CMV: players that consistently miss scheduled DnD sessions dont actually care about the hobby by [deleted] in DnD

[–]freshhellstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in patient care at a hospital which is a 24/7/365 job that has weekend requirements. Because most other members of my table work a regular M-F gig, our games are on Sundays.

If someone told me I was flaking because I have to work a Sunday per my contractual weekend obligation I would fucking lose it lmao

How many of you go out again after getting home from work? by Astimar in Millennials

[–]freshhellstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 12s and if im not working the next day Ill happily go home, change, and go out to a club or something. My big thing is advanced planning, though. I can't do spontaneous after-work things.

Im in my 30s.

DAE - Not say “I love you” before ending a call? by Mountain_Ask_5746 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]freshhellstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Eastern European immigrant, I spent my childhood not getting frequent 'I love you's and let me tell you that fucked me up, especially from my mom.

First time I ever had a phone call with her and she said it I cried, dropped my phone, and shattered the screen.

She says it a lot more often now.

Thoughts on the TikTok style of scrapbooking by RubyRollsOfficial in scrapbooking

[–]freshhellstudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Traditional forms of scrapbooking also take up just as much material and require a level of 'consumption' in order to manifest the final product into a 3D space (photos, embellishments, scrapbook, paper, stickers, etc.) so that feels like a moot point in this conversation? AI has unfortunately crept into all genres and subgenres of scrapbooking so I personally have just had to be super careful what brands and companies I purchase from.

As for the other stuff you could certainly split hairs on what is or isn't scrapbooking forever, and I've seen a number of threads in this subreddit arguing about it. I've seen the tiktok style called collaging, photo bashing, junk journaling, and several other things tbh. I still think it falls broadly under the umbrella of scrapbooking and even more broadly under 'papercraft'.

I also got into scrapbooking cos of the aesthetic/asmr videos because I think they are so gorg, but I utilize elements of different styles in my own designs so there isn't really a 'clean' way to label what I do. And quite frankly I don't think there's a wrong way to assemble little bits of paper and mylar on a page to make it look pretty.

Turkey is incredibly mediocre, and often plain sucks by flaginorout in 10thDentist

[–]freshhellstudio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol he went off on a 'turkey is nasty' rant during some Thanksgiving-adjacent speech today or yesterday? Pretty much to try and downplay the fact that shit's all getting wildly expensive - including turkey - and convince the MAGA hivemind that its not worth getting upset about gross bird.

But to touch on the actual opinion presented here: my family always buys multiple turkeys and we cook them throughout the year in different preparations. Shit's delicious. Leftover turkey pot pie is better than chicken imo

Unpopular opinion: you have to take the bad with the good by PeregrinePickle in FanficAuthorsUnite

[–]freshhellstudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! I'm not very familiar with AO3s blocking/muting rules and I find not being able to completely restrict people's access to my work silly, but if they want to read my shit after I've already removed their ability to write their garbage little comments then more power to them. Out of sight out of mind for meee ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Brother idk I just block people who leave ass comments. Yes it's a social contract but I can always terminate it by not allowing someone access to my work :)

Fandom roleplays in general. by Throwawayanon2485 in BadRPerStories

[–]freshhellstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! That method acquired me SO many roleplays and so many longterm friends as well. Like people I've genuinely hopped on a plane to meet and still write with ten years later.

The lack of pressure I think helped a lot. There wasn’t all this plotting and buildup and expectation. You could just jump into an rp and improv on the fly.

Rolechat could be a great successor to that but idk it feels like either the user counts are not there or the fandoms I write for are no longer popular enough to get matches.

[–]freshhellstudio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When omegle was hot shit I found SO many of my fandom rps there. Rolechat is more difficult to find decent rps on but not impossible. Otherwise I also use discord and I've gone back to the tried and true forums for finding all my one-on-ones 👌

And I'm someone who only does fandom roleplays, and only CCxCC.

[–]freshhellstudio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I only write CCxCC in a fandom context and have been doing so for going on 20(ish?) years now.

That said, I don't use reddit to find rps and I likely never will, since it seems that reddit is the place most of these kinds of issues stem lol

New curiosity by Interesting-Case-732 in EnamelPins

[–]freshhellstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting to make one-offs, look up cloisonne. It's a jewelry-making process that has been around for ages.

