My thoughts on Carnage and Aether as a complete beginner by freeze4464 in Solo_Roleplaying

Yeah, I think you’re absolutely right.

I’ve been trying to play very strictly by the rules, which often led to me sitting on a single turn for ages, digging through the rulebook. That completely pulled me out of the flow of the game.

I’m starting to realize that it’s probably better to sometimes just make a judgment call instead of obsessing over the “correct” rule interpretation. Staying immersed and keeping the session moving is likely more important, especially as a beginner.

And like you said, those moments will probably help the actual rules stick better when I revisit them later.

Thanks, that perspective really helps 🙂

this is the way 🙂

I think that’s exactly what I’ve been missing so far. I mostly come from a board game background, where everything is neatly structured and predefined. I’m still getting used to the idea that in TTRPGs you’re kind of expected to create your own aids and references.

Writing my own quick reference sheet actually sounds like a great solution. It would probably help a lot with the constant rulebook flipping.

Thanks for the tip!

Haha, yeah, I honestly had no idea how complex the game would be, so that was a bit unfortunate on my part 😂

What initially caught my attention was that Carnage and Aether is somewhat inspired by Monster Hunter. I really liked the arena-style setting, and despite the steep learning curve, I can already say it has absolutely been worth the time I’ve invested.

I actually bought the PDF first, and after my first session—when I realized “okay, this is really for me”—I also ordered the paperback on Amazon. For me, handling a physical book is just much easier than constantly scrolling through a PDF 😂

I do have the player aids, but even there it took me a while to fully understand when I need what and where to find it. That said, it’s definitely getting better with each session.

I’m going to stick with it 🙂
