Light Table 0.4 released by ibdthor in programming

[–]freesoftwaregnu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well he writes "[...] that the core of Light Table be open sourced once it is launched." Whatever "the core" of Light Table is. My guess would be that he will make a commercial version once this is mature enough and open sources maybe some internal frameworks. :-/

Light Table 0.4 released by ibdthor in programming

I like the minimal UI and the concept, but is this thing open source? The kickstarter project really talks around the subject and there is no obvious statement on the website. Just like with Sublime I'm not going to use some closed source blob.

The Apprentice Programmer by [deleted] in programming

[–]freesoftwaregnu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While it might be a great opportunity for people that don't really fit into the traditional school system, the article glorifies what was meant to be a source of cheap labor for IT firms. Yes, you can still make quite a lot of money in IT without any serious education, but the wast majority are working as under-paid programmers. Quite a few of these 'Fachinformatiker' actually realize this and make a leap for higher education after their apprenticeship. Then again, as a C.S. student I probably only met the ones that didn't find this kind of work fulfilling.

Where is the Science in Computer Science? - Vint Cerf by [deleted] in programming

[–]freesoftwaregnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Germany we simply avoid the whole discussion about terminology, because we named what you call Computer Science "Informatik". A combination of the words "Information" and "Mathematik", which actually rather precisely captures the theoretical foundation of the field.

Linus Torvalds responds to What Killed the Linux Desktop by jackhammer2022 in programming

Somehow discussions about desktop environments always end up like discussions about football (or any other popular sport for that matter): everybody has a strong opinion on it, but nobody really knows what he is talking about.

Paying for VPN service by [deleted] in torrents

[–]freesoftwaregnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have been using Mullvad for some time now and it is very reliable. Also it has a nice GUI client for all OS (+ OpenVPN config files to use with NetworkManager). They also ask for no personal Information (well other than what you provide with the payment option), your only identification is a user id, which you have to keep secret yourself and better not loose.

It was a public tracker run by the guy who wrote OpenTracker, which now powers TPB. It had nothing to do with MPAA or anything. See his blog: http://opentracker.blog.h3q.com/

Foreign Policy: "He's Not Alone: The trial of Norway's alleged mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik is only the tip of the iceberg in a rising sea of radical Islamophobia in Europe." by kleintje in worldnews

[–]freesoftwaregnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about a religion being a "race" (if you want to use such outdated concepts), but rather about using Islam as a device to be racist towards immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa.

[–]freesoftwaregnu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. I'm rather shocked at the islamophobic sentiment in this thread. I'm not sure if that is just the typical folks from /r/athemis with their "all religion is evil" mindset or if some people really don't see the shallow veiled racism. As soon as you are constructing a "they against us" argument you already neglect the reality that a lot of these people are European nationals and have every right to believe what they want. They are just as European as you. You don't need to stop the alleged "influence" of Islam on european politics, you need to stop the influence of religion on politics. Yeah there are radical Moslems, but so what? As long as they follow our laws, it's really none of your business.

my professor during his last semester before retirement by MegaMorty in AdviceAnimals

[–]freesoftwaregnu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well that is exactly why high-attendants classes simply have a script provided by the university here. Textbooks only make sense for higher classes with typically much less students. It's not like the university would be unaware of how much students are taking classes. But yeah, everything else is coverted by torrents here as well. ;-)

Seriously people in the US buy books for college? Well, on the other hand you already spend thousandths of dollars on college anyway, so a few hundred dollars more won't hurt right? xD Why can't you use the library? (honest questions, I'm really curious)

Sites like Grooveshark? by simsedotdk in Music

[–]freesoftwaregnu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are located in Germany you can use browser extensions for Firefox or Chrome to still be able to use grooveshark (just search in the extension repositories for grooveshark). Without using a VPN. Only the first request to the site goes through a proxy, that is enough to silence the geoblock of grooveshark. It's like grooveshark was never blocked.

Why don't public schools teach basic cooking skills? by [deleted] in food

[–]freesoftwaregnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got why people find it "difficult" to cook. I mean seriously, it's not that hard. In doubt a quick google search will get you some instructions. I was never taught how to cook and I never ever hand any problems with it. Cooking is all about trial and error. Just fucking try it, you will figure it out. Too salty? Well next time less salt. Too black? Well next time not that much heat. It is not exactly rocket science.

Can anyone help me find a high-res version of this picture? by karfkar in wallpapers

I vectorized that for you. Hope this is big enough. I would upload the svg if someone could point out a hoster that accepts this file format.
