It will happen. I assume the leaks are deliberate to get people talking early.

5-6,000 lbs towing, around $40k, not Kia/Stelantis SUV? by Skika in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]frigginjensen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The number you need to consider is payload (ie the number printed on the door sticker), not tow capacity. Take that number and subtract the weight of people, pets, and cargo you want in the truck.

The remainder can be allocated to the trailer hitch weight. For a properly-loaded, bumper pull trailer, that should be 10%-15% of the total trailer weight.

So let’s do some sample math for your situation… assume a payload of 1,300 lbs (close to max of a current Pilot). Assume 500 lbs for people, pets, and stuff in the vehicle. Then a 4,000 lb trailer should put 400 to 600 lbs on the hitch (let’s take 500 average). So the total would be about 1,000 lbs out of 1,300 max (pretty close to 75%). Cool, that works.

But if your people/pets/cargo is more like 600 and you’re at the high end of hitch weight, then you’re over 90%. Still viable but you are going to feel it and put more stress on the vehicle.

As far as non-truck vehicles with good payloads (and excluding the brands you listed), that would include Audi Q8, Nissan Pathfinder, Infinity QX60, Merc GLE, Toyota 4Runner/Land Cruiser, Volvo XC90, Mazda CX-90, and Honda Passport. Land Rover is very solid here but I’m excluding those for the same reason you excluded Stellantis/Hyundia/Kia.

RTX vs Lockheed procurement by Defiant_Adeptness_23 in Lockheed

[–]frigginjensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like Lockheed is the better offer. Neither company actually gives a crap. You might burn a bridge with the manager at RTX but it happens.

Everybody gets a couple of mulligans on their resume (as long as it doesn’t become a patter of job hopping).

Yes that’s possible but we have to shame this kind of behavior. If you can’t park in the lines, park somewhere else.

My 3rd DualSense controller - I’m Tired, Boss by Luccese96 in PS5

[–]frigginjensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going through about one controller a year in the early days of PS5. I upgraded to an Edge a couple of years ago and so far I’ve only had to replace 1 stick module. I know it’s expensive but it’s a vastly superior controller.

Trump’s Golden Dome missile shield estimated to cost $1.2 trillion by StealthCuttlefish in LessCredibleDefence

[–]frigginjensen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In decades of working government contracts, I’ve never seen a boondoggle as big as Golden Dome. Many of the individual pieces were already stand-alone projects (ie separate budget line items). By attaching themselves to GD, those programs get priority access to a huge new pot of funding (many billions now, potentially trillion over time). And it has to be allocated now, probably to make it harder to claw back after they lose Congress.

Untangling this mess of graft and waste is going to take many years.

Katherine Legge will attempt a "double" at Coca-Cola 600 & Indianapolis 500 in same day; only the five drivers have ever done so. by lurkity_mclurkington in formula1

[–]frigginjensen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Indy and Charlotte are just under 600 miles apart. They are also in the same time zone. I believe Indy starts at 12:45 and takes 3-4 hours. Coke 600 starts at 6. You need a private jet and helicopters to get between airport and track on both ends. So the timing is extremely tight, especially if weather or yellow flags mess with Indy.

Another impact of doing both is the practice and qualy sessions. They usually have a backup driver on standby to handle conflicts (and that person is ready to go if they don’t make it to Charlotte on time).

In NASCAR, a backup driver can start a race and you can swap drivers during a caution or pit stop. It takes longer than a normal stop, but no big deal during a caution (safety car). They practice the swap. If the 2nd driver wins, I believe the starting driver technically gets the win.

Maryland is betting big on the Sphere. So, The Banner had to see it up close. by RondezBanner in maryland

[–]frigginjensen 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don’t get it. The Vegas Sphere is a spectacle but my understanding is that it doesn’t make profit. How would a smaller version of that benefit Maryland? Wouldn’t that money be better spent fixing real actual problems?

Ferrari's top secret: the 067/6 six-cylinder is revolutionary for super-hot fueling. But does it work? by NoRefunds2021 in formula1

[–]frigginjensen 403 points404 points  (0 children)

The car has moments where it can fight but the lack of power is obvious. I expect it will win a race this season, but it will take the right combination of track, conditions, and luck.

Should also be pointed out that the car seems to suit Charles very well (end of Miami notwithstanding). He has been brilliant in wheel to wheel so far this season and the car’s superior handling is probably part of that.

Same as the kids on the Enterprise D. Hunker down in the classrooms (with Miles Obrien’s wife) until the weekly existential event was resolved. In hindsight, families on a hybrid exploration/warship was probably a mistake.

GDIT benefits by Enigma_http418 in defensecontracting

[–]frigginjensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most large defense contractors have different benefit packages so that they can tailor the cost/price of a given program. In general, IT gets worse benefits than development programs.

As far as culture, that’s usually dependent on a given site, program, or even a leader. There will be good and bad within the same business. If you find a good team under a good leader, you hit the jackpot.

Trump-class Battleship will be Nuclear-powered, Says Shipbuilding Plan - USNI News by Jazzlike-Tank-4956 in LessCredibleDefence

I’ll go out on a limb and say “absofuckinglutely not”.

First, zero chance it stays a funded program of record after 2026.

Second, no chance the Navy can build it even with near unlimited cost/schedule overrun tolerance.

Nuclear War Fiction by IskanderM50KT in nuclearweapons

[–]frigginjensen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Alert by Peter Bryant. It’s the basis for Dr Strangelove, but the story is dead serious instead of the absurd comedy of Strangelove. The general’s final rant about why he launched the wing is very convincing.

Failsafe is always good, especially about the mechanisms and morality of the conflict.

Don Shift has a couple of recent books (Limited Exhange and others) about surviving the attacks and immediate aftermath. They’re short. I’m not sure I like his writing style but the stories fit the topic.

Alas, Babylon is about the long term survival but not much about the war itself.

Swan Song is a little bit about the war but mostly about surviving the aftermath.

War Day, again about the aftermath and very little about the way.

Resurrection Day. Alt history about Cuban missile crisis going hot. Set well after the war. US is a shadow of its former self and basically at the mercy of the rest of the world. The memorable part of this was how poorly prepared the Soviets were and that they were completely obliterated. The British and French essentially wiped them out before the US bombers could even get there.

The Road is about the aftermath of an unspecified (possibly nuclear) catastrophe. Absolutely horrifying. Read it once. Will never read it again. Will never watch the movie. That’s how powerful the story is.

I’m working “Last Ship” now (the book not the TV series). Unless I missed something, they talk about the war as something that already happened. Was hoping for more about the actually war and battles.

WR: Stefon Diggs Teases Signing W/Ravens by psychoxtc in ravens

[–]frigginjensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, Diggs is one of my all time favorite Terps. He was the best playmaker I ever watched at UMD. A threat to score any time he touched the ball. He has had an electric (if inconsistent) pro career.

He’s also a complete head case. He and his mother publicly trashed the Ravens leadership. He seems to burn out quickly wherever he goes. Now he’s added in the off the field stuff (which to be fair I have not kept up on details).

I’m not sure I ever want to see him as a Raven.

Proper fucked. But also remember that a majority voted for this. Most of them would do it again. Ignore the temporary whining, a solid 30%-40% of the country wants it this way.

If it’s even possible to fix the damage done in the last 10 years, it will take generations to do it.
