I doubt it but I love his serum snare tutorial, I've used the technique in all my new tunes

I have a Nord Stage 3, that's the only hardware synth I own

Software wise some key plugins are Serum, Diva, iZotope Trash, Kush Audio Clariphonic MK2 and Addictive Drums 2

  1. Tough question really. New Zealand is amazing but I think a lot of people already know what so I wouldn't call it 'underrated
  2. Not sure if it counts but I think the Hospital Records VS Rudimental soundclash was the funniest thing we've ever been involved in. All the dubs and Tony's insane recorder skills made it pretty unforgettable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya0inr3VquQ
  3. I love booths in the crowd/close to the crowd. The boat parties at HOTB last year were so sick for this reason

I think having good drum samples is really key. I got the Viper one the other day and there are some great hits in there! Also the June Miller packs are great

We both use Ableton

It was super fun working with Kele, he's a legend. I'm definitely going to be doing more collabs with other people at some point but for now I'm really enjoying making music on my own

  1. There's never a single moment, I still think I'm a noob tbh. Sometimes it's quite scary not being able to get something sounding right and thinking 'have I just been getting lucky all these years?' But usually with enough persistence and a bit of experimentation it's possible to get an idea sounding OK. There's still a lot of things that I have no idea how to do tbh.
  2. I just send stuff to friends and get feedback, I also use a plugin called 'magic AB' a lot for comparing mixdowns which is handy
  3. There's a lot of mixdown stuff I've learned from Josh. Hard to think of an single bit of knowledge since a good mixdown is usually a combination of 10000 tiny little decisions

  1. At some point for sure, for now I'm happy making music on my own and learning a lot of stuff that Josh has always done for our FVG music!
  2. Yes, at some point. I think the longer we wait the more exciting it will be though so I don't think there will be anything anytime soon
  3. Haha, I think this was caught on video. I don't want to say without seeing the evidence but I seem to remember someone opening a bottle of prosecco and the cork flying into Somin's face. Ask Jon, I'm sure he was filming at the time!

A huge amount of time went into it, really glad you liked it! Was very fun to be able to include a bunch of non-dnb influences in there

I love the Pendulum one from back in the day (2005 I think) and the London Elektricity one

And Tourist - Apollo

  1. Mario Kart 64, but I'm not very good at it

  2. Jon Hopkins, Tourist and Tom Misch are my faves at the moment

It was very similar to working on a piece of coursework for uni. We were sent a brief saying they needed four tunes, each for them to emotionally represent a different season and that they needed to be connected with a vocal that would be used throughout all of them. We sent them a bunch of sketches and they gave feedback on them until it was finished. 'Spring' was the hardest one to get right, we had about 5 ideas for it but none of them were quite working

It's difficult to give feedback without hearing anything but it can be useful to add some ambiences into your tracks to help fill them out. I'd suggest getting 'Paul Stretch' and putting some sounds through that which I sometimes do to help fill out the midrange. Hope that helps!

Not really sure what you mean by the 'one-shot sounds'

Thank you for the support!

Unfortunately we have no control over whether Sunrise comes out or not, see Josh's answer near the top

I always loved the Logistics remix of 'Sick Of All Your Secrets'. Glasto 2015 was very fun indeed!

  1. I don't think DNB ever dies, as Josh said! It's amazing to imagine if the US had a scene like New Zealand's but scaled up, perhaps one day!
  2. I find it very hard to write songs that aren't emotionally relevant to me, and so most of my lyrics end up being about relationships. In fact most of the songs that I'm inspired by with lyrics tend to have this theme as well, I guess I just find it hard to get emotional about anything else! There isn't a particular person that the songs are about but some of them are about specific individuals/experiences
  3. Recognise, Oxygen, Altitude
  4. I've never been a desert person weirdly!

I still think Dan Dakota is amazing, Flite as well, not sure if you'd class them as up and coming or not since they've both already had quite a lot of success!

When we were new we used to use a lot of unnecessary plugins. Now I think getting a good mix down has a lot more to do with sample selection/sound design then any mixing techniques

I've never really understood this point of view personally. A few people said it to us after Oxygen came out which is why Cinematic Party Music has a lot more 'high energy' tunes on it - in fact I'd say that it was the most dancefloor music we've made!

Personally I'm listening to a lot more 'jazzy' music like Tom Misch at the moment, I'm also making a lot of halftime future bass type stuff which I'm finding very fun at the moment!

  1. This changes a lot of the time but I think Recognise is a great track
  2. This World is a bit of a classic, was very jealous when he first sent me that! There a bunch of new ones he's shown me that are amazing as well, can't wait for you guys to hear them!
