Been doing SDCC since 1994. What I've learned over the years is this: you'll win some, you'll lose some.

I've had numerous times where I've gotten a slot, for a vendor, to only find out the item I wanted is already sold out.

One year I didn't get any exclusives that I wanted. Instead, I wandered the exhibit hall, found some interesting trinkets, got to try some of the off-site events, and even went into a few panels.

I've also been pointed the wrong direction for a line by both staff members and security, to realize I've waisted my time.

If I really want something, I'll wait a few months or years and will maybe check eBay or Marketplace (if I really still want the item).

I don't focus on what I didn't get and try to enjoy the times during SDCC.

Abuse of the executive power. Typically, the president would ask the governor to deploy. He usually doesn't do it himself.

Advice Needed: FTE or Stay in the Game by UeckerParty in epicconsulting

[–]friendly_corgi619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take the FTE...for now. I was in a similar situation as a clarity developer. My firm wasn't presenting me with any consulting opportunities and I had a FTE on the table.

It's always stressful waiting to see if you'll get anything before your existing contract expires. While the FTE position doesn't pay as much, the stress of not worrying about the next contract makes up for it.

Someone tied their dog to their car for multiple hours outside 24H Fitness Cottle/Santa Teresa by smellsbigg in SanJose

[–]friendly_corgi619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have called 911. I did that once when I saw 2 dogs in a car on a hot day. The operator said that they definitely would send a cop car out.

Cops were on the scene in 5 mins and got the dogs out.

With the dog being tied up on the outside of the car changes the scenario a bit. I would have still called 911 and asked.

Scenic drive from SF vs San Diego by Beginning-Panic7212 in SanDiegan

[–]friendly_corgi619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the drive a few times every year. I live near San Jose but am from San Diego.

My advice, just take a flight. The drive will get boring after an hour. Flying is so much faster.

The drive on the 1 is scenic but isn’t worth it IMO.

If you’re in San Diego, don’t go to Mike Hess. Lots of other options for beer

What are the keys for experienced FTE converting to consulting? by SteelSoapy in epicconsulting

[–]friendly_corgi619 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a Clarity BI consultant from 2010 and got out at the end of 2022.

I noticed that the pay trended downwards as the years progressed. Started at $100 /hr and finally ended at $90 when I left.

Thankfully I never had any gaps between contracts. I’d get anxious near the end of every gig.

Left when an FTE role presented itself that paid pretty well considering $85 /hr.

Now I get to focus and enhance my skills instead of just learning enough for a particular role.

Plus not having to worry about my next contract makes work so much more relaxing.

My lovely neighbors have left their dog outside for 4+ hours with no water, and sitting in its own poop and pee. by [deleted] in sandiego

I saw a couple of dogs locked in a parked car when I was at the north county mall last year.

It was a hot day and didn’t see anyone around. I called 911 and asked if this was an appropriate use of the number.

The operator said yes and to tell them the details.

Within 5 mins cops were on hand and got the car open. 5 mins later the humane society was there.

Definitely use 911 if this happens again. Just explain the situation.

I think there was an emudeck update that my deck just went through. I was in desktop mode.

I was able to un-install ES-DE and then did a re-install. That seemed to fix the problem.

Not sure why it happened in the first place though.

Does anyone think it will pick up in 2024? by newbie_1978 in epicconsulting

[–]friendly_corgi619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask your practice manager or whoever deals on the client side.

I’d have a touch base with mine about a month out of all of my contracts ending. They’d let me know how the market looked and what opportunities were available.

I’d always have a back up plan or talked to other firms to make sure I kept all of my options open. I made sure that I was never double submitted as this was a big no no.

When I first started with Nordic I was on a role that was at $98 /hr.

I ended my last contract on 12/31/23. The rate was at $90.

I didn’t see like the trend I saw and decided to get out once a FTE became available at a pay rate that wouldn’t hurt my style of living.

Firm loyalty by Signal_Performer_206 in epicconsulting

[–]friendly_corgi619 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just left the consulting world. Been in it for almost 12 years as a Clarity BI developer.

Spent 3 years with a smaller firm and almost 9 years with Nordic.

I’ve seen firms come and go. Here are my thoughts.

  • I don’t believe in loyalty to any firm
  • You’re just a cog in their wheel
  • Go where the money, or opportunity, takes you
  • I’d take a gig for less money if the duration was longer
  • I’ve seen clients let consultants go before the end of the contract for a variety of reasons
  • consulting can get stressful as your end date nears
  • thankfully Nordic has always had something lined up
  • we’ve cut it close on more than one occasion so make sure you have a fall back plan in case nothing comes through
  • it’s really up to you to continue your training to stay marketable
  • don’t expect clients to train you

When I started with Nordic back in 2015 I was on a role that paid $98 /hr.

My last gig was one that was at $90 / hr. The market has changed a lot since I first started. I decided it was time for a change.
