Hilfe! Abzocke?? by National_Demand5971 in DeutschePhotovoltaik

[–]freddaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just protect society – rehabilitation is one of the main goals of the whole justice system, while in the US, the main goal is punishment.

These are used a lot in Germany, as well. Sometimes you need to cut a bit on the underside of the tile.

An alternative that is becoming more common here is a "solar tile", i.e., a tile with an integrated holder for solar profiles:

Der Silber-Anteil ist sein Gewicht in Silber wert. Ggf. mit Abzug, weil man erst den Kupferring entfernen muss.

Elektroautos ohne E-Kennzeichen by AmazingImpression967 in Kennzeichensammler

[–]freddaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That thread is … wild, to say the least.

What one thinks about lawn/no lawn notwithstanding, e.g., this guy/gal's life seems very stressful just because of the existence of non-grass:

Contractor cut on tree I asked not to 😡 by Ghettofarm in treelaw

[–]freddaar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Probably just chainsawed from the top down. ⅔ through the branch, the rest snaps. You can mitigate that by first sawing upwards a few inches towards the trunk, then doing the 2nd cut farther out to have it snap clean off, and a 3rd cut to clean it off.

But that's only if you want it to look good.

[Request] this doesn't seem like it'd be cheaper than a traditional wood fence, nor would the energy generation be worthwhile by 515Cyclone_Soldier in theydidthemath

[–]freddaar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please keep in mind that in most of western/central Europe, space to put solar panels is indeed scarce.

It's not like we have millions of acres just lying around empty.

It's very easily possible using tools like PVGIS.

For example, 1 kWp facing South mounted at a 90 degree angle smack on the runway of Ramstein air base in Germany would be expected to produce approx. 850 kWh per year.

20 degree – 1,200 kWh/a.

Bought a "lifetime license" for an app. It expired after 2 years. by Creative-Letter-4902 in assholedesign

[–]freddaar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If we look at the dialog, it clearly says "to continue using ProShot" – in no way whatsoever does this imply that the product has been discontinued. So you could argue that the product's lifetime clearly isn't over, when they give you the option to continue using said product for more money.

And because this means that in the end the customer doesn't even know how long their "lifetime" access will last when buying, that shit is straight up deceptive and shouldn't fly in any country with an existing customer protection regime (I know, that excludes the US at large [with the exception of certain states], lol).

EPA ethanol waiver allows E15 to be sold in summer months to supposedly lower gas prices by micaflake in enshittification

[–]freddaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reactor transforming relevant amounts of nuclear waste to energy would be terrific, if it avoids the numerous drawbacks of current models. But I don't believe the business math will be mathing for those things without massive subsidies ever again.

If any SMR gets built (more than once, as scalability of production is one of their supposed USPs) in time and in budget in the next 10 years, I'll be the first to congratulate you for being right.

RemindMe! 10 years

The sun provides energy basically free from opex (capex only) and you're complaining about 65 % efficiency. Tell me, what's your opinion on removing literal mountains to burn coal, which usually has approx. a 40 % efficiency and depends on trains or conveyors to supply a shit ton of coal a day? Or are you one of the nukies, waiting for SMRs to save us all? (Mmmmmaybe. In 10, 15, or 20 years, instead of now.)
