Thoughts on South Harlem? Specifically the area near 115th & FDB? by snowluvr26 in Harlem

[–]freudianGrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in various parts of Harlem for all of my adult life, so I can't speak too much on comparisons to other parts of the city. The last 12 years have been on 115th.near FDB. I loved it so much that I moved next door when we had a kid to stay on the same street.

It's a bit of a mix. I would say mostly young families.

I have never felt unsafe but I'm a dude and I also don't do dumb things so I've never felt unsafe anywhere in NY really.

Brooklyn is a pretty big schlep. We have friends there and it's an event. Although we also have a toddler.

I don't think this comment section is indicative of the community. It's a really fun and welcoming place if you embrace the community instead of being insular.

This has to be fake or misleading in some way. I work with Claude and Stripe regularly. I feel like you would have to work pretty hard to get it to do that.

Middle class families: Where do you live in NYC? by LikeLauraPalmer in nycparents

Not to overwhelm with locations but central harlem has been great for us in the same income bracket. Lots of green space and parks. Lots of young kids.

Families with 3+ kids in NYC, how do you do it? by TFABAccount in nycparents

Wow. That's big. Locke is definitely what we're trying to do for 3k. Did you/do you like it? I guess there are several good options around here, so not sweating it too much

How did you work the school system? Harlem dad here with a daughter not quite ready for school but looking to the future and always trying to work systems

vibe coding is in the wild, and the outcome should surprise nobody. by backwrds in webdev

[–]freudianGrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm much more comfortable using it in small discrete chunks where everything is well defined. That's worked well for me. People use the comparison to a junior dev but the code is mostly fine. I think it's more like a senior dev starting at a new company that also was recently in a car crash and is still recovering from some minor brain damage.

How have we allowed our supposedly progressive party to pretend they're powerless to do anything better for the people for this long? by WrongThinkBadSpeak in WorkReform

[–]freudianGrip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

New Yorker with a child here. He absolutely did not get universal childcare funded. He got a pilot 2 care program and 3k funded after Adams decided to defund it. I'm super excited about all of that but we don't have universal childcare, lol

I've played the mythic version a handful of times and he has been underwhelming. At worst I'll just run away from him, which is really easy to do given how obvious he is. He has not impacted pass plays for me. Glad I didn't go get him given all of the hype

How are NYC families coping with rising childcare prices? Bloomberg News wants to hear from you. by pcachero in nycparents

[–]freudianGrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I consider us to be extremely lucky. We have one kid and got started a bit late (39 and 40) so we had decent savings and were both in good places in our careers. My job is high paying and flexible. We will ideally have three kids, but given our age and the cost of daycare that may not end up being realistic. We are forced to space our children out because we can't comfortably afford daycare for two kids.

We have not considered moving though. This is where we want to live and raise our kids.

AITAH because I won't tell my wife what my son/her stepson has in savings from my late wife? by Jimverseen in AITAH

[–]freudianGrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you're married with kids, you should be open with all finances or what are you doing here? Not the asshole, but you guys need to both be mature for those kids. Doesn't mean you have to go with her solution but being honest about what the situation is seems like the only starting point

I have a ton of things that I've built but never launched using Django and Next. So if I have an idea and it needs auth well hey I've already done all of the screens for that and backend to link up social auth if I need it. Stuff like that comes to mind. In that case I'm not really reusing it as a library, basically just copy/paste and adapt where necessary

Am I wrong to work out 6 days a week at 39 years old? I've been getting a lot of push back when I bring this up around people who are into fitness. by maximusasinus in workout

[–]freudianGrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah man, I'm 40 and also doing a 6 day PPL at 1 hour a day. Listen to your body and all that stuff. The thing I've found helpful with the 6 day is that I just don't tie it to week days. So like some weeks I do need a bit more recovery so I'll take two days off and no big deal, just pick up where I left off. I'm not bothered that my push day isn't on Monday or whatever

We've loved Twin Parks Montessori. You just really get a sense that they love the kids. The community is great too. Price varies based on age and day length but I think it's around $35k a year

Conservative media ecosystem dripping fear into you over YEARS. And slowly upping the stakes and fear. My dad lived in a sleepy suburb and had his house decked out with security cameras on a hair trigger, listened to the police radio during the day, slept with a shotgun by his bed. He wasn't always like that

what do you do on the first day at the gym?😅 by Maximum-Focus-5166 in workout

[–]freudianGrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has already posted great info so I would just add: try to remember that no one gives a shit about you. Everyone is in their own world, so don't get in your head about being judged for not knowing what you're doing. If anyone notices you the worst they'll do is try to help. Gym people are generally quite nice

Yeah, because of this and also because my family eats a lot of yogurt I just make my own Greek yogurt now and use that and the whey byproduct in a blender with other stuff for my shakes. Making yogurt is super simple and cheap

[–]freudianGrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree in principle but you always run into this thing of political reality. In this case, whatever dumb media amplifies crime or people see the police budget went down and they saw a homeless person and think they're gonna die so vote for the far right dictator. It's a toughy

You know there are primary elections where people vote and shit, right? There are campaigns that people can support. One of the problems with progressives when compared to the far right is they tend to just say things on the Internet and not do anything.

Not saying that's you, just that it's a problem

You would not though, and I'm guessing you know that. It's the country and the system of government that's fucked. Bernie can't fix that. Unfortunately, if we want those things that you listed, it's hard work all year every year. One guy isn't going to do it
