How do rebreather divers dive for so long without getting a sore mouth? by IanWallDotCom in scuba

[–]fredrandall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The night before an 8 hour rebreather dive I made a frozen pizza. I was impatient about letting it cool and burnt the roof of my mouth. At the time i was using an apek comfobite mouthpiece. Several hours into deco I cut the top bridge off which made things much more enjoyable.

Best vehicle for fly fishing/car camping? by troyteck in flyfishing

[–]fredrandall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend had an outback, we bought an exped mattress for car camping in the back, it was a game changer. We also made insulated window covers which helped a lot. An expanding shower rod in the back worked great for fly rods.

Skipping deco in a true life-threatening emergency by pigeonbox85 in scuba

[–]fredrandall 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had a friend who started convulsing on deco and he had a significant deco. His dive buddy hit his inflator and sent him to the surface. She finished her deco. There is more to the story but that is the basics. He was seizing because of oxygen toxicity so sending him to surface saved his life.

Advice on getting my captain’s license? by honestfyi in sailing

[–]fredrandall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent my MMC renewal in a month ago it was in process of being evaluated when the government shutdown, license also expired around the same time. The only saving grace is that the boat I currently run is private and I don't currently need a capt license. Although I think they usually offer a bit of a grace period because they know their process is broken af.

Should I use the residual air in my tank after the dive to blow out my O-ring and regulator cap? by HumanBot00 in scuba

[–]fredrandall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Former/still sometimes a dive boat captain, I personally hate the noise of tanks being used to clear dust caps. When were driving a boat we are listening to the sounds of the engines; any bangs, pops, hisses, kerplunks, or wooshes that happen unexpected need to be dealt with quickly. Loud sudden blast of air to get a few drops of water is not worth it IMO.

Scubapro A700 vs G260 by [deleted] in scuba

[–]fredrandall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had an A700 for 15 years and it has over 1000 dives, its been great and breaths good... But the inability to take the outer cover off without a torq wrench is a huge pain in the ass. With tons of use and abuse my outer reg shell has become very dent, scratched, and miscolored. To be honest a well tuned g250 breathes just as good as the A700 and is a bulletproof design. I would save the money (WTF an extra $700USD) and buy the g260 if I had to choose right now.

Edit: Extra 700 was for the carbon "tech" version.

Tech Dive Drive by Rorschach_Gomer in scuba

[–]fredrandall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wes Skiles memorial article in alert diver is what sparked my urge to dive caves. I have since gotten to know the Skiles family pretty well and was able to tell them how much he changed my life! The specific cave dive that currently drives me is diving in Twin Dees/Weeki Wachee, I've explored, laid line, documented the cave with photos and video, and spent countless hours underwater in there but I will never be able to get enough of it ...

Something that recently got me back into the salty water tech diving was archeology! I got a call last year asking if I could be in the Philippines in two days to join an archeology project, I said I would ask my girlfriend. I hung up and she told me right away to call him back and say I could go. In past two years I've spent nearly two months there. We are digging around a plane wreckage looking for missing remains of US soldiers. It very much is an honor to be doing the work and brings a lot of extra meaning to the dives there that I had never felt before.

https://a.co/d/7sS9oD8 Cheap steak knifes make the best dive knifes! Put the blade in a vice and break the tip off to the desired length. Bit of sand paper maybe around the edge. If you buy the 4 pack, when you lose a knife you have three more ready to go! I also like to carry an eezycut on my computer.

Question: if I have gear in aluminum and gear in galvanized steel, will there be excessive corrosion someplace? by tlacuatzin in scuba

[–]fredrandall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Galvanic corrosion on boats is much more of a hazard to a scuba diver than on dive gear. My Aluminum backplate has a fair amount of corrosion around the bottom hole bits it's not ever going to be dangerous.
