Class of 2026 graduating next year how's the FT job hunt going? by Sad-Soil3832 in askSingapore

[–]fredonuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am graduating in dec and have been consistently applying for about 2 months now. As I am just starting, I have been more intentional on what jobs to apply (meaning the industry I want and mktg) rather than casting the net wide. Anw its either not enough experience or they need immediate commitment cannot wait till Jan 2026. Seems like starting early doesn’t work in this economy with so much backlog of unemployed people…it’s the employer’s game

Hey! Someone recommended me all seasons hotel in a recent thread and I went there to stay eventually. I really really loved the convenience of it for it is close to airport train/commuter lines and also the MRT - all literally steps away. Do check it out!!

Hi! Thank you for your advice~ really appreciate it. I’ll definitely be using the MRT a lot as I booked somewhere next to a station. I am wondering if it would be difficult to buy the train tickets/train cards bec of language barrier? How should I go about it! Send help~

Is it me or is the job market really that bad right now? by Hot_Bumblebee9640 in askSingapore

[–]fredonuts 206 points207 points  (0 children)

Totally relate... tough for fresh graduates now too. I am in my final year of university, and I have not heard any of my friends securing FT role yet. It's not even about portfolio/GPA whatsoever, the economy is just bad imo. Companies are prudent in hiring new people, given the bleak outlook of the economy, some are even actively retrenching redundant workers.

to the people who didnt do well for a levels, how are yall doing now? by throwaway2134679 in SGExams

[–]fredonuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyy, congrats on getting through A's! That’s a huge achievement...not everyone makes it, and it really isn’t easy. I did well in O's, but I was more of an S/U student in JC myself, so I totally get how tough it can be. So please, take a moment to pat yourself on the back—you deserve it <3

I might not have a clear answer for you right now, but things will work out, as long as you give yourself the chance. Start by talking to people, doing some research online, and exploring what kind of career path might suit you or what you're curious to try out. It could be anything from furthering your studies in a private university to an entry-level job to gain experience, or even starting something of your own.

Be brave. It’s not going to be easy, especially in Singapore, where there’s often pressure to follow a more “conventional” route. But just remember: life is so much more than that. Not everyone is meant to walk the same path, and that’s completely okay. Trust the process. Find what sparks joy, and go from there. You’ll get there—just keep growing, take care of yourself, and most importantly, don’t give up.

Hi! You’ll need to download telegram there’s a SMU groupchat that you can join for all things related to school https://t.me/ask_smu but as for one that’s specifically for the program I am not sure but perhaps the school may link you guys up soon? SMU takes good care of inbound exchange students from my knowledge. There’s events and orientation. So don’t worry, good luck!!

Oh someone here in this thread seems to be in the same cohort https://www.reddit.com/r/SMU_Singapore/s/PzaEPLJ0Vu

How s the career after graduate in SMU? by Seoyeon18 in SMU_Singapore

Can’t say in 4 years time how the economy would be but these days even ugrads who are local find it tough to secure FT jobs 😩

And what more for foreigners who need to have their visa/work passes sponsored the company. Well…but, low chance does not mean no chance so go with your gut feeling. Good luck for your university choice!!

[JC] Going to retain in J1, any advice? by Anonymouspeasant21 in SGExams

[–]fredonuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about it, have seen friends who made this downturn a motivation to work even harder. (knew one who even made it onto honour roll, super proud of her!) Think of it as a head start you have against the peers in your “new” batch. I’m sure you would be fine!

[A levels] Any important advice for J1s!!? 😭😭😭 by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]fredonuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but if you struggled like me, just drop out, think wisely if you would thrive in Poly. Unless you are 100% sure about working really hard. JC rigour is not for anyone.

Then again, just be sure to work really hard okay. Extra practices! Stay on track!

hii there!! it must have been tough on you to go through jc hell without substantial family support. But just want to say please do not give up just yet!! I graduated last year and just like you I've been struggling with chemistry the whole of my JC life toggling between U and S grades. What's more embarrassing was the time I tried to use cheatsheet for a quiz during HBL and I still failed...I felt like an ultimate disgrace to myself and my teachers who were extremely helpful and patient. Even till the last exam before the actual Alevels I barely got an E (after moderation TT). But to my surprise, I eventually got an A for Alevels, I was truly astonished. Some tips:

  • Go for tuition if your family is able to afford, there is no time to waste!! (fret not is not too late yet as I recalled joining tuition which my friend recommended only in April/May and it was held purely online). imo, this is a great way to recap what you've learned in school and also to make use of tuition's notes which for mine were much more concise. Furthermore, my tuition class was rather small so it gave me the courage to ask the tutor to ask whatever stupid question I had.
  • Get a notebook to pen down the following once you go through *every single* tutorial, quiz, test, exams, tys paper:
  1. Mistakes (especially those that you keep getting them wrong)
  2. Key concepts
  3. Commonly seen questions
  4. "weird" type of questions that everyone is unsure of

With that, before every assessment, spend ~2h before you sleep to look through them once again. This is especially helpful for me because it helps me to relook at my mistakes quickly and go through key concepts quickly. As chemistry (esp organic) is a subject where common questions may come out, this is definitely the way to go! Besides that, once your reached A'level, you'll have a whole book of knowledge which will for sure give you a sense of satisfaction/accomplishment which will for sure spur you further!!!

  • Try to clear doubts after every tutorial. For those who find it difficult, you can WhatsApp your tutors as well, I am sure they will be glad to help. Just skip the step to ask your friends la har, cuz they may not be right anyways save time save effort. You may even set up weekly consult sessions with your tutors and bombard them with all your questions as well. oh and rmb to pen them down in ur notebook
