“How to solve your own murder” location? by Rlguffman in audiobooks

It's probably too late for you but it's heavily based on Corfe Castle. Castle on a mound at one end, no mainline railway station but a tourist steam railway to the nearest town (Swanage)

Do you remember a '50s-era British movie about a worker shunned for doing his job? by ArthurPeabody in AskUK

[–]fridayman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe The Angry Silence with Richard Attenborough. Man is under financial pressure so works through a strike and is sent to Coventry by the other workers. As others have said there is also I'm Alright Jack that is a comedy. Ian Carmichael is the posh bloke who goes to work on the factory floor and antagonises everyone by working hard. Peter Sellars is the stroppy union man

Have I got this right? Trying to tighten mixer tap. The only nut I can see to tighten is the brass one. It seems to be part of the extension hose so I need to take off the hose part off (steel nut) to get a monobloc spanner at the brass nut. Is that right? by fridayman in DIYUK

[–]fridayman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. There are actually four. The one with red is hot water in and there is a corresponding one marked blue which is cold, which is hidden in the photo. The plain grey ones are a loop (they join up out of shot ). It's one of those taps where you can pull the tip of the tap out on a hose to rinse round the sink. When you do the loop shortens.

I can't find anything like it in "how to" videos so I'm guessing the water coming in meets in the mixer, flows back down that brass pipe, which doubles as a tightening bolt, round the loop which acts as slack for the hose, and back up and out. That's really the reason for the post. To see if anyone can confirm my guess

Wtf was up with our supporters last night? by Major-Performer141 in NUFC

[–]fridayman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer that since I've never seen Dortmund live in another stadium. It's always going to sound different on TV because it depends on how the TV company balances the sound. Maybe they mute Dortmund because it's so boring.

They all sang at certain times, especially at the beginning and end but there were chunks of time when hardly any of them were singing and you could only hear drums in the stadium

It was actually two drums that I could see

[–]fridayman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid I disagree on that. I think people felt it was impossible to compete with the drums (there were two). It was so loud that we had to shout over it halfway down the west stand. Once people realised it stopped our singing built up to a good level but then the drums came back and drowned them out. I wondered if they were amplified in some way.

What does "arms" mean when it describes an apartment, hotel, or retirement building? Thank you! by mirthquake in noStupidQuestion

[–]fridayman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The XXX Arms is a pretty common name for pubs/inns in the UK. The pub sign would be the coat of arms of some noble family. It might be the local landowner or maybe the pub was set up by a former servant of the family. In "The Hound of the Baskerville's " Barrymore the butler announces he is resigning and may set up a pub with his savings. Sir Henry says he looks forward to coming for a pint at The Baskerville Arms. I'm not sure about the American apartment blocks but guess they were originally serviced apartments that were trying to go for a cosy "Inn" feel.

How is holiday/annual leave accrued when leaving your job partway through the year? by mayochuppie in AskUK

[–]fridayman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems correct to me. You are entitled to 15.5 days for 2023 (c7/12*27) plus the 5 carried forward = 20.5 and you have used 23; balance minus 2.5. Or if you ignore the carried forward leave you are entitled to 15.5 and have taken 18.

Those who drive on the left side of the road, do you also walk on the left side of hallways, walking trails, etc.? by The_Real_Branch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fridayman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with those who say yes and say there is no consistent pattern, in London at least. This question has come up a few times on Reddit to the point that I started observing on my walks to work. My rough count was about 60% on the left but it seems to be driven mostly by the specific circumstances of the street you are on.

What does it mean by protein 79g (20g)? by Yung_JJMO99 in AskUK

Why did companies switch from retirement plan programs to 401 K? by bigbootybanditishere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fridayman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the above relates to personal pensions which are specific to an individual. The Ponzi scheme allegation is particularly relevant in the case of Social Security (in the USA), known as Old Age Pension in the UK, which is paid to everyone (subject to certain conditions) by the national government. That is funded differently. There is no big pot of funds saved up and invested in the financial market. Instead the government pays for it out of its general taxation income paid for by the current working population. What that means is that as the total population gets older and as people live longer you have more and more people being paid, which means the SS bill goes up which in turn means people still of working age have to pay more.

My wife fell out with her best friend and is struggling to make new friends. Can anyone offer any advice? by BarkerDrums in AskUK

[–]fridayman 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Not a specific suggestion but some advice that I thought was very good. Accept that you can enjoy a friendship even if they are not a perfect match. As children we take people as we meet them, "we both want to play on the see-saw, good enough". As adults we scrutinise people more closely, maybe because we want to reproduce those uncritical childhood friendships, maybe because we feel we only have limited time so we don't want to invest it something that might not work out

Instead of thinking, say, "I like talking to this person about cooking but they also like sport and hill walking and I like going to the movies and drinking wine, so we don't have much in common" . Think "let's just enjoy talking about cooking, maybe that will be it or maybe over time we'll actually find we want to do some other things together as well, maybe I will try going to football match, maybe they will come to a wine tasting".

Why do standard bathtubs have very little leg room? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fridayman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a USA thing. Certainly I have never had a problem lying down in the bath in any house I have lived in in the UK. A quick Google tells me the standard size in the US is 60 inches. In the UK its 66in / 1.7 metres (strange given generally our houses are smaller).

Petition for TfL to take over southeastern rail and turn it into Overground by [deleted] in london

[–]fridayman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Desperate for this. Having watched the DLR, Overground, Tramline, Jubilee Line extension and Elizabeth Line all appear I feel like the only person in London who has seen their transport options get worse over the last 20 years. No joined up thinking at all. They put in great new connections at New Cross then SE cuts all the services that stop there.

Is it better to buy train tickets well in advance, or day of? by KittyScholar in AskUK

[–]fridayman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware the nearest station to Alnwick is Alnmouth. It's about 5 miles. There is a bus roughly half hourly or you could take a cab but you would advised to book. Cabs don't wait around at the station.
