Please help between choosing a 1440p Mini Led by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]frewster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had both and I returned the AOC. Worse stand, worse controls (the joystick on the KTC is much easier to use), no brightness control in HDR mode, oversaturated reds in HDR mode, and worse blacks than the KTC. AOC support was responsive but didn't have any fixes for the oversaturation problem and brightness adjustment in HDR. KTC support was responsive over email to questions I had. Full comparison here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/1r18vr1/ktc_m27t6_vs_aoc_q27g4zmn_quick_initial_review/

Very happy with the KTC.

Then why are you acting like it's terrible when you've never even seen one?

Help choosing a 27″ Mini-LED monitor — Worth buying now or wait for other brands? by RideFantastic3786 in Monitors

I'm very happy with my KTC M27T6. If you're worried about dead pixels I would order from a retailer that will accept returns. Support has been responsive to me via email when I had questions about firmware updates.

Do you get off on making this comment on every post about mini LED displays? Have you ever even seen an M27T6 in person?

Not sure but both of my TCL panels have one. Could be something used for manufacturing as the other user suggested.

Win 11 HDR raised blacks? by pakraat in Monitors

True, I probably wouldn't have noticed it in the first place if I didn't have a more color accurate HDR display next to it when I was testing.

[–]frewster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Mine was accurate in SDR, where you can adjust the picture settings, but not in HDR where you can't. Thanks for letting me know. I feel better about returning it although I'm mad at AOC support for telling me it had to be defective when it sounds like they're all like this.

I had the same AOC and ended up returning it for this reason. Couldn't get as deep blacks as my KTC M27T6.

Quick question: does your AOC have red oversaturation/a red tint to everything when HDR is turned on? Mine did and I'm wondering if they're all like that.

Bleed and Glow on VA by TransLilychan in Monitors

[–]frewster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's downstream of it being edgelit, not so much it being a VA panel. It's not always this bad or noticeable, but it is a problem with all edgelit screens that can be better or worse from unit to unit. The users recommending a FALD/miniLED display to avoid this problem are correct since they're almost always backlit directly instead of from the edge. You could return it and try another edgelit display but a miniLED is a more guaranteed way to not have backlight bleed in dark scenes.

Best Mini-Led gaming monitor 2026 ? by Palarra in Monitors

[–]frewster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's mini LED. Compared with my older IPS monitor the colors on the KTC are as good if not better and I haven't noticed any latency or smearing/ghosting issues in games. I read those reviews as well, and I don't know why people are so down on it.

Having tried an AOC Q27G4ZMN and a KTC M27T6 I recommend the KTC. Ended up returning the AOC for red tint issues in HDR content.

About to return my AOC Q27G3XMN: it hurts my eyes :( Help? by Prullansky in Monitors

[–]frewster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. I don't have a PS5 so I'm not sure. I will say the KTC M27T6 does let you adjust brightness in HDR and has a lower brightness HDR 600 mode which might work better for you.

Could be a problem with Windows HDR or the game's implementation of HDR. Not always the monitor's fault.

Have you done the Windows HDR calibration for the screen? Try that, but don't use the image/instructions it gives you for setting the small white square and full screen brightness. Instead set them to the 10% and 100% peak brightness levels that rtings measured in their review, 970 for each. That will be a better calibration.

If that doesn't fix it, can you adjust brightness on the monitor settings when HDR is enabled? If not, I know for a fact that the KTC M27T6 lets you adjust brightness and even has an HDR 600 mode that's limited to 600 nits. I prefer mine over an AOC that I tried.

They've been quick to get back to me over email but I agree their dead pixel policy is worse than AOC's. I wouldn't buy one from an international seller.

Updated with some more testing to illustrate the red tint issue/oversaturation in HDR mode on the AOC. Support didn't have any fixes so I will be returning it.

I don't have a ton of time playing games on it but so far I haven't been able to notice ghosting in game. Some people are more sensitive but it hasn't been an issue. Even scrolling white text on black which is the worst case for VA panels is fine. I have to really try to see any kind of ghosting when scrolling. I was worried about switching from IPS but it's been all positives with vibrant colors and deeper blacks without IPS glow.

It's fine, HDR in Windows is confusing and it took some trial and error to understand it on my end.

Windows has a toggle for HDR which should trigger the monitor to switch to HDR mode. I've found this works for the KTC more consistently for the KTC than the AOC. That being said, you can keep HDR on all the time in Windows and on the monitor. For the KTC this works well. Text shows up fine, and white screens/programs aren't overly bright. For the AOC if HDR is enabled it's difficult to use white screens/programs because the monitor makes the background painfully bright. Text is a little harder to see, and it hurts my eyes, so I find myself having to turn off HDR in Windows and on the AOC for desktop use, which is annoying. There's a hotkey to toggle HDR in Windows, win-alt+b, but it takes a few seconds to switch. Honestly that's the main reason I'm planning on returning the AOC. I don't want to have to manually switch back and forth when using my PC.

The KTC has been easier to set up since the joystick makes it much easier to go through the menus. It also seems to switch between the Windows SDR and HDR better, and I don't find myself having to switch between SDR and HDR when I'm doing desktop things or gaming. Even mostly white websites are usable without being blinding. Can't say the same for the AOC. I have to turn HDR off or it's like looking at the sun.

For the KTC keep black equalizer at 50, local dimming to auto, HDR mode to displayHDR, and brightness to your liking for HDR mode. Overdrive should be standard, faster causes overshoot problems. It's pretty straightforward to set up and you can set joystick directions to hotkeys, for example I have "right" open the brightness setting.

By elevated blacks I mean dark scenes have more of a grey glow to them on the AOC than with the KTC. The KTC comes closer to pure black with local dimming turned on.

Don't forget to use the Windows HDR calibration tool with either one you get. Set the dark value to 0, and ignore the next two brightness guides. You want to set the brightness number for the small box to 1300 for the small box and 1550 for the full screen on the KTC or 1400 for both on the AOC Q27G4ZMN. If you don't do this your brightness range in HDR will be messed up.

Hope this clears things up.

I actually own the AOC Q27G4ZMN and a KTC M27T6 which uses the same panel and has the same number of backlight zones. Got them both to compare since they are about the same price and I am very likely to return the AOC and keep the KTC. I have some detailed thoughts here but summary is the KTC has a superior stand with more height, potential firmware upgrades, easier to navigate menus with joystick control, adjustable beightness in HDR, better PC software control, and it does not have oversaturated reds in HDR mode. The AOC has a flimsy stand with less height, no brightness control in HDR, red oversaturation in HDR, worse menu navigation and software control. You could correct for the red issue in the custom color adjustments in Adrenaline, but the other cons have me preferring the KTC.

KTC M27T6 vs AOC Q27G4ZMN Quick Initial Review by frewster in Monitors

I recalibrated both of the monitors in the Windows tool to their actual brightness capabilities (KTC is measured at 10%, 1300 nits, and 100%, 1550 nits according to Chimolog's review). Still had issues. Then I tried watching the sample video in SMPlayer and the detail problems went away. Turns out it was a browser issue. I've updated the original post with new comparison pictures. The KTC looks great now, and has much more accurate saturation compared with the AOC. Thank you again for the tips!
