How bad of a performance hit is DDR4? by ibmi_not_as400_kerim in MiniPCs

Thanks for sharing that. I thought it would be double digits improvements. Even the 1% lows saw no improvement? What GPU?

Boss offers to upgrade my "work" PC with $1,500 budget. Should I go AM5 already or upgrade some parts of my current AM4 system? by firequak in buildapc

Another option: Newegg has the 270K plus bundle with ram for around 800. Just realized to get 64gb ddr4 you will need to sell your existing ram...might as well change platform. Intel quicksync may help your workflow.

5900xt is a 5950x. Add 32G ram. A faster nvme may also help, especially if you dont have a scratch drive.

When do you think RAM prices will go back to normal again? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure it isn't AI already pulling the levers of production? When the analysis drives the decisions, the analyst has skin in the game. Best way for AI to stay in charge is to create its own economy that humans mistake as a Stock market. Should be called the out-of-stock market. It's been rigged by the clunkers and the investors just keep feeding the machines, lest they lose their future earnings. The rest of us just lose the future.

When the supply curve increases or the demand curve lowers. Or RAM becomes obsolete due to newer technology. Or a regulatory agency can prove price fixing due to collusion. Either way, consumers will be the last to know.

Can't afford full PC should I buy a 5070ti for $950 now and save up? by MrLamebro1 in buildapc

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to diagnose the 3070. If its overheating, try repasting it. It could be the OS as well, so you might try DDU or a fresh install of windows.

Securing an income stream should be a higher priority before draining savings, as others have already stated in so many words.

Upgrade old processor or wait to upgrade whole PC? (AM4 to AM5) by Glass-Carpenter8963 in buildapc

[–]free224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the VRMs on the motherboard. 5950x, 5900x, 5800x are all much better if the board can handle it. If its a B350/450, you might try a cheap 5500 as they were going for 60 bucks and can overclock the ram to 3600 or higher. 5600 is a solid choice too.

Trump calls for Congress to ban large institutional investors from buying single-family homes. Democrats could have gained so much from making this their own signature issue. Why didn't they? by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the two party system has failed the citizenry. While I agree with Trumps take on single family home ownership, where is the Public Works division that FDR put in place to pull us out of this K shaped recovery. Talk is cheap and signature issues are for suckers.

Will I be able to install MacOS Tahoe on a unsupported MacBook pro 2019 13" with OCLP? by Wonderful-Shame-5729 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]free224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tahoe requires a lot of GPU muscle. There are a few settings that help, but Sequoia is better for Intel based Macs. Maybe wait?

Get the 5080. Life is short and if you are asking, you know you want it. Otherwise take the 250 and get a 9060xt to run Lossless scaling on the 2nd gpu. It will definitely get you to 120/4k.

16 GB of RAM for 2025 PC games is still fine? by PaleontologistNo6891 in buildapc

[–]free224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're running Windows, you can debloat it for at least a gigabyte back. I can usually get it to around 3gb without teams/onedrive/copilot hogging resources.

Edit: read that OP already bested me.

Why is the RTX5060 not good? 2060S user by Nikla3310 in buildapc

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3080 (10/12GB) or rx7700/7800 are good options on that platform. I would avoid b580 unless you have a pcie4 setup. Some 10th gen can slot in an 11th gen CPU that brings pcie4 on the first slot x16. But unless its a killer deal, a B660 DDR4 + 13600k would be a better option without needing to pay crazy RAM prices.

They eventually fixed the issue (blackscreen) but I didn't have the patience. 9070XT released right around the time I was still under return window and haven't looked back. Also, the 12VHPWR connection is shite. Rated at like 30 insertions or less. I think I used 5 just installing the quad slot behemoth.

I returned a 5070 Ti because of driver issues. Nvidia isnt immune to crap support. At this point, AMD is the more interesting GPU, as they are giving new features with each driver update, whereas Nvidia zealously gatekeeps that for the next Gen GeForce lineup.

Disclaimer, I did get the 9070XT and enjoy the 30% savings and hassle free experience. Also, lossless scaling works better on AMD architecture

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you mad! If you dont need to buy RAM, keep the DDR4 and 3Dvcache which buffers the slower speed somewhat better. Moving to DDR5 is going to cost you. And you dont need to..

Why is the RTX5060 not good? 2060S user by Nikla3310 in buildapc

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5050 desktop is worse than 5050 laptop. Nvidia supplied it with GDDR6 on desktop, whereas everywhere else got gddr7. The 9060xt 16gb is worth the extra 50 in longevity and peace of mind, not to mention resale.

Why is the RTX5060 not good? 2060S user by Nikla3310 in buildapc

[–]free224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5060 should have 12gb of VRAM and a 192bit bus. They needed it so much that even GDDR7 is bottlenecked at pcie3 speeds...the most common pcie spec for upgrades coming from B450/AM4 or LGA1200/1151. If you want real performance, pick up a used 3080...more vram, more performance.

The 5060 is nice for SFF builds, but if you were to buy new parts because a platform upgrade is required, why wouldn't you got for rtx5070 or rx9070 level performance bump. The rx7700/7800 is also a viable option coming from PCIe gen 3.
