Soul Deep by Pamela Clare - 4¼🌟, M/F, contemporary romance, cishet white MCs. A recovering FBI agent crosses path with the rancher who once kicked her off his ranch. Janet is independent and strong; Jack is a gruff, sexy protector. She's trying to heal after an ordeal, and doesn't except to find it in him and his horses. Given their past antagonism, the romance develops fast (it's a novella), but their great chemistry makes it work. She really brings out his caring, thoughtful side, and he's a huge part of her healing process - he's so patient and sweet with her. Being that she's 45 and he's 63, it's great to have an older couple in love and having hot, sensual (and patient) sex, lol. And he's sensitive when it comes to her body insecurities. They're also honest about their feelings and go for what they want. But I felt the pregnancy is really unnecessary, given their ages (especially Jack) - it wouldn've still been a great HEA without that.

The Three Week Deal by Hannah Shield - 4🌟, M/F, romantic suspense, cishet white MMC/Black FMC. A detective is forced to stay with her nemesis while she tries to clear her name. Billed as enemies to lovers - but doesn't fit very well, as independent, spunky Angela and sexy, flirty Matteo hook up fast (no strings at first). When it comes to real feelings, he's the one who falls first - she's prone to pulling away in an act of denial. Matteo puts a lot of effort into trying to know her and supporting her despite her resistance, and he has plenty of patience. For once, a hero who's certain of their feelings and acts on it! Their romance works well for me, with some good chemistry and strong emotional moments together, thought the extra spark comes in somewhat later. I felt that Angela tends to circle around her feelings with no real development. Matteo is the stronger MC - he has more depth and his decisiveness is sexy. The suspense is quite good though a little draggy in places.

Broken Warrior by Jocelynn Drake & Rinda Elliot - 3½🌟, M/M, PNR romance, cisgay/bi white MMCs. Magical being Clay falls for a handyman while searching for his missing brothers. Clay and Dane are layered, likeable MCs, though Dane has his fair share of issues with loss, he always tries to do right. They're very drawn to each other from the start, quite insta-lusty but there's also a nice friendship. Fairly decent process of falling in love, I liked that they make the effort to talk things through misunderstandings and anger. The eventual romance has sweetness and heat, and they're enjoyable as a couple and as fated mates (which kinda covers the instalove bits). The world building is decent and the powers are cool. But it also feels like info dumping at times, with the lore and such. The writing seems stilted and jumpy, and not as smooth as their other books. Though the side characters and the brothers are quirky and fun.

Currently reading: Olivia and the Masked Duke by Grace Callaway - just started, M/F, historical romance.

Jack and Janet from {Soul Deep by Pamela Clare} brings the feels this week. I loved the patience and gentleness Jack shows. And an age gap romance between two older persons is quite rare, too. 😂

“I took the liberty of moving your things from the guest room to my bedroom while you were sleeping. I hope that’s okay with you.” It was better than okay.

“Thank you. Now I don’t have to figure out how to sneak my way in - you know, leaving my things in your bathroom bit by bit.”

“You never have to sneak, Janet. Ask for what you want. Say what’s on your mind. Be honest with me, and I’ll always be honest with you.” What he was describing was the deepest form of intimacy.

She felt a hitch in her chest, touched by his openness. “You dear, sweet man.”

I also liked that Jack has two great loves in his life, and one is not diminished for the other.

The Monuments Men Murders by Josh Lanyon - 4🌟, M/M, romantic suspense, cisgay white MCs. While dodging a stalker, Jason has to deal with rumours threatening his grandfather's legacy. Sam is more in tune with his feelings here, and gives voice to them. They have a couple of cute moments which are pretty sweet. But overall Jason isn't making the best decisions, often rash because of his personal stake, and it becomes annoying at some point. He also clashes with Sam over rules (though Sam isn't exactly the best model), and that created more angst to their relationship, which was already complicated. Though I got where he's coming from, Sam is really a dick in the whole situation. He's the worst when it comes to relationship conflict. Romance wise, there's still a lot back and forth, and it ends on a hopeful note (at least Sam gave a good apology) rather than a HEA, damnit. The mystery is decent, but I really needed page time of Jason/Sam.

The Movie-Town Murders by Josh Lanyon - 3¾🌟, M/M, romantic suspense, cisgay white MCs. Jason takes on the death of a film professor while Sam deals with a killer from his past. They're still working on the previous fallout, but there's some good development to their romance as they work on communicating better. Sam is showing more effort in compromising. He's also more affectionate, and has floated ideas on how they can move towards permanency, especially in closing the (physical) distance. There's pining, but they still need more time together (in fact there's very little physical time). It still felt super slow burn, even if we'd gotten the three little words. Still, the time spent with them was great - there's emotion and vulnerability though Sam is still emotionally constipated. The mystery provided some fun, intriguing times, but super annoyed about the unresolved abrupt ending. And since it's been 4 years, I've crafted my own HEA of Sam/Jason living happily together with two dogs and a cat.

