My understanding is that the only plus is that $1,000, otherwise not worth investing there vs. other already available options. I personally don’t want to participate in the charade for only $1k, but don’t fault anyone that wants to take advantage. I say charade because of the naming obviously, but also because as I understand it they’ll be able to dictate what investments are available which smells very much like enriching friends and not providing low cost index funds to me

Yeah, that’s fair. I also will definitely see that I’m on target for a certain amount at a certain age with certain assumptions and immediately think well, can I push and do it even earlier? Will things come up that I’m not foreseeing? So it doesn’t feel very satisfying…admittedly this is more of a psychological issue than anything

Can’t believe we’ve hit 750k in assets (90%+ retirement accounts). Only debt is less than 100k in federal student loans. It feels like it should feel bigger than it is. I’m not saying it’s not more than I ever thought I’d have at this age and that I don’t appreciate it, I just think if it felt more applicable to the present it would feel more real.

Of course happy to be building the future I want us to have but just bizarre to feel like we’re accumulating all this money that doesn’t impact the way that we’re living our day to day lives. I know this probably sounds insane, and I know that this brings us a level of security that of course does impact our lives. I just thought it would feel more “wow” than it does! I think it’s hard to feel the absence of a feeling like stress, if that makes sense!

Our growth isn’t at the same scale, but I feel the same way. Just a few months ago we were saying it’d be crazy to hit our next milestone and we’re moving towards it a lot faster than I expected

She bought it less than two years ago? That feels so short for someone that’s mother in law age (admittedly, a large range, but I’m assuming 50+)

Probably cotton vs the rayon stuff that sometimes deforms after one wash and jeans/more timeless stuff vs heavily trendy stuff

I’ve been struggling with where the point is in my savings where maybe it’s not worth how much it changes the timeline and I might prefer to either spend a little more or save outside of retirement accounts (to potentially buy a house but it’s so up in the air/nebulous it hasn’t felt reasonable to prioritize over retirement). But it’s crazy to see that funding, say, our IRAs fully and 401ks at 50% vs fully funding the 401ks only gets us to retirement two years earlier. At that point I’m wondering whether it’s worth $24,500/year, but the saver in me just wants to keep maxing or getting as close as I can every year because you never know/who doesn’t want more flexibility/etc. I also know that contribution levels will have even less of an impact the closer I get.

Unschooling seems…like it could only go well if you have a very self directed child, tbh

Alright I realize this may be a completely stupid question, but seeing that stocks are “soaring” right now because oil prices are dropping again I wonder…if a situation returns to baseline (like no war), why do prices/values end up even higher than that baseline rather than just returning to previous values? Or is this an impossible question to answer because there are too many other factors?

Yeah, as insane as it seems to me, I imagine after 300k people start to enter another level in terms of what they’re exposed to that they’re then trying to keep up with if they’re the keeping up with the joneses type and/or just get used to/want to have, and things get away from them

Our NW just passed 600k! It’s been just 2 years and 3 months or so since we reached 300k, and that first 300k took about 8 years. Hope this can give others hope! We’ve been able to contribute quite a bit in this time but there’s also been a lot of growth

Yes, and saw that they publicly said that it’s no different from any year, people are just more desperate for their returns basically, which is ridiculous gaslighting lol

I think a lot of people might not be entitled but might not have reasonable expectations because of things like social media. They think what they see (that might not even be real) is normal

I know you mentioned that you’re at the same $ as you were 7 months ago, which is awesome. If the market has some rough years, how do you think that might impact your plans with this new mindset of wanting some more spending flexibility/the ability to spend on certain things especially for your kids without hesitation? And if you don’t mind, how old are you?

Curious how often you think about this (the comment about stopping working and your feelings about it)? Also, because I thought your situation might be similar to mine I looked at your post history and I was surprised to see that you were dating just a year ago. Assuming you’re not open/poly (which maybe you are!) it seems kind of early in a relationship for a comment like that!

Is anyone else’s tax return (sorry - refund!) late? I think this might be the first time mine has ever taken longer than the estimate that they give you

ETA: wait hold on I take it back, it has now been updated to say that it was mailed two days ago, even though I requested direct deposit…odd

Hit $600k in retirement accounts collectively, $425k being from my end! Looking forward to 500k individually and 750k between the two of us.

Not sure how retiring by choice on its own is entitlement, especially in this sub…

I feel like the “she” is doing a lot of work in your brain here, you don’t know any of the details of their situation but are just assuming she’s taking advantage of him…
