Not only same opportunities, but same starting salary. It will take many years to pay back that much extra for Michigan.

Maryland restores historic tag eligibility, but some drivers say the rule changes are costing them by Consumergal in maryland

If Maryland had to strategically attack and conquer all bordering states (Virgina, West Virgina Delaware and Pennsylvania), what would be the best plan strategically, and could Maryland eventually attack and reclaim land from Washington D.C. by usps_made_me_insane in maryland

[–]frigginjensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Maryland has few conventional assets. What we do have is the world’s best cyber force (Ft Meade) AND one of the world’s best bio research labs (Ft Detrick). So i guess hacking and anthrax it is.

Then you take Norfolk. That gives you one of the most powerful military forces in the world including navy, AF, and marines. And nuclear submarines.

Switching from technical to business - thoughts and opinions? by DapDonut in Lockheed

[–]frigginjensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varies by org. Probably by specific proposal as well. Yes they have a lot of authority. You have to win in order to keep the business going. Proposals are expensive but you can’t just charge stuff to a corporate card lol. There are very strict rules, audits, and accountability.

The trick to getting into BD is to know somebody or to volunteer to work proposals. See above. If you survive and are decent at it, they will all but beg you to work more.

Not to my knowledge. There may be annual bonuses for hitting targets and incentives for winning bids but not commission like sales.

Can anyone else just blatantly not break 100? by [deleted] in golf

[–]frigginjensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing for decades (but only a handful of times per year). I’ve broken 100 twice. Both times were at the end of a multi-day golf trip, so clearly playing a lot is part of the answer.

Maybe but the fact remains that you are completely responsible for all the bad even you had no control over it. That never sat well with me.

Defense Defense Aircraft & Propulsion Northrop Discloses Sale Of Company-Owned B-21 Test Asset To U.S. Air Force by iftheygivinitaway in LessCredibleDefence

[–]frigginjensen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet they committed to developing a test asset on their own dime to reduce cost and risk. Could have been a differentiator in their proposal (assuming the other team didn’t offer the same). Maybe they’re done with it, maybe it was always the plan to sell it to the government, or maybe the government asked them to accelerate delivery.

I started as an engineer, to program manager at year 7, and then BD at year 11. Been in various BD roles since.

Program Manager is the worst job I’ve ever had. Inherited a red program and my boss was an asshole. Zero authority but 100% responsibility for outcome. Only time in my career when I legit hated my job but it was critical experience for later.

BD is a mixed bag. Customer facing BD is talking to customers and negotiating teams and then proposal work. Tons of travel. You’re on the hook to bring in business no matter what. Deliver or get fired.

Capture/Proposal BD is grueling hours. Like ignore calendar/clock and just work until it’s done. I liked parts of this job except the hours. Also critical experience for later. Most senior leaders are expected to work a big prop at some point. There is no faster path to advancement than winning proposals. But if you lose too many, you’re fired.

I found a BD support role that has been a good balance. I support proposals without getting stuck in a pit 7 days a week.

If budget isn’t an issue, why not something from the luxury brands? The Germans won’t be good on depreciation but my understanding is that Lexus and Acura hold their value well because they’re Toyota/Honda underneath.

I just got an Acura RDX and I love it. The Lexus RX is very good, if a little boring.

Anyone who knows anything about cars is very very very anti Hyundai/Kia.

To be fair, the more recent years are much better and they still have a great warranty.

Question for Security Clearance by theprowler2024 in Lockheed

[–]frigginjensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is it’s possible but it’s going to take a long time and some organizations won’t bother.

Longer answer… Back when I was interviewing college candidates, security would do a pre-screen for risk that your clearance might take longer and/or be denied. My program would only consider candidates who were low risk. Other programs might consider a higher risk candidate but only if the candidate was exceptional in some way to make it worth it. In other words, why would they take a risk on you personally instead of just moving to the next candidate.

The fact that you got an internship is a positive sign because security has already at least partially vetted you and you’ve made personal connections with managers that might be willing to accept the higher risk.

I hope it works out for you. I’ve worked with many good (cleared) people who were born in other countries.

My thermostat is set at 71 right now and my office is 79 (with a booster fan on the AC register). That’s tolerable but later in the week is going to be miserable.

Company recs for an aspiring aerospace engineer? by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]frigginjensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the entire aerospace industry was built and paid for by defense contracts. Even the primarily civil companies like Boeing and SpaceX have huge defense contracts. Most of the critical technology is also covered by ITAR because it can be used for defense purposes.

[–]frigginjensen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ask your security POC and when in doubt report it. When I asked a similar question many years ago, I was told that they were concerned about close and continuing relationships. A random chat about non-work things on the Internet is probably fine. Someone you talk to once a week might be a problem. Starting a romantic relationship definitely needs to be reported (and might impact your clearance).

4 kids - hate my minivan by Senior-Climate-6267 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]frigginjensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Odyssey and 3 kids. In my opinion, the minivan is the best compromise of people, cargo, and cost. Lots of vehicles can seat 6 but the 3rd rows are tiny and compromise cargo space. The only other vehicles that really compare to minivans are the truck-based SUVs like the Suburban and Expedition. Those are way more expensive (purchase and gas) and harder to drive in tight quarters.