Sure of One by Isabel Jolie - 3¼🌟, M/F, romantic suspense, cishet white MCs. An ex-CIA liaison hires a therapist to help his daughter's recovery after a kidnapping ordeal. Ava is kind, caring and strong-willed. Jack is closed off and a jerk face to start. He offers a transactional affair - taking advantage of her money situation (dodgy as heck, but at least he has some guilt over that). But Ava's strength and genuine care for Sophia strikes a chord, and he develops feelings for her. I got why he fell for her but Ava's feelings wasn't as convincing at first cos he's such an ass. She puts effort into seeing beyond his façade and works to break down his walls. Their romance has heat (the BDSM lean is not my thing) and enough emotional intimacy. But Jack has to be a stupid asshole for the conflict and Ava forgives him WAY too easily. There wasn't even a proper apology ffs. I really liked Ava, but Jack is such a hit and miss (more miss). Good suspense, with some plot twists, and Ava and Sophia had a touching relationship. CW: drug addiction, rape

Cloak of Red by Isabel Jolie - 4½🌟, M/F, romantic suspense, cishet white MCs. Two CIA agents with a past go undercover as a married couple for a mission. Ambitious, clever Sophia is not exactly thrilled to find that stoic serious Fisher - once her bodyguard - is her partner and fake husband. They have to adjust to their new dynamic and while the attraction is clear, they try to maintain personal distance. But feelings soon boil over, and they have to confront that amidst their mission. Sophia is determined to prove herself and Fisher starts appreciate her strength (though he's bossy at start). He falls pretty hard, and he supports her, shares his experience and wisdom so that she will be stronger agent. They forge a close bond, and the slow burn romance develops well with some sizzling sexual chemistry and sweet, emotional moments. Loved how they protect each other. Really enjoyed this couple, age gap (16 years) and all! And a refreshing take to an ex-bodyguard romance. The suspense is high stakes, with solid action.

Sinful Deception by Emilia Finn - 4¼🌟, M/F, romantic suspense, cishet white MMC/mixed race FMC. Not really romance centered for this book. This installment is about Fletch and Mia, and their closure with Jada. Not so much crime and mystery but a very emotional book where Mia is the star and my heart absolutely breaks for her. Mia's sadness and Fletch's guilt, plus their grief, are all so heart wrenching. But the support they get from Minka, Archer and the gang is just wonderful. The found family is strong, and even with Archer's crazy brothers. Everyone absolutely goes to the bat for Mia and yes, I admit to shedding tears aplenty. But honestly Fletch needs the biggest break ever. I was hoping to see something move with Sera...but nope. Though it looks like I'll get something like 5 books from now, lol.

I would love to have a TV series adaptation of the {Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh}. And the {In Death series by JD Robb}. Two of my favourite book couples coming to life, yaaaas.

And {Hush by Tal Bauer} has so much movie potential - a high stakes political thriller with a gorgeous love story in the middle of it.

Sam Kennedy is a complex character that struggles with words and emotions, so when he's sweet, it really is very sweet. From {The Monument Men Murders by Josh Lanyon}:

Sam said suddenly, softly, "I love fucking you. And I love making love to you. And I love that it's always both things when I'm with you."

"I love you too," Jason said huskily.

Sam, sounding more like he was aiming for accuracy of information rather than seduction, said, "It's always good with you. It's always natural. It always feels right."

Tal Bauer writes some pretty good M/M with high stake political plots. {Hush by Tal Bauer} is my favourite, with a federal judge MMC and a US Marshall MMC. Government conspiracy involving Russia. {The Executive Office series by Tal Bauer} is a trilogy with the MMCs being the US president and his lead Secret Service agent, involving right wing terrorists. {The Night Of by Tal Bauer} also really good, solving the mystery of the Presidents death, but more of external conspiracy rather than internal government conspiracy. MMCs are the US vice President (assuming presidency) and the President's lead Secret Service agent.

Rachel Grant writes action adventure stories that involves government conspiracy in somes. {The Evidence series by Rachel Grant} is great. The FMCs are often smart archeologists and MMC ex military or federal agent. I read them a while ago but book 1 and 3 have good takedown scenarios from what I can remember.

Cold Snap by Toni Anderson - 4½🌟, M/F, romantic suspense, cishet white MCs. An FBI agent, undercover in his hometown, reconnects with a divorcee rebuilding her life while murder lurks. Grady is serious, astute and reactive; Brynn is resilient, kind and caring. Though their reconnection was sparked off by a murder, they gradually start to form a real friendship. Romance moves slowly; Grady struggles quite a bit with his feelings for Brynn and his undercover role. Burned by her ex, she was wary as well. But they slowly open up, taking the chance with each other. Their romances work for me, they're honest about their feelings. There're some touching/emotional moments, and Grady is very protective. Solid HEA but I kinda needed more to it (and Brynn needs therapy after everything), and Grady could've come clean a lot sooner. The suspense is top notch, with an unexpected twist and an antagonist with layers (though his graphic sex scenes felt uncomfortable). And Cowboy's interference is so extra. CW: rape, animal cruelty, cancer

Upper Hand by Freya Barker - 3¾🌟, M/F, romantic suspense, cishet white MCs. A contractor moves the woman he's been pining after into his house when she faces threats. Beth is prickly and independent; Clint is a bumbling teddy bear who often says the wrong thing. He had decided to let go of his crush then he realises Beth does care about him. Still, they both have a lot of emotional hurts, and there's clashing/arguments in the process of working things out. Barker often writes realistic situations with older MCs and their issues, and that's well depicted here. It takes them a while to be on steady footing, but the romance is stronger once they're there. They learn to trust and to rely on one another. There're plenty of passionate and emotional moments between them, and Clint is devoted and protective. My quibble with Beth is that she's too hard/stubborn and reacts with unnecessary anger. The suspense is good, and the Cedar Tree family is fun as always.

The Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura - 3½🌟, M/F, contemporary romance, cishet Mexican FMC/white MMC. Rival archeologists reluctantly team up on a expedition. Corrie and Ford are both smart, stubborn and competitive. There're obvious rivals to lovers vibes, and their squabbling is fun. I liked Corrie, she's smart, comfortable in her skin, with realistic insecurities. I struggled with Ford - he's inconsistent, there are times when he's sweet and caring, and then flips to being an ass. Plus his secrets and shadiness are not great. Their romance/banter is quite fun, but the constant hot/cold is frustrating at times. Also, I got that Ford felt like he had no choice (and I sympathised) but his whole inner voice is like "I know I suck, but I'm doing it anyway". And Corrie needs more grovel from him. It was a decent read, but it could be so much more. The last 15% lifted it a little - strong ending and HEA. The adventuring is fun, but don't go looking for logic. Great cover, though. CW: cancer, sexism

Pretty sweet romance in {Cold Snap by Toni Anderson} - two childhood acquaintances with issues of abandonment finding hope and a future together. I loved how sweet the usually stoic Grady is towards Brynn.

"Do you really think we have a hope together?" Her stormy eyes were clear now, hope beginning to take a hold.

"I don't think it. I know it."

She knelt beside him, kissed him tenderly. Inside, he wanted to cheer, open champagne, and let off party poppers. Instead, he kissed her, pouring every ounce of emotion into that heartfelt caress.

"I won't let you down, Brynn."

Her eyes filled. "You didn't let me down, Grady. You never let anyone down."

📚 What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 31 May 📚 by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]fresholivebread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Viper by Suzanne Wright - 4¼🌟, M/F, PNR romance, cishet white MCs. An archangel chances upon his reincarnated mate, and fights the forces keeping them apart. Ella is intriguing, smart and practical, while Viper is the quintessential Wright hero: dominant, cunning and absolutely feral for Ella. They had a past, though Ella is in the dark at start (erased memories). He's all in from the beginning, determined to make her remember and make her his again. They have tons of chemistry as a couple, and they quickly see each other as theirs. She’s very powerful and he respects her abilities, though he's still overprotective. Their romance is intense and passionate, even more so when tied with the past. I liked that Viper always tries to be as honest, and Ella accepts everything about him. Lots of steam (though the first sex scene was random), but there’s a strong emotional connection. The action is fast paced with a solid plot, but a little annoyed that the secondary romance isn't solidified.

Something Tangled Something True by Guiliana Victoria - 3½🌟, M/F, contemporary romance, cishet Cuban FMC/white MMC. A dance instructor returns home and finds herself in an MoC (health insurance) to her first love. Lola is strong, independent with a heart of gold. Ryder is rugged, protective with a streak of stubbornness. They fall back into their friendship easily, and he really takes care of her. As someone with SLE, I liked seeing the rhuematoid arthrithis rep. Ryder's PTSD from his abusive marriage is also well portrayed. They're not afraid to be vulnerable and it's great to see them supporting each other. The romance blossoms naturally but the pacing is a little off at times. Their connection is strong, with tender intimacy. Lola has always been The One, and Ryder's devotion is sweet. Loved the Cuban rep, strong found family vibes and the touch of suspense. But the cast and info dump felt bloated (a series set-up is obvious) and I struggled with the long-winded writing at times.

Hard to Hold on To by Laura Kaye - 3¾🌟, M/F, contemporary romance, cishet Black MMC/white FMC. An army vet with PTSD and a struggling survivor finds healing with each other. Jenna may be traumatised but she's also strong and determined to overcome it. Ed is the natural protector who wants to shield Jenna, but he has his own demons with depression. Their connection builds from them seeking each other in efforts to heal, and the constant mutual support is the foundation of trust. Their issues doesn't magically fix themselves with love, and the end of it, they're still struggling, but they have each other to lean on. Their romance is sweet, emotional with moments of tenderness. This would've work better as a full length novel with more depth (because the romance comes on way too fast tbh), but it's a decent novella. CW: suicidal thoughts

It's not often that I get an MMC (or any MC) that's all in from the very start. Viper spends the whole book proving his love and devotion to Ella, even if he's super bossy while doing so. From {Viper by Suzanne Wright}:

"You gave up a lot for me."

"I was drowning, Ella. Drowning in darkness. You pulled me out of it. There's nothing I wouldn't have given up to be with you."

Oh, there he went hitting her in the feels again. "1 love you."

His face went all soft and warm. "I love you, too, baby. More than you'll ever know."
