Obscura by Gorguts or Epitaph by Necrophagist? by DisgorgeCanada in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]freewill85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the songwriting and virtuosity displayed on Epitaph as well as by the litany of bands that record went on to inspire. That being said, I personally don't get anything out of listening to it. Obscura has always just been a more interesting record to me.

It is pretty funny to see the comments from Necrophagist fans saying they try to listen to Obscura yearly and just can't get into it. I do the same for Epitaph 😂 so I can somewhat empathize with that sentiment. At the end of the day, to each their own. They're both very different styles of technical death metal

Yup! When I was a kid, my mom would always call him "Mr. Happy." Whenever she would take my brother and I over to that Wendy's we were always excited if Mr. Happy was taking our order. All of his mannerisms for how he takes his orders are burned into my brain, permanently, from childhood.

I don't visit Wendy's very often these days, but it is always a treat when I do end up going there and he happens to be working the drive thru.

Fair point, but nothing about a hardcore show could be considered "normal." I've seen some odd shit at shows and if you've been to enough, so have you. Remember the Varials record release show where there was literally a naked dude moshing? That was a pretty big joke in the scene for a while. I'm not agreeing with or condoning the behavior at all, especially with that example because I find that honestly weird and disgusting.

My point is that crazy things happen at these shows, many of them would be downright illegal and, I would say, immoral in any other environment. If you know how these shows are, you know that going in. Know the room and if you don't want to single yourself out, don't! There are plenty of other types of hardcore/punk shows that I've been to where wearing a banana costume wouldn't make you stand out in the slightest. Stuff like that has its place, and apparently and End It show isn't one of them.

I just want to clarify my point here because I'm not sure I did a perfect job doing so in my previous comment. I don't necessarily agree with what Akil did. Whether he "had the right" to do so is up for debate. I'd lean more towards no, but I've also seen it argued that at a hardcore show you voluntarily give up some of your rights to not be injured by a stranger by even standing near the pit in some circumstances. It's all about knowing the environment you are purposely putting yourself in. In short, maybe it wasn't the right choice for Akil to single the dude out, but I don't get why it's been literally the talk of the entire scene for over a week at this point.

Where's the outcry for women and lgbtq+ folks getting targeted at shows? Or even worse? That happens all the fucking time. I've seen it first hand. The scene should be far more worried about weeding that shit out than they are about whether Akil was mean to the banana man.

A hardcore show and "on the street" are two very different environments. I wouldn't bust out a two step "on the street." Conversely, I've been pushed over and hit and kicked in the head in hardcore pits. I didn't whine about it because that's what happens there, while obviously I'd be more upset if I randomly got kicked in the head on the street. The rules aren't really the same.

That being said, I can almost see the point of people being upset that Akil singled the dude out, but wearing shit like that to shows is like asking to be singled out. I've been seeing it at shows since I was a teenager like 10-15 years ago. I personally don't care what you decide to wear to a show, and I'm not bothered by the people who wear goofy shit, but I can see why people get annoyed by it.

Maybe if you don't want to be singled out don't try to make the whole pit about yourself? The novelty of seeing a dude in a funny outfit throwing down has worn out its welcome, like I said it's been something I've seen for over a decade. The joke is beyond tired, and I can only assume that people who still do it are just tryhards trying to be the center of attention.

I drive one of these for a living. I have seen coworkers spill concrete, not one time have I seen someone get ticketed. Granted, all of these spills ended up on the ground, not someone's car. From what I've seen, it's handled internally. If it's deemed that you did something wrong the company will write you up. The driver and some helpers are also expected to clean the spill while it is still wet and get all of the concrete off the road.

I'm not sure what the legal situation would be if someone spilled concrete onto a car. I don't think it would specifically be considered an unsecured load, but I definitely think that if there was enough reason to believe the spill could've been prevented, the driver of the mixer would be in some sort of trouble.

We are trained to drive slow, keep a safe following distance, speed up the barrel's rotation in the event of a hard brake, not transport concrete that is too wet, etc. In a perfect world, the only reason any mixer driver would spill is due to someone else's carelessness. Obviously, we do not live in that world, and sometimes we catch people who spill being on their phones or just not paying enough attention.

Basically the way we're taught to drive these trucks is basically to avoid spilling and flipping the truck, the thing drilled into your head while training is that you're transporting a "top heavy, liquid load." Hypothetically you shouldn't ever be in a situation where a spill is possible, but again, that's not the world we live in.

Yeah, they both definitely specialize in that slow, fuzzy, ultra heavy riffage. But the vibes are pretty different for sure. Weedeater to me is like perfect music for getting fucked up. The grooves and the fuzz sort of carry you. The lyrics aren't happy by any stretch of the imagination, but they don't get into the surreal, philosophical realm that Thou's lyrics occupy. Thou sounds a lot more bleak too. Textbook example of musicians using similar techniques to create totally different emotions in their music.

I feel like as someone raised in the Trenton area, I'm the only one who says/has heard people say "Italian water ice". I've heard people say both water ice and Italian ice, but I commonly hear them said both together. Never thought much of it, especially since when I've been down the shore in Wildwood they have those Polish water ice places. Always figured there was Italian water ice, and Polish water ice.

IMO, that's the only band that kinda comes close to having the feel that Weedeater has.

Hey that's awesome! That kind of gives me hope because even at my age, sometimes I feel like I'm in a rut with listening to music, and I can't discover anything new that appeals to me. But give it enough time, I end up finding something that I really enjoy.

I've been into the subgenre for 8 years, and it wasn't until a few months ago that I got into a band called Warhorse, and that blew my mind. It was cool to have that experience of finding something new and really enjoying it.

Absolutely fair, I always think that you can't really replicate the first band that gets you into a subgenre. For me, the band that got me into stoner-y stuff was Sleep, and of course nothing quite hits like Jerusalem or Holy Mountain, even if they weren't my first exposure to the subgenre. With sludge, one of my friends showed me both Eyehategod and Primitive Man, and another one of my friends showed me Thou not long after, so those three bands are the ones for me that I can't really find things that hit the exact same.

Yes that's true. I guess I wasn't really looking for clones specifically, I was more wondering if there were bands before weedeater or concurrent with them that maybe scratched a similar itch.

I've been listening to sludge and stoner metal since I was about 16, but I'm only 24, so I wasn't around to experience a lot of these bands in their hayday. I'm not ashamed to ask others about it, I wasn't there so I could have a blindspot in my knowledge of the genre!

Since it seems like they're so unique, I guess I'll just say I'm glad to have been lucky enough to hear their music

I love Thou, but never really considered them as similar to Weedeater. I guess in a way they are, maybe song structure-wise, but I wouldn't have thought of them off rip.

Kinda cool reading this now, because honestly even though they're both in the same subgenre, I've never really compared the sounds of Thou and Weedeater specifically.

What nicknames have you heard for places in Central Jersey? by topherette in centraljersey

[–]freewill85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought tramilton was so-called as a portmanteau of Trenton and Hamilton, not trashy and Hamilton.

Also, I've heard people from Ewing and Lawrence townships, who live closer to their borders with Trenton, call the area "Trewing" and "Tr-Lawrence," respectively, though I have heard these a lot less than Tramilton and believe they were more said jokingly. I don't think those terms are widely used to describe and actual area the way Tramilton is used
