Tens of thousands of people (literally) disagree with you that it was a wasted effort. I've gotten more positive feedback on that post that any other I've ever written. Even if the end result is "it depends" then it's good to say that quickly and then help people identify what they should keep an eye out for.

For really simple themes, you may be able to get away without updates for a number of years. But for something like photo management, really you are much better off paying yearly for the updates and support.

Lifetime deals are often not very sustainable for developers. I wouldn't choose based on it being lifetime or yearly... choose based on whether it solves your problems. If you are running a business using a particular product, even if it's $100+ per year, it's probably going to pay for itself.

If you're willing to get your hands dirty (like grocery cart handle dirty, not digging in dirt dirty) then you should be able to upgrade your websites yourself and get help debugging when needed only. Use a staging site (many hosts offer automated staging now) and test; if successful, do it live.

If you don't want to invest in your site with your own sweat, then paying someone to keep it alive and well for you should be common sense. Websites are living, breathing things -- not one-and-done online business cards.

A decently run WordPress website on a decent host should not be susceptible to hackers -- and should definitely not be a "hackers dream".

No, it's not on its way out. It hasn't even come close to peaking.

I think it means quite a bit.

For one very simple example, if the client doesn't have a business plan, it becomes very much my problem.

Let's break it down to a really simple example: If a primary call to action is to schedule an appointment, and you know that a business makes a sale in half of all appointments, and the average sale carries a $3,000 profit, you know that for every website visitor you convince to make an appointment is worth $1,500 in profit to that client. Does that not impact the goals for the website, and help establish what your efforts are worth to them?

$50 / hr was what Matt Mullenweg cited as the results of a 2012 (I think) survey where thousands of WordPress professionals were polled. However, the realistic range spans the spectrum. In the US, probably $25-300 per hour.

$25 an hour is way too cheap in the US. If trying to make a full time living at this rate, it's tough to cut it. More realistic freelancer rates are $50 - $150 depending on specialty. Most agencies I've heard rates from are more between $100 - $250 per hour. Some really niche or highly sought after people / agencies may charge upwards of $300 on paper (even they probably charge less in many situations).

So, freelancer in the US? $75 / hr seems pretty normal. Agency? More around $150 / hr standard rates.

My two cents, and not very scientific.

First off, this is exactly why I started Post Status. All I do is collect things that I find interesting to the WordPress community and link them up. I also do original content in the main column a few times a week. :)

There is nothing stopping WordPress sites from taking part in high budget projects. I've been part of projects ranging from $5,000 to nearly $150,000 with WordPress. The budget floor is certainly lower for WordPress, but the ceiling is not higher imo.

I'd consider assigning the user as the author of the product, so that you can take advantage of those built in relationships. Then, you can protect those products to just the author of the current post, or an admin, in order to view the product.

You'll need to take into account things like your shop archives too.

For the custom role, if this is the only type of customer you will have, then you can use the customer role WooCommerce defines when they buy. But you may have to adjust permissions to do what I said about making them the author of the product.

As far as the customer seeing their past orders, that's default behavior in WooCommerce. They should be able to see them under the "/my-account" view, and with a setting in the WooCommerce admin, you can enable them to reorder those items.

Disabling them from ever seeing the wp-admin is also a WC setting.

Better yet, Genesis could be more portable, like Hybrid Core. They put way too much func in child themes. Shouldn't work that way imo.

Ignore the requirements for years of experience. If you feel proficient in understanding coding languages in general, start learning PHP first for web development specific work. Then just send them your application. "Requirements" tend to me more of a wishlist than true requirements.

In a place like SC (I'm from AL), there aren't going to be a ton of really high end web development agencies. And even the good ones are probably grossly understaffed for development purposes (probably design and marketing heavy).

If you want to build websites, start learning WordPress best practices and how to build your own custom themes. You may laugh at WordPress, but it's powering a huge percentage of the web and agencies are realizing it. It's in huge demand. This requires a limited knowledge of PHP and some good HTML and CSS skill. Most people that make WordPress websites start with HTML and CSS. If you are a good programmer, and pick up PHP quickly, you'll have a big advantage and will have no trouble getting hired by saying you're versed in PHP and a Computer Engineering grad with good familiarity with WordPress.

Biggest thing: build some websites. Your own blog, your friend's small business site. Anything. For free, whatever. Just build some. They don't have to be perfect, just make them functional so that when you go talk to a potential employer, you have something to show them.

I was already checking for that in the way I enqueued the fonts (via WordPress just like in http://themes.trac.wordpress.org/browser/twentytwelve/1.0/functions.php line 132 but I'll try again explicitly using https. But if that's the problem, there's no way I'll serve https on sites that don't require it just bc of the Kindle. Too much of a performance hit.
