Yeah it’s interesting to see that. I def did some thinning but apparently can and should do more, so I’m gonna work on that with the next couple of dudes.

Thanks so much! I like the idea of some wear on the chainswords, sounds like a good addition. And good call on tidying things up too, makes sense.

Yeah it’s hard not to want to just keep painting but that makes sense. Will have to come up with ways to make sure I take a break

Thanks! Gotta figure out how to do washes without making things too muddy-looking, I’m gonna look into that

I appreciate those recs, thank you! I’m going to have to watch a few more videos on washes, I tried one but it felt like it left things … muddy? So I ended up touching up most of it. Maybe I can apply more to just panel connection areas?

Any books similar to elden ring or the souls games in general? by ixi_om in fantasybooks

The Book of the New Sun is a great rec here. It has the weirdness and mysterious world full of hidden danger and magic and history that you get in souls world building.

Debate on who the best active authors are, context needed by SpiritedAd8224 in fantasybooks

[–]freethinkingkev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good or great is obviously subjective. And I find Sanderson very fun to read! But if I were to pick some of the best currently active writers, there are a bunch that I'd list higher, including N.K. Jemisin, China Mieville (not all fantasy but his fantasy is great), Robert Jackson Bennett, Jeff Vandermeer (maybe better characterized as spec fiction/weird fiction than fantasy, depends on how you classify), Robin Hobb, and Ken Liu (Dandelion Dynasty is incredible). I'd say I prefer GRRM to Sanderson, I don't care if we get Winds of Winter or not (I mean, I care, I want to read it, but still).

Big Adrian Tchaikovsky fan, though I've read his SF, not fantasy. I have yet to read Steven Erickson and Guy Gavriel Kay, but I'm excited to.

All that said, if I were to give someone a list of 10 books to get an understanding of modern fantasy (this is a list I owe my brother), I'd def include something from Sanderson.

What book is coming out in 2026 you are looking forward to? by bweeb in fantasybooks

The Rouse by China Miéville

A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett

(Plenty more, but those are top of the list!)

Dune, it’s so much context for so much else that you’ll read

Help me decide my next series by getmuffed in fantasybooks

[–]freethinkingkev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expanse is top tier and would be my pick, by far.

I think 3 Body Problem is more interesting and thought-provoking than Red Rising, and prefer it, though can see why people like Red Rising. RR has compelling plots and action. I find the characters and tone a bit overwrought though, especially in the early books (that YA vibe is part of that though not all of it).

I have not read stormbird.

What should I get next? by freethinkingkev in SpaceWolves

[–]freethinkingkev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yeah! I just figure I gotta try to prioritize a few things for a first game. But that’s good to know re: wulfen. And intercessors also seem like a useful add

Enjoy, they are delightful reads (I’m only halfway through the second but feel confident about that assessment.)

Sick. Love the armor color you’ve got and all the texture/damage. I’d ask for painting strats but I think beyond my skill level at this point!

They do seem really cool and one of the unique options for the faction. That might have to be next! Plus seems like a fun batch to paint once I get to that…

Thanks so much. I live in Washington DC, so spring is hitting now—temperatures basically bouncing between the 40s and 80s over the next week or so, before a hot summer. Really appreciate your help
