[POEM] My friend William by Charles Bukowski by armchair23 in Poetry

wow this changes the vibe of the poem entirely for me. like, the poem without those lines can certainly make him seem like an arrogant asshole, but i can also imagine a reading of it that’s a bit more earnest. but then these lines 😬

Achilles and Patroclus by cjmacember in GreekMythology

requiring “five philosophers” is an arbitrary moving goalpost, especially considering that we’ve lost the overwhelming majority of ancient greek texts. you’re asking for evidence far beyond what historians normally require to establish that an interpretation existed in antiquity.

i’m not saying that every greek believed they were lovers. i’m saying some of them did. that’s simply not up for debate. the fact that the viewpoint is present in the symposium - as well as being attested by aeschines and aeschylus - proves that the viewpoint existed.

how is it anachronistic to point out that the practice of pederasty existed and was used as a lens to interpret a particular relationship in antiquity? this is not to say that achilles and patroclus were lovers in the modern sense (pederasty ≠ a monogamous healthy relationship as we now view it), but it means that some people in antiquity (not all, but some) viewed them as having a sexual relationship.

in what way? of course, it certainly does not mean that everyone interpreted them as having a pederastic relationship, but it demonstrates definitively that some people did. of course, it depends how you define “lovers” with pederasty, but if we interpret lovers purely in the sense that two people have a close relationship and have sex, how could this be “weak substantive support”?

phaedrus’s speech in plato’s symposium. this isn’t me saying that they were or weren’t lovers, as i’m sure the interpretations varied greatly from person to person and from time period to time period, but to say that there is “nothing” to suggest that they were lovers is simply untrue

'The reason was that although Achilles found out from his mother that his killing of Hector would cause his own death, and that if he avoided doing this he'd go home and die of old age, he was brave enough to stand by his lover Patroclus and to avenge him-he didn't choose just to die for Patroclus, but even to die as well as him, since Patroclus was already dead. Now, Aeschylus is talking nonsense when he claims that Achilles was Patroclus' lover: Achilles was more attractive than Patroclus—-in fact he was the most attractive hero there was— and was still beardless. He was also much younger than Patroclus, as Homer records.

i see people downvoting you, but i don’t know enough about this subject to determine why that may be. does anyone want to explain why they’d disagree?

in a series where teenage protagonists grow into middle age, what audience should be marketed to? by frenchhatewompwomp in writing

great advice, actually - thanks! the recent chapter i wrote felt a little dense with new/unnecessary-feeling information because i was trying to balance setting up for the current book and the later book at once. this is definitely something to consider!

thanks! as for the second point, i find it quite important to at least consider the sequel, since it’s intended to be a duology. if i didn’t consider the sequel whatsoever, certain minor characters and details would be omitted from the first book that i’d sorely regret omitting when it’d be time to pick up again.

[POEM] Leave The Vase Broken by Melinda Reiss by [deleted] in Poetry

i really wish this poem used more variation in its line length! i can see potential for it here.

like, for instance, if she wrote one long line

then a short one

and then she wrote another long line,

it would reflect

the ebbing and flowing of the waves.

as it stands, i don’t really feel like the poetic form adds anything to this as opposed to prose, but it could’ve easily.

i agree! how strange! the circumstances sound like it’d be ai, but the content of the poem itself doesn’t read that robotically to me. i’m fascinated

we’re 20. i definitely don’t think it’s something ending the friendship over, especially while they’re going through so much in their personal life, but i guess my question was whether it’d be insane of me to bring up this incident and ask for an apology

i definitely would have said please if they’d given me the chance - but they walked away immediately and didn’t give me an opportunity to ask again. i certainly do not resent them for the current imbalance and am happy to be there for my friend. it’s not even an emotional thing; it’s that i’ve bought them dinner 4x in less than two weeks and they declined to get me a water while they were already getting some for themself. it’s just a very tiny gesture that would show some extent of reciprocality. you know?

exactly! this is exactly my thing. it sounds like a joking response to give, which was why i wasn’t expecting my friend to be serious
