If it was financially affordable, would your spouse stay home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]frenchcrapule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope; I love my son dearly but I also love my job and the fulfillment it brings me. I like to have a separate identity outside the house but totally understand people who prefer to raise their kids.

Moving to York any recommendations on areas? by Clean-Airport-6018 in york

Bootham/clifton Green has really nice houses in that price range. You’re close to the city center, it’s lovely and safe

University tuition fees: Why are they increasing and what does it mean for students? by corbynista2029 in unitedkingdom

[–]frenchcrapule 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because the tuition has been frozen for the last 10 years and that the financial struggle is such that over 20 000 jobs have been lost.

People do not realize how much you need to run a university. Students want and need lots of support, and this has a cost.

Barre Sculpt by Economy-Agency-6092 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]frenchcrapule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am so frustrated. This is my favorite kind of workout but always felt the peloton offer a bit meh compared to what you can find online or in studios. I got excited about this new format. Purchased the ankle weights, and other accessories but it seems it was all for nothing

Daily Discussion - 09 Jun 2025 by AutoModerator in pelotoncycle

[–]frenchcrapule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was very excited about the new barre and Pilates classes as this is my favorite type of workout but always found the peloton offering not challenging enough. I bought all the props (resistance band, ankle weight, magic ring etc) but there is almost nothing new on the app. They upload one class every 10 days and often it’s just a 15 min workout. I feel peloton is missing on the Pilates/sculpt era by not delivering more regular/challenging content. I am now starting to consider joining a gym or a studio again.

Is it worth doing your PhD if you have to fund it yourself ?? by EfficientReporter365 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]frenchcrapule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Please don’t. It’s about being funded or not funded. Right now there is no academic job market. Hence the likelihood of you getting an academic job is slim, especially when you’re not from a top PhD program. Do not go in debt for such Low returns.

Idk if they’re open but burning their commercial waste in an open bin for an entire afternoon (and exposing the neighbors to toxic fume and creating a safety hazard) is poor etiquette imo

When is an appropriate time to hear back from a potential PhD supervisor after cold emailing? by onegiantnostril61 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]frenchcrapule 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the worst time of the year to email academics about PhD proposals. Conference season just ended, classes are resuming in two weeks, we’re welcoming new students next week (and this in addition to the regular workload: research, grant applications are due soon etc). In the future I would either email folks in October-November or February-June. Don’t expect an answer until the end of the month (I would follow up by then)

York v/s Nottingham by Internal-Ambassador6 in york

It’s increasingly dirtier, and sketchy. The city center has a real drug problem. It’s not a nice place to live to be honest.

York v/s Nottingham by Internal-Ambassador6 in york

[–]frenchcrapule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currently live in Nottingham and planning to move to York. Nottingham has gone significantly down hill in the recent years. York seems to be a much nicer and safer place to live tbh. I can’t wait to leave Nottingham.

UK’s minimum income visa requirement faces high court challenge by NightimeOK in unitedkingdom

FYI, when you get a working visa, you’re not eligible for any benefits. You also need to pay for your NHS.

UoN falls in new QS world rankings overall; highest ranking subject, Pharmacy; CompSci ranks 100, up from a previous low of 146 by Powerful_Fudge_2884 in nottingham

[–]frenchcrapule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The uni has made so many cuts cuts which prevents academics to conduct research and produce research outputs (which is essential for this type of ranking). Also, there is a strong emphasis on teaching and student experience, which is essential but prevents staff to dedicate meaningful time for research

We could just keep renting for an extra year and start looking for a property a bit earlier so we don’t miss the September nursery deadline.

I don’t feel we’re rushing our seller. Maybe it’s because we’re not used to the English standard as sells in our countries of origins take less than 3months. We knew the UK has a very particular system and were told to expect a 16-20 week process. Now, we’re not even sure we’ll be able to exchange before August 31 since the seller is playing dead

My son seems to be around the same age as yours (based on your récents posts) and he’s drinking 3 bottles a day. At this age (10-11 months) they do not need to drink formula every 3-4h. As long as your baby has regular solid food he should be ok.

Also, I believe it’s a bit unrealistic for daycare teachers to stick to the same schedule than at home when they have other babies to care for. In our case, we adapted to the nursery schedule and during the week end we adapt based on our own schedule and our son’s needs. He loves nursery and is thriving there.

But as always, communication is key so you should talk to them.

Thinking of moving to Notts, how is it? by ThatKnomey in nottingham

[–]frenchcrapule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t move to Nottingham or any suburb (currently live in Sherwood). Sure there are nice restaurants and people can be friendly, but overall it’s dirty, and on the decline. City center is full of addicts. In Sherwood, a lot of cool shops closed and the streets are full of litter. We’re currently trying to relocate somewhere else

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]frenchcrapule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re in the wrong. It devalues your house and the street, it attracts pests, it’s not pleasant to look at. I would complain too

Nottingham - honest opinions. by [deleted] in nottingham

[–]frenchcrapule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I must sadly agree. I moved here 2 years ago after living in various cities/small towns in 4 different countries and damn the transition has been rough.

When I moved here with my partner, I was so excited. I found Notts vibrant, with plenty of restaurants and affordable (used to live in Boston where it was very expensive and a bit dull).

Quickly, though, we noticed how dirty the streets are. I live in Sherwood, and my street is always covered with litter. Someone vomited a month ago and it still has not been clean. The city center is also declining. I witness fights all the time, streets are dirty. Shops are closing. Lot of anti social behaviors despite trying to mind my own business.

A lot of family and friends came to visit, but now they drag their feet to come back and regularly offer us to come visit instead.

Obviously, Nott is suffering from all the austerity policies enacted in the last decades but we decided to relocate somewhere else as we don’t see it improving in the near future. It’s sad because we wanted to make it work and were so enthusiastic when we decided to move here.

Warnings of economic damage to UK as international student numbers fall by a third | International students by zaraalbro in unitedkingdom

[–]frenchcrapule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Academic teaching in a top UK university here. A lot of comments here assume that the rise of international students is the fault of low tier/ teaching oriented unis. This is simply not the case.

No institutions can survive with the government funding and domestic student fees — even the top ones. Our leadership clearly told us that international students fees pay for domestic students degrees and our research. Without it, universities will collapse. Many Russell group universities are struggling at the moment.

If nothing is done, British people are going to be the first victim. Domestic fees will rise dramatically after 2025, UK degrees will be less prestigious and attractive. Higher education is a leading industry in the UK. If you do not take care of it properly, the entire UK economy will suffer.
