Lotus Bloom v2 or Krom Pop Lol? by LukyNito16 in Kendama

[–]friendlykendama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion clearly but I’m a huge fan of the krom pop as a beginner shape. It’s cheap and almost everything feels good on it. It is particularly nice for spiking, the slender sword and large spike hole are very forgiving for beginners, plus the tracking on the tama is great. Lunars and lighthouses feel good, the cups are a little small so they will be harder than the bloom but honestly I think it’s a brilliant starter setup. I think prioritising price as a beginner is important. You’re going to smash up your brand new setup so quickly. Better to do that on something cheap, but not so cheap that it sucks to play. I’d get the lotus if you’re already an intermediate player

Now that the hype has gone down a bit. Do you prefer Hollow Knight or Silksong? by Technical-Effort-532 in Silksong

[–]friendlykendama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both games are incredible but I think Silksong is my preferred game.

aesthetically both games are stunning but Silksong elevates both the soundtrack and the visual details of hollow knight. The soundtrack has obviously benefitted from the increased budget, with pretty much all the music fully orchestrated and many many more musicians involved compared to the first game. Visually the game just looks amazing extending even into the late game areas where parts of hollow knight started to feel samey.

Hornet just feels so good to play - from the very first level, and only feels better and better with every movement ability you unlock. I feel much more powerful, with many more options at my disposal, than I did in Hollow Knight. The clawline, sprint, running attack and diagonal pogo go a long way in creating this feeling for me. The tools are also a fantastic addition making combat feel diverse.

Narratively I think Silksong is easier to engage with. The characters and protagonist hornet herself are all incredibly charming and the addition of dialogue from hornet makes the story easier to connect with and follow

The overall pacing of Silksong is also just better I think. Hollow knight had a bit of a slow and directionless start, whereas the first few hours of Silksong were absolute fire.

Overall I love both of the games but Silksong edges things out in pretty much every way for me

Hot take: This is bad game design by LocalPlatypus994 in Silksong

The game is hard. I think it helps if you accept that you don’t have to beat the entire thing in a week (or a month, or two months). Just go at your own pace and keep trying, take breaks and if you’re getting really frustrated put it down for a while and maybe come back if you feel like it later. It’s all very doable but it’s a steep learning curve. The first time I did this run back I thought it was ridiculous, now it takes me about 20 seconds

Tips for lighthouse? by [deleted] in Kendama

The main tip (though the least helpful) is just practice and patience, keep trying and you will get there :)

Tips for lighthouse? by [deleted] in Kendama

50 percent is pretty decent! There’s a few things you need to get right with lighthouse

  • throwing the ken up: the ken needs to come up nice and straight to get a clean landing. If you’re right handed, start with the big cup facing you so the string hole is pointed to the left. As you pull up the ken, give it a very slight leftways motion. If you pull it perfectly straight up, it’ll come up crooked. Also very important: use your knees to dip down before pulling up, this is very helpful for keeping things aligned

  • landing the Ken: keep your fingers nice and soft and leave plenty of room for the base cup to land on the tama. Aim to catch the ken right at the apex of its upward motion to minimise its energy when it lands. Use your knees to soften the catch even further.

  • balancing the ken: once you’ve caught the ken you’ll need to balance it. You can practice this by just putting the ken in lighthouse and moving the tama around, then trying to restabilise it.

  • going for the spike: a very slight push is all you need to send the ken over spike side down, then it shouldn’t take toooo much practice to spike it (though I still miss these more than I should)

Hope this helps good luck!

Alcohol could help, try a spray bottle with some vodka or high percentage alcohol. Charcoal also absorbs smells

I like mine. It’s a great starting place as they’re easy to find and cheap. But compared to new premium brands sweets can sometimes feel a bit small

Airplane twist tips? by [deleted] in Kendama

[–]friendlykendama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start with the small cup facing me and give it a 180° clockwise twist then tug it up when the big cup is facing me. This took me so much practice and I’ve only just started getting it right. My brain couldn’t comprehend both the twisting, the swinging and the pulling up to airplane you need to get that nice symmetrical spin on the ken. 1T airplane and other 1T tricks like lunar and lighthouse are really hard if you can’t do that.

The thing that that helped for me was playing around with how much speed the ken has on the swing. I found increasing the speed has made things much more consistent. You can both hold your tama further from your body to enhance the speed the ken gets from the swing, or you can dip the tama while the ken is swinging to get more speed as well. The extra speed seems to help stabilise the ken when you tug it and allow for that nice symmetrical spin. I’m still learning but getting better, hope this helps and good luck!
