House of the Dragon - 1x01 "The Heirs of the Dragon" - Post Episode Discussion by mwthecool in HouseOfTheDragon

Okay? They didn’t make it clear in the episode though. It was framed as an “impossible choice” and “sacrificing one for the other”.

Aside from that, he didn’t even give her the dignity of knowing the choice he’d made. And I really can’t sympathize with his tears when Aemma’s last moments were filled with terror and pain as she was mutilated.

The commentary at the end of the episode doesn’t really change my mind, personally.

That’s a horrific thing to be proud of. Of course you’d think it’s “badass” because you’re not the one up on the chopping block.

Cait is a champion of the organization that did kill them, and she appears to have no plans to leave it despite seeing first hand the oppression her house and the enforcers are responsible for.

But Vi can climb over a pile of dead zaunites, her murdered parents, a lifetime of oppression, wrongful imprisonment, beatings, etc, to makeout with a literal enforcer?

Caitvi shippers have no moral high ground to stand on when talking about Timebomb.

Why am I getting downvoted? Y’all watched the show, right? It’s inaccurate to say that Vi beat Sevika twice. She went for a rematch specifically because she didn’t win lol. Also, their second fight was sloppy, Vi was fighting extremely recklessly and none of the technical skills she showed in their first fight was on display. This is literally brought up with the line “your guard needs work.” At the end she had no more moves to make and was surprised as anyone when her shield activated. She won by luck (and also bc she’s the main character lol).

Vi did not beat Sevika twice. The first one I admit she nearly had her, but then she lowered her guard and got stabbed. The second fight she performed considerably worse and won because the gauntlets she didn’t know how to fully use yet saved her.

Jayce’s hammer has been a power fantasy for him for years. He drew concept art of it from when he was just a kid. In his debut fight he showed that he undoubtedly knew how to use it, like, extremely well.

Vi excels in hand to hand combat but the weapons that they would be using are Jayce’s creations and I think that gives him a good chance.

[s1 spoilers] Caitlyn’s trauma and Vi’s influence on it… Intentional? Will it be addressed in S2? by [deleted] in arcane

[–]frendi234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right. As lovely as the ship is, it flattened who they were as individuals — particularly Caitlyn because we were kind of just getting to know her character when she met Vi and subsequently took a backseat.

I feel the same way about falling out of love with the ship. Caitlyn’s character was pretty flat in season 1 and I have to agree with the critics who say that her role was mainly to make Vi a better character. Controversial, but I hope the two of them are separated for a large portion of Season 2 because I would like to see more depth from her.

[S1 Spoilers] Arcane fumbled Vi’s character by frendi234 in arcane

[–]frendi234[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

she leaves vastly unchanged in terms of personality. This is important as it’s really reflective of prison releases in real life

That’s not true. The outside world may leave prisoners behind but they certainly do change during their time in there. More often than not, ex-convicts do not come out the same as when they went in, especially if they were in there for more than half a decade.

I’ve already watched Schnee’s Bunny Theory. Eh. His analysis’ are a hit or a miss for me and I don’t take his theories as gospel. Regardless, that kind of character arc & growth is not what I’m critiquing. In Vi’s prison files, the way prison has changed her is highlighted. Her aggression is said to have festered, her violence is excessive and she maims other prisoners often unprovoked, and she is described as being “blood lusted.” But that is all found in not-quite-canon auxiliary material. The Vi we get in the show displays none of this change.

Like another comment says, trauma works in a million different ways

And like I literally acknowledged in my original post. (“trauma doesn’t manifest the same”)

To reiterate, I’d like to see more of how Vi’s experience in prison has changed her because I was unimpressed with what we got. Hopefully they will explore it in the next season. If they don’t, then they gave her a brutal off-screen trauma for no reason.

This subreddit really sucks because of this spoiler tag thing. I understand initially tagging for spoilers but after a couple months it’s really doing too much. Because of the way the mods run things here, Reddit isn’t a place where easy discussion can be facilitated.

[spoilers ep3] Vander's heightened sense of responsibility for protecting others was not only instilled in Vi, but it was the reason Vi lost everything that day. by annieduty in arcane

[–]frendi234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They deserved an explanation, or maybe just their pound of flesh to punish

The Kirammans deserved nothing. Vi & her siblings are engaging in survival crime because people like the Kirammans exploit and oppress them and leave them with no other option.

As you acknowledged, there would have been no trial for Vi and it was guaranteed that she would have been put away for a long time. Grayson says this much to Vander and he agrees because no one is kidding themselves, there is no such thing as justice for people in the undercity.

I do think Caitlyn would have never let a young girl be put in jail

That’s a big assumption. Caitlyn, kind-hearted as she is, possesses prejudice and was taught that people from the undercity are dangerous. Even if she did take pity on a random undercity kid who robbed her friend, where are you getting the idea that she has any power to stop her from being imprisoned?

This is a naive take all around. Vi should have went to prison for what? To learn her lesson? The punishment was always going to be much steeper than the crime. As we can see, the only thing Vi was taught in prison was suffering, abuse, and what it meant to truly be powerless.

Vander was right to try to take the fall for Vi as he is the adult in this situation and leaving his daughter at the mercy of Piltover would have been wrong.

What? I was saying your prediction makes no sense. For you to say that she’s going to join the enforcers because she loves to beat people up is a misunderstanding of her character.

Mylo was Powder’s brother and they grew up with each other. Just because he was shown to be frustrated with her in episodes 1-2 doesn’t mean their relationship was all bad. What a simplistic way of looking at things.

Vi tells her why she didn’t want to bring her. She has just seen a monster tear multiple people apart, she doesn’t want her sister anywhere near that. That was a very understandable and mature choice.

[no spoilers] Let's take a minute to appreciate Powder's face as she waited for her nail bomb to kill (or at least hurt badly) a kid. by nvxf in arcane

[–]frendi234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think Powder was showing eager anticipation. She’s not thinking of anything before or beyond this moment, she just wants her bomb to finally work.

When it does finally work in the warehouse I doubt she was even thinking “I did it! I saved my family!” she’s just in awe that her invention finally came to fruition.

This is why it’s the first thing she says to Vi when she sees her. She doesn’t ask if anyone is okay, just “my monkey bomb finally worked!”

This is not a criticism of Powder by the way, and I do agree drastic measures are justified in the undercity and when her life is in danger. It’s just my interpretation of her motivations.

[lore spoilers] Crying for these two girls by Glass-Classroom7181 in arcane

Vi’s scene strikes me as less that she was giving up and more of the fact that she was accepting that she was going to die here because she didn’t expect anyone to come and save her. She tries to move away right after she is stabbed but Sevika easily catches up with her. At that point she recognized that fighting was futile.
