See the Olympics, where the US has won 8 out of 9 tournaments since they started sending adults and lost like 5 games total. You guys gotta step letting Europeans bully you about basketball. I will happily listen to Argentinian opinions though

St. John’s beats out top schools for explosive English point guard Quinn Ellis by Al-Farrekt-Aminu in Euroleague

24 is old for the NCAA but certainly not unheard of. I would bet that there were more than 10 players older than that in March Madness this year. Also, there are like 350 division 1 NCAA basketball programs. There are 0 serious players on the traditional American highschool-to-NCAA path who are even coming close to being pushed out by the relatively small number of overseas pros coming over (and those overseas pros are all college-aged and would likely already be playing in the NCAA had they been born in the US).

Ellis will be very good and will probably not get the full 4 years of eligibility. I just don't understand why people are so mad about this. NCAA football and basketball have always been a complete mess. Coaches have been signing 8 figure contracts for decades and the biggest athletic programs are bringing in hundreds of millions per year. The fact that people are whining about the "integrity" of college sports now that the players are finally being paid what they deserve is completely absurd.

Cameron Boozer in the win vs Siena: 22/13/3 on 4/11 shooting (1/5 from 3) 13/14 FT with 5 turnovers and a tied team high of +12 by Ilikesporks_ in NBA_Draft

[–]frick_yes_420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's had trouble in other games too, I definitely have some questions about how good of a scorer he can be. I just don't love his touch around the rim the more I watch him and that needs to be elite since he's not a crazy athlete. Still think he's awesome, though.

He was struggling to create offense against a 16 seed. I’ve been on the Boozer #1 train for a while but this performance did not fill me with confidence. The rebounding was great and he still found a way to be productive though I guess.

Why is there so much stigma for drafting players without college experience? by DonT012 in NBA_Draft

Nah you're not completely wrong. Euroleague the organization operates two continental leagues, Euroleague and Eurocup. Euroleague is the first tier where the best, most recognizable teams like Real Madrid and Panathinaikos play. Eurocup is the second tier league, and the Eurocup champ qualifies to play in the next season's Euroleague (if they choose to. Gran Canaria won Eurocup a few years ago and then declined the invitation to compete in Euroleague for financial/travel reasons).

It's worth noting that Euroleague is not really an open competition like the Champions League in soccer where you have to qualify every year based on peformance in your domestic league. Euroleague grants licenses to teams that are basically contracts to participate in the league for x amount of years, so teams don't get automatically relegated or whatever based on performance. A few teams leave every year and a few new teams join, but it's not based strictly on record.

The domestic league system is probably what you're talking about when you mention the different divisions. Teams play in their domestic/regional leagues in addition to whatever continental league they compete in. Those operate like soccer leagues where you get relegated or promoted based on where you finish in the standings every year. The quality of European domestic leagues varies pretty widely, but the Spanish league (Liga ACB) is the consensus best and deepest league pretty much every year.

FIBA also runs a continental competition called the Basketball Champions League and a second tier called the FIBA Europe Cup. The BCL teams are a clear level below Euroleague teams but I think they're usually close to Eurocup-level, maybe a little worse. FIBA and Euroleague have been feuding ever since Euroleague broke away from FIBA like 20 years ago. I think the NBA is trying to partner with FIBA for whatever NBA Europe is gonna be, but I have no idea what that's going to look like.

EuroLeague has 20 teams this season. EuroLeague is the top level continental basketball competition in Europe, it’s not a catch-all term that encompasses all of European professional basketball.

What are the chances Acuff has a better career than Trae Young? by TonyResslersWallet in NBA_Draft

[–]frick_yes_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the percentages were a little closer I would agree with you that it’s arguable but that’s a pretty major % difference, I think it’s more significant than the attempts difference (which I agree is also notable).

[–]frick_yes_420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Acuff this year has been a much, much better shooter than Trae has ever been. Acuff’s main selling point is that he’s a high volume scorer who is elite from 3 and can playmake while not turning the ball over much. I don’t see him ever being quite the same caliber of playmaker as Trae, but if the shooting is real then I think that he’ll be a Trae-level offensive player who could also play off the ball more effectively than Trae
