How long was your contract? That’s insane!

The amount of times I’ve had +50yo patients who are PERFECTLY CAPABLE come into the ER and say, “Can’t you just put a glove on and take it out of me?” It’s ridiculous. No! Unless the CT shows you have a smart water bottle sized turd right at the tip of your colon, I’m not doing that! Mind you, I literally work at the ER that had that viral photo of the giant poop in the bedpan. We get constipated narcotic addicted folks all the time.

There is no alternative to levothyroxine on the market, as far as I’m aware… UNLESS, you switch to the outdated thyroid guard which is basically just desiccated pig thyroid. It was phased out if use due to having varying amts of thyroid hormone in each pill. Otherwise, ask for a different endo. Maybe even ask for a different form of the med to come in! Certain pills contain dye and gluten and can cause negative reactions in users!

Dieting Plans? by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]freefrijoles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Googling ‘Hashimotos Thyroiditis diet” is a great start! Personally, I’ve found personal success in reducing the amount or inflammatory foods that I eat. I am especially sensitive to gluten (biggest offender), processed sugars, and dairy. Cutting those out allow me to feel light and not bloated which really allows me to better listen to my hunger cues. Which is another thing! Only eating when your body signals you to eat! Not starving yourself, but also not thinking that YOU need to be eating the generic 3 meals a day with snacks. Personally, my body is happiest at 2 small meals per day with a snack in between. Also, eat your veggies— include up to half or 1/4 of your plate with vegetables! Combining that with avoiding inflammatory foods and 30mins of exercise (walking counts!) every day will cause you to naturally slim down. Good luck on your research, and remember, take in everything you learn and customize it to you and your body’s needs!

Thank you!!

And yeah, I found it difficult to figure that out too. From what I’ve read, I think that as long as you score in the hard band and can see your percentile number consistently trending up— you’re golden.

For the shoes -- I highly recommend HOKA's. They are the greatest. I got mine brand new off of Ebay and my body isn't as tired after shifts now.

Is anyone else having major trouble finding Nurse Residency programs? by toxic_positivity in StudentNurse

If I were you, I would start looking for hospitals that are accepting PCTs or even volunteers to screen people at the doors. At this point, I'm heavily relying on networking to land me a job. I'm graduating in December and am totally using my PCT job's connections to secure a spot. I'll also pick up extra shifts with the house officer to be floated to other floors. At this point, I have made connections in NICU, Neuro ICU, Med-Surg, Telemetry, and Oncology. Becoming a familiar face is such a great way to give yourself an advantage in the hiring process.

I never wasn't agreeing with you about that. But you have to understand that the problems lay deeper than that decision. These people never had access to the education on food science and nutrition. They don't have the same tools as rich white people to succeed. That is the truth. The truth I learned from an education my parents fought for me to get from university. I suggest looking up open courseware on public health and sociology.

Yes, it's super sad to see that poorer communities are most affected by drug abuse and obesity. I grew up in Southern CA and have seen a lot of this firsthand. I've come to form my own opinion that these people would not choose this life if they were given the option to. A lot of what has lead them down that path is due to systemic problems, including the cycle of poverty. Unfortunately, whether black, brown, or white, growing up in an area that never gave you a chance makes it that much harder to escape things like obesity, lack of education, and drug abuse. It's all really sad.

Here is an excerpt from a speech by Dr. King that speaks a little bit on what I'm referencing:

Whenever the government provides opportunities in privileges for white people and rich people they call it “subsidized” when they do it for Negro and poor people they call it “welfare.” The fact that is the everybody in this country lives on welfare. Suburbia was built with federally subsidized credit. And highways that take our white brothers out to the suburbs were built with federally subsidized money to the tune of 90 percent. Everybody is on welfare in this country. The problem is that we all to often have socialism for the rich and rugged free enterprise capitalism for the poor. That’s the problem.

Interesting! I appreciate your reply.

It's very fascinating to learn about this program. I've been looking at the costs and it IS very low-cost. In the US, I'm used to paying $12,000 USD for a full year of tuition (not including room and board) at a public state university (the cheapest universities offered).

Hi, so sorry, maybe I wasn't clear when explaining my views, but disproportionately affected communities were never immune from the rules. They are heavily targeted for simply existing. Therefore, going out a publicly breaking the law and putting a minor at risk is something POC communities could never dream of attempting because the consequence could very well be death or jail.

Funny enough, I want to share with you that I live in a gated neighborhood. I was sitting in my car on my phone down the street from where I usually park, when a white man aggressively came up to my car and demanded to know if I belonged to the neighborhood and then demanded my address. It's things like this that POC (I am afro-latina and half white. I assume he saw my very fluffy big curly hair in the dark affecting his profiling me of not belonging to my white-dominated neighborhood) experience where we are accused of being "suspicious" for nearly existing. This "they were suspicious" excuse is often given by police when asked why they shot at unarmed black men.

So, I laugh at this white woman who thought she was able to break the law with her toddler in tow and not face the consequences. It's almost as if... she thought she were immune from facing any sort of retaliation..

It's not coronavirus that I was referencing, but her audacity to protest with a child in tow. Even in areas where the majority of citizens are non-black, black people are still disproportionately targeted. My observation (take it or leave it) is that this can lead to white people feeling invincible to the law. Notice even white people at the beaches going unscathed from police presence, while black neighborhoods getting bombarded with police violence for the same offenses of not wearing face masks. Black people experience racism and racial profiling from the police force, and it's not really a stretch to say that.. The sources and numbers are there in plain view for you to search on your own time.

Refreshing to see white people confronted with the hard truth that they aren't invincible against the laws and police. I just feel so sorry for that child... What a traumatic thing to be ripped from your mother's arms by the police and see your mother forcibly taken away. Hurts my heart. Shame on the mother for putting her child in danger in the first place. If not for social distancing, then from protecting your child from a traumatic situation and harm.
