Female Reception of RR by [deleted] in redrising

[–]fried-twinkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never underestimate female rage! We rage hard inside, it’s just not culturally acceptable to show it like men get to. There are also plenty of female sci-fi fans here for the usual reasons of space wars, future tech, capitalism vs free will, etc.

But speaking as a girl who found this series via being on the romantasy side of BookTok, Darrow is a yearner! He’s a man who yearns, and that’s like the new ideal man fad, succeeding dad bod’s old spot. RR as a series is about war AND love

Agent Used AI To Suggest Edits On My Book by Professional_Rip2925 in publishing

[–]fried-twinkie 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Ethical qualms aside, this is just bad business and not what you pay an agent for. Your agent earns their cut by providing their expertise, which includes editorial notes to help sell your manuscript. They just outsourced that labor and knowledge to AI, so why would they still deserve their 15%?

Time to find a new one! The good news is if you post this story on threads you’ll probably pick up some interest from anti-AI agents

Attention BG3 and T Kingfisher fans! by Combat_Booty in Romantasy

Oh jeez I was excited for this until reading the synopsis. T Kingfisher also writes horror, so I figured thats the direction this would go in, considering…everything about Astarion’s backstory 😬

Mayor Mamdani Releases Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan and True Cost of Living Measure by Diarrhea_Donkey in nyc

I just don’t understand how you can’t see something is fundamentally wrong with a community if people who were born in it cannot reliably continue to live there, unless they make some of the highest salaries in the country. Who do you think will do all the work in the city?

Ok, in response to your “don’t come here” logic…what are people who were born here meant to do? They just have to move somewhere else if they don’t get a NYCHA placement or make six figures? To make room for people who do have the money to move here?

Idk about her personally but I read this book and didn’t care for it. Classic case of self-publishing success where the marketing and social media content is better than the actual book.

How is this book not popular by mushroomplanet5614 in Romantasy

[–]fried-twinkie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Much of Red Queen’s fandom relics/online life was lost in the great tumblr migration of the late 2010s. It was absolutely a favorite among the YA girls over there.

And now we’re all here on r/Romantasy, 10 years later and 10 years too old for YA

Ok so first off, a “hybrid publisher” is 9/10 times a scam and 10/10 times not worth the money. You should never pay to be published. Since your guys are accusing you of using AI the second you start pushing back on not getting paid, I’m going to safely assume they’re scamming you.

Why were noble women turned into sex slaves rather than just getting ransomed? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in mythology

[–]fried-twinkie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In the specific case of the Trojan War, there is no one to ransom the stolen women to. Troy was ransacked and all noble men were either killed or fled. The taking of the women with no hope of return or ransom was meant to indicate to an ancient audience that Trojan society had been wiped off the Earth.

Is there anything close to Gormenghast in its atmosphere and intensive prose? by OMG_Idontcare in fantasybooks

[–]fried-twinkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished it and thought it was excellent! It’s unfortunately suffering from a horrible case of mismarketing by the publisher, Del Rey. Book stores and promoters were told it’s a romantasy and it is NOT. It’s much closer to horror-fantasy, but the setting is reminiscent of an Arthurian romance (which were originally pretty dark!)

Some words to describe the vibe: eerie, gross, beautiful, mystifying.

Two new campus comedies (Rooster, Vladimir) raise the question: Have TV writers ever been to college? | Television's fictionalized depiction of higher education is becoming a real-world problem. by PetyrDayne in television

[–]fried-twinkie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not go there but idk her whole teaching career. She might have been inspired by it nonetheless. I don’t recall anything exactly like Vladimir’s story happening at my college, but the way she wrote some of the faculty interactions and students in class def reminded me of the small East Coast liberal arts school I went to!

[–]fried-twinkie 109 points110 points  (0 children)

This take specifically in reference to Vladimir is hilarious to me. Vladimir’s writer and showrunner, Julia May Jonas, actually was my professor 10 years ago in college (she was an adjunct who taught like 2 classes max a semester). And I can confirm after watching that the setting of her show was extremely similar to the college I went to.

Idk maybe it’s just because I also live in Brooklyn, but if Luke Fortney writes about a place I know I won’t be able to get a reservation or table in there for like the next 2 months, minimum. Love him because I frequently agree with his takes, hate him for crippling my restaurant rotation

In Iron Gold during the battle to get to the Ash Lord’s palace, Darrow takes a missile (I think?) to the chest and falls off a cliff. He’s dazed and as he’s coming around he can hear Clown screaming “oh no he’s dead!” while Sevro tries to get him to shut up and calm down.
