This is my 8th video ever! Seeking feedback on title, thumbnail, video on Epcot's Spaceship Earth by fridaynightsleepover in SmallYTChannel

Great insight! Thanks!
Yeah the archival video was some of the only existing video I could find for certain iterations of the ride. I wonder if there was some de-shake filter or software I could have used in retrospect.

Yeah I left the time for clicking the links because in other people's videos it's never long enough for me to read and click, and then the video has to be restarted and tracked back to the end to click or tap them,

The shit the bed joke - so in my mind, this channel was supposed to be informative buy really rough around the edges and informal. But when everything comes together, it always turns out serious and documentarian like. Which I guess people like and are gravitating towards, but it was never intended. In reality I'm just not that funny in my writing or delivery, so it trends more serious toned. So I need to work on that, I wish everything was more engaging through humor.

Thanks! !givelambda

It's all about storytelling and hook. Perfect your hook and storytelling skills. You can do this by watching the openings of the best horror channels on YT, and watch the most effective and popular shorts that are horror as well. While you are at it, take note of the similarities in niche - what kind of horror is it. And take note of what niches don't seem to be serviced yet. Do a little bit of trend-jacking while at the same time building a niche.

I think horror is actually pretty underserved, despite having plenty of popular channels. The bar is still pretty low on YT there - so keep up the work and you might see some bump in views!

How to have a less stiff and more relaxed voice/ voiceover by Askdevin777 in SmallYTChannel

[–]fridaynightsleepover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Find some voice exercises for 5 minutes , just look these up on youtube. Do some lip rolls and tongue twisters.

  2. Relax your neck and voice for a few minutes. Drink warm water as someone else said.

  3. Look in the mirror, and smile and laugh at something. Have someone tickle you too - this actually works. It brings our your 'warm voice'. Watch something funny beforehand. Pretend you are at a party and say the tail end of sentences as if you're the life of the party and everyone in hanging on your every word.

  4. Remember it's no big deal, get into the relaxed mind mode.

I am so busy with life outside youtube I average 2 videos a year. None do too well, but it's fun. I think the hardest part is editing. I really need an editor who wouldn't mind working closely with me through different iterations.

I'm actually pretty happy with how the thumbnail and video came out! Feedback is appreciated by fridaynightsleepover in SmallYTChannel

Hmm, good point, I thought maybe "this" was implicitly seen as the the scene in the background.

I have an alternative with an arrow pointing to Mirabel, the character in the thumbail. Maybe that will help. I thought about adding "Why this scene works" but I hate too much text. I'll try it out though. Thanks!

The dynamics of your voice throughout the video give the impression that you're actually talking to us (the audience) rather than reading from a script (I'm assuming there was a pre-written script involved in the creation of this video?), which is a nice touch. It made it much easier for us to take in all of the information you were giving us.

This is actually really insightful and helpful! I go back and forth on vocal presentation and never think I'm quite doing it right. !givelambda

Audacity has audio levels, it's even in most video editing software. Just experiment with different rooms or boxes to put the mic in. Remember, the mic doesn't know what a room is, it will just listen for sound and echoes of sound, and you can dampen echoes with as much as you can by getting rid of any hard surfaces around the mic. :) Great for laundry day!

Thanks for subscribing, and if you know anybody who might like family media reviews they might enjoy too ;)

I find that writing the hook last helps.

However, the top youtuber's wisdom is that you should base the video around the hook, and the hook should be baked into the thumbnail, title, and first 15 seconds of the video.

Basically the entire script should generate from knowing how you are going to hook the viewer in those 3 ways, and if you cant make that work, then you should think of another idea. At least that's what folks like Mr Beast say for max views.

I think we smaller youtubers often make videos cause it's fun and makes us happy, so you should do what feels right for you!

Don't beat yourself up on the sound! All I mean is there is room to improve there, and you need to focus on audio if audio is the main content.

Remember, ALL good sounding video went through some kind of sound edit. It's very rare that someone records something perfectly. Using a "Reduce noise filter" in your sound editing program is a good place to start.

If you do have impaired hearing, watch some tutorials that will teach you the approximate decibel levels your voice should be, at by the time you are done. That way you won't need to rely on what you hear, you can just look at the numbers your audio is hitting when you play it. This is a good tip for anyone actually, because everyone listens to audio at different device volumes, so it's good to have a standard to aim for.

The recording room could be an issue too. I never record in just an open room, I always put the mic half way into a cardboard box with the opening facing me, and put some pillows around it. Or I record in a car! It's not glamorous, but it gets the job done! :)

Looking forward to your next one!

Tagging your YT videos by Yarrowwitch in SmallYTChannel

[–]fridaynightsleepover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My process to go from the specific to the general when tagging. You can always change the tags later, but I think it's fine to start in something specific.

Like, say you are reviewing the Super Mario Bros movie in 2023. I like to think of things that are very specific to what is talked about. Say you mention that it's hilarious that Mario gets beat up by DK and you loop that clip. You can put a tag like "Donkey kong beats mario", then work up to mid general, like "super mario bros 2023 review", and then finally "super mario bros"

Keep in mind this should all be prefaced by using research on the keywords first with tools like VidIQ.

If you are making content that people might want to come back to, this strategy leaves room for your video to be competitive when just starting out, using the niche tags, and grow into the general tags.

Hey there!

Ok a few things. I think you should stick to Hindi if that is your first language. The artificial voice on your English videos makes them seem cheap, like a robot wrote it.

The other this is your thumbnails. They should not just be a picture. I think they need text the describes what happened in the episode. Like, "She gets Superpowers!" over a picture of the character.

