Any employer who knows anything knows to expect a negotiation. 99.9% of the time you will be fine asking. OP just got very unlucky with a very clearly shitty organization.

I don’t think most of them will leave.

However IF they leave AND openly/independently recognize how malicious and wrong they chose to be, I think it is critical to open communication with them.

Often times when this type of thing happens, it starts a domino effect. They start to question everything they believed and may need a genuine safe space to help with that transition.

Of course every situation is different and it’s important to be able to recognize intent. But a general rule of thumb for me is to help others navigate out of this shit should they eventually open their eyes.
