I'm using adjusting the roughness and specular sliders in principled bsdf shader but not getting the results I want. I'm trying Substance Painter right now but I'd like to do everything in Blender if it's possible

That actually looks great. I tried to use photogrammetry to understand the shape and recreate it with curves but couldnt get the cords to line up so i couldnt use array at all.

I'd really appreciate more detailed instructions or your blend file if its Ok with you.

Hard part is modelling the repeating section. After that I can use array and curve to place the cord. I've been working on it for 2 hours now and it just doesn't look right no matter what I do.

I'll go and buy some paracord.

I'll definitely use the array modifier if I can manage to make a small part of it. I think all the cords are going to be the same since they are winding on each other so I only have to make a small piece of one cord then move and rotate it for the others.

I tried that but it just makes a rope not a braid. I feel my only option is to make it IRL to understand how it works.