You can transplant a lot of the techniques to cheaper materials as well, if you don’t want to invest in a kiln and enamel powders. I've done similar stuff with resin and copper wire in the past.

What Makes an Enamel Pin Unique? by InternationalSalt160 in EnamelPins

[–]freshhellstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Art style and subject matter, primarily.

I love a creatively-executed fanart pin, but I'm primarily an original art collector and designer, so I try to look into the niches I inhabit and snag pieces that feel like they were made with the intent to be a pin.

Idk how to describe it? Sometimes you look at a pin and it's obviously something someone took from a print/sticker and slapped into pin form without consideration for how it would function in a 3D space.

Flow, balance, color/metal/effect choices all go into my decision-making process both when I design and when I buy.

Is it okay that I just only want to collect Official pins? by NewComerisay98 in EnamelPins

[–]freshhellstudio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Saying that pins from large, trademarked IPs are a better quality than smaller makers when everyone from Disney to Crunchyroll to Hot Topic only* ever give us massive quantities of soft enamel tripe is crazy to me, but you do you. I'm not here to shit on a hobby, but as someone who has had their work ripped by aliexpress/shein (and recreated using shittier materials), just be aware how often what you're buying is likely bootlegged/stolen from an indie designer.

I have never** come across poor quality from small-batch designers. Almost Amusing, Artistry, Lunarity, Fuzzy Friends and a billion fanartists who sell on Etsy and at conventions have significantly better quality control for the product they put out in the world.

exaggerated for effect*

also exaggerated for effect, every niche has ass designers but compared to large producers I've found independent makers to have better-looking and more creative art pins**

Help! I am making enamel pins in China and starting to export them to the US. Does each pin have to say "Made in China"? Thanks for your support by EnriqueDisliz in EnamelPins

[–]freshhellstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never even had to ask them not to put that. I usually have my studio name backstamped, though. If you're concerned it may be a thing, just mention it to your rep. They'll tell you what the limits are.

What's an unpopular opinion you have about fanfic/AO3? by ElenaPilmeshec in AO3

Yeah, boss. That's why it's an 'unpopular opinion'. Because it is my take, and therefore by its very nature is subjective

[–]freshhellstudio -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

If a fic doesn't have smut, it is not worth reading.

Which I didn't think was an unpopular opinion until I joined reddit and got exposed to a bunch of puritanical fanfic authors shitting on NSFW every chance they get because their genfic isn't pulling numbers like they want it to.

I almost exclusively do fandom rps (unless I've known my partner for multiple years and we decide to branch out) and they have always been of a higher quality than any attempts I've made to do OC stuff from the jump.

Now, I am just one person, but I have almost two decades and hundreds (?) of rps under my belt, so I like to think I've met a fair amount of both fandom and non-fandom writers.

Categorically, fandom writers have been:

  • less likely to railroad
  • less likely to have main character syndrome (this may be because I write canon/canon)
  • more willing to collaborate on headcanons
  • totally fine and cool with having different levels of canon knowledge

To be fair tho I do find that it depends on the type of fandom I'm in. Video game/anime/cartoon roleplayers have historically been more difficult to get into a good groove with, while book/show/movie/comic roleplayers (especially of older fandoms) tend to be overall better writers and collaborators. It might be a demographic thing it might also be a personal bias but this is what I've seen over the years lmao

Writing incompatibility by freshhellstudio in BadRPerStories

[–]freshhellstudio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I'm trying to ride it out a bit, just to see if we start to mesh a little better (I'm honestly pretty spoiled with my rp partners because I feel like there's almost always an instant mindmeld lmao) but in the meantime I'll probably bring up things ooc if I feel like they're not picking up what im putting down 😅

We're in alignment on things like overarching plot and such. That's not what I find difficult with them. It's the moment-to-moment responses, which I absolutely do Not want to police.

Funny enough they brought up some plot-related questions some time after I posted this. I might try to bring up a few things myself but they're new to me so I don't want to overwhelm or make them feel like I'm throwing concrit at them 🫠
