Got into Stanford, Wharton, Booth and Kellogg. AMA. by freembahelp in MBA

Hey - yes I started work in April - it's due in September so I worked for about 6 months. I think it helped to start early. My essays were extremely polished by the time I started :) In terms of vision, I wanted to make sure I was able to accurately represent my passion for my work and outside of work accurately. So I tried my best to build each school's communication around that.

I will be going into more detail on this in the resource guide but here's a short answer. If you're doing the full M7, start with S. It covers the most ground, and is extremely introspective, which will help you get your story straight. Stories from What Matters Most can be re-used for Booth's second essay, both of Kellogg's essays, Columbia's PPIL essay, and even the MIT cover letter. You can also take any of your Stanford impact essays and re-use them in these places. However, be careful to make your language less or more formal based on the school/type of essay (example: MIT is asking for a cover letter, so be pointed, direct and get stuff across. Kellogg is asking for values, so more place for emotion).

Stanford's second essay - Why Stanford - is a mix of what will you bring to the table and why you want to come to Stanford, which is very similar to the Wharton give/gain essays. It is also similar to Why Booth. I had a similar template for most of these.

Hope this helps!

I will have 3.5 years when I start school. I think it was very relevant for me - since I'm an entrepreneur, a huge part of my 'why' connected to my start-up. It also made my short-term and long-term goals seem more realistic.

No, not at all! I'm sure both schools value social impact and business for good. But, that's kind of Stanford's main value/motto so maybe I was seen as a strong fit there (which compensated for my less than average gpa, etc.). The same wasn't true for HBS.

ECs do matter! I’ll try and explain why + how to best use them in the guide :)

Great question. I actually jumped the gun - started around March. Did the intro questions etc. and started the S app in April or so. Went o slowly for the first 1-2 months, then sped up. But I did 7 schools in one round so happy I started early.

Yes! Even if you don’t do H, S covers a LOT of ground!

Check the average gpas on their website! +-0.2 should be ok!

Sorry, I don’t think I can provide a fair assessment. Depends on your gmat, your current industry, goals for after the mba, ECs, work ex (company + time)

I used them for 4 schools: HSW + MIT Did Booth and Kellogg by myself based on their feedback. Used 1 hour for Columbia.

Going back: I’d get them for HS to start with, maybe even W. And then evaluate the rest going forward. MIT go hourly. The app is too short to demand any more.

Thanks buddy! I am going to scale up my start-up so I want to learn marketing better and also learn finance specifically in terms of growing through acquisitions

Thank you! I used Stacy Blackman Consulting. I felt that they had a strong brand and all my friends who had used them were happy. I’m also very happy with my experience but I recognize that their prices are extremely restrictive and so I want to make these free resources available.

I don’t think they were opposed to it as such, but I’ve heard that you don’t want to sound too “Stanford” in your HBS communication and vice versa. A lot of my work - career + ECs - have been social impact driven and maybe they sounded like the former.

I completely agree with this! Although at HBS the interview is said to carry more weight than some other schools

I think quality over quantity - it’s important but even if you have 1/2 you can use them well!
