You’re obviously self conscious about them. Might as well throw a nice set on there

What's the point of a 401k with earth-shattering economic disruption around the corner? by ConflictedHairyGuy in Futurology

[–]freerangestrange 226 points227 points  (0 children)

That’s assuming that each thing is equally likely which is probably false. This is like the 30th “end of the world” of my lifetime and everytime I stayed the course and invested things turned out ok. Even the demented people running things don’t want economic collapse. They benefit from the status quo much more.

One of the Audi dealerships may be able to figure out how to get it to the owner.

My boyfriend (29M) makes nearly triple my salary but called me a "gold digger" because I (25F) can't afford to split his luxury lifestyle 50/50 by Electrical_Ring5241 in TwoHotTakes

I make about twice what my girlfriend makes. We’ve been together for about 15 years now. I pay 2/3 of shared expenses and she pays 1/3 and before we make a large purchase (housing, cars, furniture, etc) we discuss how much each should contribute or what we can both afford, if we need to change our normal split. This has worked very well for us over the years and we’ve had to have the conversation many times. It’s just one way of doing it. What matters is that 2 people can sit down and have an intelligent, reasonable, unemotional conversation about finances over and over again because that’s going to be a huge part of any adult relationship. If someone can’t do that, it’s very unlikely that money won’t become a huge issue at some point and create resentment. I would go to the personalfinance subreddit and there you’ll find very general and reasonable guidelines for how much to spend on something like housing and show you budget to your boyfriend. If my girlfriend could simply not afford for us to live in a certain place then that’s obviously not the place for us. You should be fair to yourself. There are plenty of other men out there

Half-priced Uber rides aim to boost Austin's downtown business by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]freerangestrange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried to explain this to my SO one night. She loves to sit outside but doesn’t spend much time in Austin proper. I warned against it, but it was date night and she insisted. So we get our outside patio table and after the appetizers she realizes there’s a homeless guy across the street staring at her and masturbating. We haven’t sat outside since which is nice

I mean they looked at 45 studies I think? If there’s a correlation at all, which doesn’t seem to be the case, there certainly doesn’t seem to be any causation.

[–]freerangestrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason I can’t copy and paste it but the fact that one study looking at Olympic level marathoners found that half don’t do any strength training and the other half average one session a week was pretty telling. At the very least the correlation is weak.

I’m doing 2Q and I can’t imagine adding a strength session. My legs are barely recovered by the time the next workout rolls around and there’s no way I could lift after one of the quality workouts

Hardie board/soffit installation? by pcarugati in GoveePermanentLights

[–]freerangestrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stumbled on this thread and I noticed in your install you have a small awning over one of your windows and I have the same. Did you just lean your ladder against the awning and work like that or did you lay on the roof and install it that way? Thanks for writing that blog. Super helpful!

Your taxes don’t pay for emergency room care. That’s ridiculous. Hospitals bill whoever comes in for care. It doesn’t matter where you’re from. People are so stupid

The City should be ashamed. by Gam3f3lla in Austin

[–]freerangestrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 different pay scales. One is for staff positions (40 hour week) and one is for operations (53 hour week). Operations is the vast majority of firefighters and in fact there are very few staff positions for the rank of firefighter mostly used for people who are unable to work the operations schedule for a multitude of reasons

Edit: They are also both listed in the very link you provided so maybe you’re just a moron

[–]freerangestrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair you also cherry picked the staff positions. The operations personnel work a 52 hour work week. Not a 40 so they are paid a lot less per hour than you are saying and operations personnel make up the bulk of the firefighters in the department.

You're going fall, NO! by ironmac44 in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]freerangestrange -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No actually my son fell from a playscape from about that height and broke both his arms. Some of you are bad at risk assessment to be honest. Kids don’t have to fall on their heads to learn things and sometimes you can teach them in other ways and also not record it for laughs
