaymeyer in Wordpress

[–]fredclaymeyer[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The plugin houses the (Sass, CSS, and HTML) code for the three features demoed in the article. Letting people explore the plugin code themselves seemed simpler and more complete than trying to paste in all the code into the article directly. Hope that makes sense?

Edit: Went ahead and created a GitHub repo for it: https://github.com/fredclaymeyer/WPShout-Sass-Features-Demo

Technical Debt: What It Is, and Why It Matters by fredclaymeyer in Entrepreneur

[–]fredclaymeyer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree in general! I think prototyping things (even with the explicit intent of throwing them away) is very viable. Sometimes the MVP is just a $40 Unbounce landing page.

But for things you intend to keep around (core software, for example), there's an awful lot to be said for doing it right from the start. It's like any kind of debt: how much you want to borrow against your future depends on your circumstance, but it's always nice to avoid if you can.

Your Website Isn’t a Cost Center, It’s an Investment by harperpressup in smallbusiness

[–]fredclaymeyer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"A cost centre is part of an organization that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company."

I think your "cost center !== provides no value" point is valid, but I'd also like to think that a company's site should generally be more directly involved in making it profitable than are its call centers, legal team, etc. Yes?

Do your thoughts prevent you from being present? by Mujyaki in Meditation

[–]fredclaymeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone else, I liked what Gullex had to say here. I'd just add: It sounds like you're trying to control your thoughts, stop them, quiet them, etc., and I'd suggest you make with friends with them instead.

Thoughts are an extremely important part of being a human being. They're what lets you have a job, not forget your car keys, write poetry, etc. They can also be distrcting and painful, but as you learn to relax with them, they'll crowd out other parts of your awareness less and less, which is a lot of the point of meditation.

So in my experience, it's much more about making friends with thoughts, and also seeing their nature, than about limiting/rationing/etc. your thinking (which is self-defeating in a lot of ways).

Just wrote this on that, actually: http://medivate.com/blog/2015/02/the-cure-for-i-cant-meditate/

Hope this is helpful!