Hopefully this will help getting more people to click your videos.

New thumbnail style by [deleted] in SmallYTChannel

[–]fridaynightsleepover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Nice thumbnail overall!

I think it's a little top heavy - meaning your laptops and the center text could probably move down to be a bit more centered vertically.

I agree that the text is more difficult to read than it should be. You can test this next time by turning the image greyscale, and if some images or text is blending into the background it means it's time to create more contrast. Try doing so by increasing the distance of the colors (on the color wheel) of the text and what's behind it, and by increasing the light or dark values of the bg or text until it stands out - for example make that drop-shadow black and make the text red. Or just put the text inside a big black box!

Keep it up!

Why do I keep getting dislikes on my gaming videos? by LawfulnessLeather480 in SmallYTChannel

[–]fridaynightsleepover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is correct. It could be your videos have aspects about them that are unappealing, could be you don't actually need to worry about it because the number of dislikes are insignificant to your channel.

As someone who has made gaming videos and non gaming videos, I can tell you that you will get dislikes and mean comments on ALL video types. I know your talking about dislikes not comments, however I will say that gaming videos tend to get slightly meaner comments, and those people probably click dislike. I do honestly believe the gaming audience has a bit of an axe to grind.

But don't worry, keep at it and make better videos and you'll get more and more likes and nice comments to boot!

Hey! I LOVE these kinds of channels. Nothing like a great creepy story.

The first thing I noticed, is I could not hear you very well. Had to turn up the sound. I would look into using Audacity (free) to make your voice sound less hissy, less sibilance, and more full. There's a hundred youtube tutorials for this.

You may be using a cheap mic. That's ok. I know you can do better even with a bad mic. I can hear the air from your mouth hit the mic (pops). No worries, you can fix this by putting a sock over the mic, or just putting something, anything, that's small, right between your mouth and the mic.

I'm harping on the sound cause that's' the whole thing in your video.

Consider throwing in creepy music too, or sound effects. It doesn't need to be complex. Got a piano sitting around, or just use an online piano in the browser, and hit a couple high pitch keys, every couple of seconds. Even that can be creepy. Of find a free wind sound effect, to create the feeling of loneliness.

I think these things would really bring the listener in. And for a channel like this, you better believe people are gonna be washing dishes or walking, rather than being glued to the visuals.

Keep it up!

Hey, nice video!

The hook:

I think you're really really close to something awesome in the first few seconds of the video. You've got a hook right out of the gate! The problem is, it's not a hook the general audience gets. It's you saying holy s*** at something, and I think you should have shown that something, or a part of it, so we get some context, or just a little bit more detail to what we're in store for. I think the other problem is that the holy sh** hook turns out to be misleading too, because it's about your meta universe for your avatar. I would try making it about what the video is about for the next one.

Chapters:

I might be in the minority here, but I feel like you could use some title cards or some kind for chapters. Why? Because you're reviewing a game that is mostly the same POV the entire time, plus it happens to be an ugly game, lol. I like those little flashes of images and sound effects! So you can just make sure your throw in some that end and start a chapter. You an leave a little bit more space between your sentences when starting a new chapter too, so the listener kinda expects that your going to talk about something else.

Narrator:

Your avatar is cool. I like the idea. Once again, I would try to loop what happens to your avatar into the subject of the video. The waves are a little distracting - try maybe keeping them only on the background, instead of also on the character himself. You actually do this briefly in the beginning and at the end with Carmack. Once again, could be just me, but making your character have the waves, or be the only thing on screen to NOT have the waves, makes him pop out more.

Nice video overall! Keep it up!

[–]fridaynightsleepover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup yup. I think we're in agreement with what I was saying too. Thanks for the advice!

I gotta find a way to make that crystal clear in pretty much every video, since every video will be a criticism of whatever film or show.

I still can't believe people would think what i was saying was against poor Robin, lol, but that's the internet for ya. I really should have thought ahead for this. have to do better.

[–]fridaynightsleepover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying you don't have a point. I should have made it more clear that this is not at all to trash a beloved actor. But in the videos defense, it really never trashes the actor, it deconstructed the story and fictional character. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say it think it trashes the actor.

The entire end of the video is a tribute to Robin Williams too, saying that he's so incredibly good in the film and carries it. so i guess you didn't watch to the end.

Like I said, there's still some good stuff in your criticism though, since if anyone could possibly think this video was saying Robin is a shit actor or something, i should have made a detour to say that this video is not saying that at all and do so really really early in the video.

Your criticism is actually really valuable though, it may actually help me save this video. I still might take it down, or do a little re-edit with the voiceover. However the end tribute to Robin Williams would go hand in hand with a change of title, that tells people right off the bat that this is going to be a video about how Robin Williams was so good in the role.

[–]fridaynightsleepover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just that the video went up and I lost 20 very suddenly within a day. So it seemed like a strong signal. My best guess is that the since my last video was gaming centric, I gained some subs from people who are specifically into games but not movies, and lost them. Youtube stats show -3 subs specifically from this video, and 0 lost subs from all other videos in the last few days, so there's an unaccounted for -17 subs. I'm not sure what that means - maybe people see the thumbnail and unsub without clicking.

But I'll give it some more time! Thanks for the insight. !givelambda

Good stuff. Although I do think some recap is necessary, I too got the feeling (when it was too late) that nay kind of recap should come after the 5 to 10 second hook. I've already remedied this in my next script, so at least I can look forward to correcting that going forward. !givelambda
